Don't shade with black, dodge/burn or just a smaller value, change the hue a little, use a multiply layer, mess with opacity, use overlays, if you want a "soft" shaded look, learn how to blend or use masks to make a nicer looking fade than using a soft brush. Big confident strokes yadda yadda yadda.

a few other tips:
always make your background a neutral color to start off with (mid tone grays) and start off with a midtone for everything else (skin tone, make it darker and color in the highlights) it encourages you to create a deeper contrast which in turn emphasizes depth

anon who posted the first two stuff, Great job! The difference in colors shows a dramatic improvement. Good on you also for getting other lineart because it's easier on your brain to focus on studying on thing at a time.

What I would suggest trying to do next is taking some artwork you really like, and color drop the transitions from light to dark so you can see the variations in hues, saturation and value and thus see for yourself how to make coloring that looks appealing to you.

coloring is the easiest thing to do, but if you don't know how to draw you probably don't understand form and how it interacts with light, and even if you just hack around it and color drawings from other artists, your attempts will look like shit.
