Am I the only one here who gets tired of a painting after spending 5 hours on it?

I feel like I want to start a new one and finish asap, and it often looks rushed. The few times I've forced myself to go very slowly and with caution I've surprised myself and my colleagues.

How do you train your patience? How can you not get bored after a few hours?

That depends on what is stopping you.

Maybe you just lack music, movies. Rendering becomes really boring and many can't do it without music.

Now, in art class my teacher used to grab a brush with white paint and do strokes over the very refined paintings of the students.
At first they went really mad but then they took the opportunity to improve what was down bellow. So they don't feel oppressed by the initial design and keep inventing things.

I think that many artists want to keep on designing instead of just making a thumbnail in 3 minutes and then spend 10 hours refining.

Pic related, taking more design decisions despite having spent hours rendering something.

Also, many artists work on 2 different paintings at the same time to keep their interest.

Why not just keep all your unfinished work aside and finish it later? Is this a bad habit? I mean if you are working on something for a client I understand rushing but not the tedium. Letting your work agitate you seems to me like it's not worth it.

I see what you mean but I prefer the second version. In the first the bottom third of the canvas is fairly plain while everything else is busy. In the second, now both the top third and bottom third are plain, making it feel a lot more balanced.

True, and I really don't like anything about the first one other than the sky. Particularly the first one's trees, bleh.
It still bums me out about the sky, though; I think a better choice would've been to change the composition to get rid of the boring lower third than to work on the (admittedly realistic and better looking) reflection, keeping the focus on the sun and clouds.

I think my point more might be something along the lines of don't put realism above having an engrossing image. The first one's problem is that the lower half is boring, not that it's unrealistic, and having a ref isn't really the main solution to "fixing" it.

They're two different kinds of paintings. The bottom one looks like a sterile, unfinished concept art scribble. Sure, it's more naturalistic, but it's bland.
The top picture is more of an abstraction, and while not naturalistic, the weird clouds add to something to the whole.
The funny thing is that the idiot uses ref that doesn't show the same thing as the original picture, given that there aren't any clouds in the reference photo.

Maybe you should try your try your hand at abstract art rather than learning how to draw. That way you can do whatever you want and if you get bored you can start on a new one and no one can tell that you have this issue.

Pretty sure that paintover was just trying to show how quickly and easily you can create a vastly superior sense of color and believability by simply using a reference instead of trying to guess how something should look without actually knowing how it looks.

If you really believe the first painting having a somewhat more interesting cloud pattern makes the lesson that paintover is trying to teach redundant, then you are the idiot here.

am i the only one here that likes the bottom one immensely better? The clouds in the top one loook bad and it is generally distracting. i looks like something i would paint, and my painting is god awful. Sometimes things get boring. I have patience in spades, my problem is that rendering things out doesn't make things any better. I've spent a couple of days working on a painting and then just deleted those layers because the messy but confident lay in still looks better. So I need to work on getting things down very well at the start.

That's pretty nice anon, wish you'd put something in the background though. Next time have a stronger, darker piece of cloth in the background to make things more interesting, set it up like you would a model at life drawing.

I get what you mean on the perspective, it's obviously from a different angle, don't worry about explaining that.

My advice for you drifting off too much while painting would be to do some shorter still lifes. Maybe do a bunch of smaller, faster studies, and it'd give you the chance to try interesting lighting set ups too.

Thanks anon, I'll definitely try the darker fabric next time, and hopefully do more quick things.
I'm not sure whether still life paintings should go in the daily drawing thread or the sketchbook thread, though.

I really like the strong colours you've used, as well as the general atmosphere. It's pretty epic.
Is there a way you can avoid the gradient tool without losing your strong blocks of colour? I'm just curious how that would change the picture.
