i am such a fucking retard for drawing flat shit my whole life. it was a waste of time.
now that i checked out hampton i realized that drawing 3 dimensionally isn't all that hard. it basically just comes down to simplifying everything into basic shapes and working with those basic shapes and fleshing them out to make natural looking drawings is easier than i expected.

Hate it. It doesn't describe any forms, it's inefficient, it's too uniform, doesn't guide the eye, etc.

Add diversity, simplify your shapes, and guide the eye where you want it to go.

>> No.1744572

Well for starters you want to introduce some variance to your edges. Incorporate the full spectrum from hard, firm, soft and lost edges. Learn where you should use what type of edge and why. Zero edge diversity is bad.

>does it get easier to get some when you reach a certain level?

I wouldn't say it gets easier. Ideally your standards will always be way above your skills and when that's the case you'll always feel like your work is subpar. Obviously some aspects you practice a lot will come easier to you at some point but at the same time any door you'll close will open up two more, if that makes sense. It's like Einstein said "The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.” It's a never ending ride

Dude, come on. You're picture is like a 12 year old making some fanfic about how more powerful their guy is than everyone else. Just to many things in the picture for anyone to take seriously. And his hair is too high, like his hair raises 6 inches into the air.

Create a focal point and limit limit the amount of those floating heads on the canvas. If you can't, then make them next to invisible. Darken them, hide them, but make the focal point those three people, becuase as you have it now, it's just distracting and unnecessary.

Also, movement makes alot of influence. See your heads going AWAY from the picture, than TO or AROUND them. Remember, everything in the pic is that guy's bitch, so they should complement him at all times. So make that no matter what happens, the viewer's eye is moving from one point to the next due to the direction everything is going, so that the viewer themselves, are his bitch. That way, this one picture tells whoever your trying to prove that you can draw that you know like 5 techniques they could never master and you glorified that guy's personality

>Can someone explain to me colors in shadows?
Colors in shadow are determined by the local color of the object, the colors of ambient light sources, and a few other situation specific lighting effects. Remember that if you can see something, and it isn't pitch black, then it is an ambient light source, and as such affects the colors of nearby objects.

A good 'rule' that often works is that the shadows will have the opposite color temperature of the primary light source (warm lights cool shadows, cool lights warm shadows), but this is often an oversimplification as eluded to earlier.

I'd read Gurney's Color and Light. Check out his blog too, as a lot of the information in his book is scattered throughout the blog.

I'd also check out these two:

I wouldn't know how to incorporate it without seeing the still life myself. Guessing what colors to mix is fine so long as you understand color theory, but if you're really concerned (and since you're working with such a small palette), you can just make a test. If you're using a warm and cool version of a color (cadmium yellow and lemon yellow for instance), you should be aware of how each shade will mix with other colors in your palette.

Colors don't work in absolutes, perception of color is affected by surrounding colors and will look different under different contexts. For example if you used a grey in a painting that has a lot of reds/oranges/yellows that grey will look cool by comparison but given a cool atmosphere that same grey value will appear warm by comparison even though its exactly the same. There's hardly anything to say that isn't obvious.
It's very stylized so it's quite hard to give decent critique other than "it looks like a titan from SNK".

Proportions are very off (could be intentional, partly is, but there's glaring errors), most obvious being too wide mouth, cheekbones not going round the face and low eyes.
I see you wanted to make brow low and depressed expression, but you just lifted eyes too high to get the effect. That's why nose looks so long, and ears looks to be too low. And cranium looks like helmet due it being too wide and those cheekbones not going around the face. Also those eyes are too close to each others.

Lightining is inconsistent, actually there's no shadows at all, everything is just there to indicate form. This makes it flat.

And lastly, the head is quite wonky. There's no construction, so the jaw is uneven (and can't really tell where it starts, looks like there are two jaws inside each others). Cheek bones and nose are also uneven.

I could go on, more about anatomy, or composition, or hatching, but you get the point. You seemed to have fun with it, but it seems very limited. It's like you draw only what you can.

So I think you should pick Loomis fun with pencil, and start those head constructions (they're fun!). After that, see where you want to move with your learning about fundamentals (sticky), but learn that construction first.

TLDR; Read the sticky

Your problem is that you're trying to figure out how light, form and materials work from a painter, who already had such an understanding of these things at the time this painting was made, that he began to warp and bend them for effect.
First learn how light works physically by reading about it and by doing tons life studies and then learn how masters controlled and bended those aspects of light.

figure drawing yeah, work on your color choices as well and try to think about the type of mood you want to set with this piece. I assume you're trying to get some sort of sexual and alluring mood, so I would suggest more emphasis on the red. Cut out some of the background as well, crop it so she's more of the focal point, or at least try and find a way to put more attention on her by maybe tweaking with the colors and values around her.
try and mess with contrast as well, use harsher lighting and darker shadows. mess with it

Try not to study and draw such front-on poses anon, to draw people you need to start thinking in 3d (if that makes sense), and its hard to see the depth in a pose like that.

Also don't use an unnecessary amount of lines, keep it clean.

I'm also noticing you hide hands in both your posts. Stop that, its painfully obvious to everyone else and no matter what you do there'll come a time where you'll have to draw a hand, so you better get started now.

I'd recommend you read Hampton's Figure Drawing- Design and Invention. Goodluck m8
