I've been continuing as normal for a few days, I've certainly got better with this particular thing but worry that there is some downside to it
I haven't found anyone else do this, everyone only draws the part of what they're seeing that's in focus rather than as much as possible. I've fit 3 walls, the ceiling and the floor in this drawing when the normal way to go about it would only fit maybe the 2 walls and the floor. Does anyone else find doing this fun and could educate me as to whether to continue doing this or to go and learn perspective?

Sorry for low-res image, my scanner exploded

Alright, do your worst
a little info, first:
It's a crappy sketch I made when I was bored, am working on writing and illustrating a book about aliens, this definitely isn't going to be in it (not alien enough, amongst things)
I was testing out a new note book (I am very finicky about my paper, this pad seems to indent too easily, so erased lines are still a little visible)
and lastly, I was attempting a different style of shading and erasing to add dimensions (not even close to realistic)
Tear me a new one, /ic/

You need to put your values down more carefully and evenly, you are creating a lot of variations that are throwing off the form. I've been drawing for a couple of months - mainly impulsive/without preparation or reference - and finding it difficult to find or maintain a concrete style (pic related). im aware this probably has to do with the method im using - "get a feel, try to put it down", but at the same time, every time i try to break it down, operationalise the process, all the joy i get from drawing drops off. does anyone else get this too? is there a way around it?

Looks like you slapped that shit down in 5 minutes or less.
You need to slow down first and foremost, try and "get things right". Sketchbook is sketchbook, but still - you need to work on your perspective and figures. Also, looks like you've got no idea where you are going with your figure at some places because you try to lay down the contour and then redo it over and over. That can be fixed one part with actually doing gestures more and other part with drawing practice with stuff like in Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching.

You've got a combination of your proportions being off and your values being off. You've also rounded out her curves when in fact they more detailed then just a roundish pear shape.

You can do it that way as long as you end up with two solid planes of value. It helps alot when establishing the rest of the values since, as a rule of thumb, the lightest area in the shadow plane will rarely be lighter than the darkest part of the shadow plane.

For instance on a value scale of 1-10 (1 being white 10 being black), the lightest shadow will be a 5, and the dimmest lighting can be a 4.

That pic isn't a good example of shading, I think pic related is probably more what you're thinking of. I used to draw glass objects a lot to practice rendering. It forces you to recognize the reflections as shapes and value. Don't worry about shading until you can draw things in perspective though; that's a mistake I made a while ago and am slowly fixing.

So I started reading Loomis' "Fun with a Pencil" and doing the excersise about drawing a circle, then the nose, then the lines, then the shapes, etc. The upper left one was an attempt to directly copy one from the book, with the upper middle one I followed directly one of the examples but trying to do a different head, the other four I did myself.
It's fun, but I wonder how long should I do this excersise before getting to the more technical stuff that follows.
I'm also getting used to drawing in a tablet.

I can really appreciate the pencil work on all of these, I like most the guy with a hat. Did you use only one pencil, or did you have softer one for the darkest parts?

Dunno about giving much critique, they're solid. Maybe would have left top of the right girls head off. Transition with the guy is not so good.

Working on expressions for this character, studying some cartoon expressions along with IRL cat faces, the Optimistic and Tired faces both coming from feline reaction images.

Thoughts? Also, The first time I tried a walking pose and perspective with a figure, I'd like some critique on that as well.

never seen your work before so here's my honest opinion. You seem to know what muscles that the male form usually has and you can individually tell which muscle goes where but I think you have a problem of combining them together into one realistic mass. I would persoannly ignore all the other chara teristics like a dog head or anything, just do a lot more life drawing and foccus in getting the whole body down and working together as a coherent mass.

I forgot to mention that this is the first time I tried doing a pose like this. I used a reference for the anatomy (specifically the statue of Theseus fighting the Minotaur), and I used some imagination for the walking pose and perspective. More practice never hurt anyone, so I'll just work harder until then. Have a nice one, friend.

Treat the whole head as a whole, don't separate each part of the head in your mind. Pay close attention to the top of the head - beginners tend to not pay attention to what they can't perceive to be there, even if it's there, under all that hair.

Your linework's ok, it's just the understanding of the structure that needs some practice.
