Not bad. The right side is really confusing at the moment.

The left side needs some perspective fixes and better edgework.

The lighting can be clarified a bit more and made more consistent, and then some more of the light shown in the reflections.

The water looks like a cheap filter, I hope it is just there as a base to paint over.

Gradient Cell shading, basaically I select a region I would do a highlight or shade in with cell shading and do a gradient over it, like the attached image results. (I didn't draw the attached image, Its colors by an artist named K. Michael Russel on youtube that I like)

I think you need to work on a bit of color theory and balancing in this, while the colors are accurate, they're not interesting, its like the helmet is being lit with perfectly white light, - I'd also try working on a 45% Grey background to help you see how much contrast you need - its pretty flat overall. You're getting there though, don't give up! Look up some similar art online for lighting inspiration

Thanks chums! I think a major problem I had was I started this during the day and finished about half of it, then went to work and started again at night.
Problem was the lighting completely changed and I didn't really have a record of where the lights where when I started. Pretty noob mistake but I'm gonna buy a lamp so I can light stuff as I wish.

This is okay, I think you're trying too hard to make it look realistic, without going all the way with it. It looks like you have correct proportions, but the lack of Value and Light/Dark makes it flat and kinda boring. Its like an image in a coloring book. IMO, Finish it out.

I hate to say it, but its sort of a shitty grind until you get to a point where it just looks wrong. The biggest tip I got when practicing this is Don't be afraid to just erase a whole limb or head or torso or half the whole thing and re-draw it to get the proportions right. If it looks wrong, fix it. And you should be able to step back and see if it doesn't look like its supposed to.

Looks to me like you're trying to hard to outline the facial features, rather than using light and shadow to create the forms. I can tell you know what you're doing, just get out of the habit of outlining all the facial features, especially the nose. I doubt this guy actually has such a bulbous nose that is has a shadow behind the front bulb. Look into some facial anatomy too, understanding why there are certain shapes in certain places might help you some. Another tip to remember is that every crease on on the human body is the result of two masses bumping into eachother. Humans are Naturally concave in very few places.

1. Perspective. whenever you draw machinery, even if its round, you need perspective lines and a horizon. If you don't know what I'm talking about, watch this video:
2. Consistency - You have a lot of interesting shapes going on, but its different in every area, there is not one feature that is repeated in any other limb/part of the machine. Its got large round bolts on the front, but nowhere else. Gotta stay consistent.
3. Purpose - The BIGGEST crime in designing tech is adding random crap that serves no purpose. What do those big claw things coming out the top do? how do they work? what are those vents on the bottom for? the solution? REFERENCE. for every piece of tech you design, promise yourself to lookup 30 reference pictures of REAL machinery to take aspects of, and your work will imporove infinitely.
4. Clarity - once you have parts with specific functions, you need to make those functions very clear - what does this thing do? Tech is usually designed to do One thing Really really well, and that results in being able to tell what that device does relatively quickly. I can't tell what the purpose of your Robot is. I can't tell if its a submarine or a spaceship or an airship, is it piloted or autonomous? also, doodle a little person off to the side for scale - even if its just a stickman, its what you gotta do.

Whatever brush you use for hair makes it look as a low quality photo and the skintones all look like you picked them from the most red part of the skin.

I am all sincere when I say start with the basics. Shade a sphere. Your face doesn't have basic shapes, just darker brushstrokes where the shadows "might be".

Restating your lines a bunch of times is almost as bad as chicken scratching. The more thought you put behind each stroke the better you'll get gradually when quicksketching. As simply a value study, you're on the right track just push the values a little more and tone down that highlights because it's reading pretty flat, but as for the figures:
You're straightening things out.
You made the figure on the left's shoulder almost perfectly horizontal.
And the line going down her back almost completely vertical when it curves right.
Check the triangle formed by negative space on her arm too, it's too big.

Perspective is a bit wonky on the chick. According to her head and upper body, the horizon line is on her eyes. But that can't be true based on what you have in the background.

Also, I know the lightsource is supposed to be strong but I think some midtones on the creatures face will work wonders. Having it that bright makes it THE focal point and it's conflicting with the rest of the composition like the girl. I don't know which to look at.

Working on design

>> No.1757085

>>1756774
When the back and torso are bent like this keep in mind how this will impact the shoulderblades.. In a way they should be concave. That said, it is not realistic for the arm to be so taut. The arm and shoulder would be draped towards the front most likely. Sit down like this and observe how all your weight will be held on the heels/feet/balance. If you want the arm to be supporting her weight, the entire torso and shoulders will need to be modified to "lean back" further.

I would suggest at this point to find a reference. Fix the feet first and completely remove her arm. When you have established more gravity in the figure - then I would suggest adding the arm. Finally, keep perspective and general proportions in mind. As the arm will be draped and not laying directly Parallel to the torso, it may appear shorter. This same strain of thought explains why the girls feet and legs look awkward: the wrong angles are being used for each shape of the body. I hope this helps and good luck friend.

So I have this tablet and I've just gotten into using Photoshop at the start of the Summer. I sketched this up with the focus explicitly on trying to render *something*. I can see there's some fucked things on the fundamental level, and if you want to point it out that's cool, but I'm more curious about how the blending and refining(sort of) turned out. I used just a regular brush with a round tip to put down the color and used the mixer brush to actually...well, mix them.

So...is this the right thing? Is the mixer brush okay to use? Or is this the wrong direction?

So far I've just figured that "it's good here and there," the usual "if it works, go ahead." I'm just not certain about what all the tools are that I should be using to render, and more importantly to me, refine a piece. I'd hate to find out that what I'm doing is essentially no better than using the smudge or blur tool after doing it for far too long.

>TL;DR: The mixer brush feels like it's too easy
>to clean things up, is this the way it should
>be, or is there a wider variety of tools I should
>be using to smooth out my details?

Also, sorry if this isn't where I should be posting. I just figured I'd ask a question while I was posting this.

What my intent has been and currently remains is too explore what's in my toolkit using photoshop. I can wrap my head around rendering exclusively with brushes. What I'm wondering about is(and I should have worded this better; I apologize for that) whether or not the mixer brush, in that particular sketch, is being largely misused. Similar to the whole "using the blur tool to blend" issue, I'm curious about if the tool I'm using, and more importantly what I'm using it for, is misguided.

I like such trippiness. Maybe something under the boat, like a tentacle reaching by behind, so that it looks like a vicious entity in a dangerous universe, not just a weird ugly thing. Maybe it could be the tongue, a forked evil tongue, and with more stuff below to show the boat is actually on the saliva of the mouth, so the entity's face is complete, and the face is the landscape. It's nice concept.

>>1757405
She looks like my sister, that's funny. I think the neck should be more to the right, more in the direction of the chin, and the nose is too much like a big potatoe, it'd be pretty if it was a bit more pointy, but maybe it's intentional. Also the mouth is a bit too low, but maybe it's intentional too. Also maybe a very thin line of shading below the hair, especially the right side with the face highlight

When you're doing a life study, try squinting to find the major masses. Find the darkest and the lightest values, then compare the rest to them.

Also try and have a more accurate drawing. If you're just starting out, try something simple instead. Much easier to correct a drawing error then, than if you have a very complex shape.

Have you tried a different angle? Girl meets monster has been done a lot of times. Are they ecquals? The composition suggests so.

Maybe try a different angle, what would happen if we saw the girl from the back, giving a portrait feeling to the monster. What if that was reversed, only hinting at the lizard? Lots of exciting solutions to the story you're telling here.

Don't worry about the shirt. Don't worry about the hair. What you should worry about is that you're symbol drawing. Look at the abomination you made, and then look at the ref. Does her nose really look like that? No. Even the over rendered mouth, does it really look like that in the ref? No.

Learn to see angles and proportions before you get caught up in rendering. Just DRAW about a hundred portraits like this, using only line, not even worrying about value or hair texture or anything more advanced than just recreating what you see.

Also go through the Edwards book. It would probably help you.

She's covered up quite a bit so you're going to have to do it with smooth curves and feminine facial and body features. When you try and construct humans the way you are it can be very difficult to tell the difference between the two genders because generally the muscle and fat deposits are more telling than the underlying bone structure, particularly from the angle you have it at. Once you get your lines in and add feminine curvature to the body + female body language (pointed / scrunched toes on the left foot, gentle and relaxed body, hair, etc.) it'll all come together and be easier to tell what's going on.

>> No.1758383

The colours are quite off, but the rendering itself is decent. Watch out for the proportions by the way (the tip being the obvious error here)

How are you blending it? If you're using a mixer, smudge, etc; try to manually blend and render it until you've got that. Don't rely on tools until you know how to manually do it.

When blocking out the colours, use the broadest brush first. Your hues are fucked from the start when you began laying down the paint.

When painting more reflective or glossier objects, be careful about painting the highlights, because that can overall affect the form and material of the object.

And quit chickenscratching.

But yeah, overall it's decent. Practice more and be more diligent about respecting the reference material. Basically, practice your observational skills more.
