Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

In order to do something right you must first do it wrong.

Previous Thread: >>1730702

A general message to aspiring artists: Fear is the mind killer. Do not be afraid to make mistakes as no one is perfect, you will make mistakes. Learn from those mistakes, break from your comfort zones and explore new horizons.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

That "flipping-my-hair-with-my-hand-while-adjusting-my-belt-with-my-other-hand" pose doesn't hide the fact that you are deathly afraid of drawing hands, which is limiting you to only draw stiff, unnatural, and convoluted poses.

left is showing two hands middle is showing two hands right originally had both hand sin front but tucked in to sleeves. Second pose I tried hand behind back. ( was attempting something a 'shy' pose) I feel the proportions are awkward. I'm trying to draw them youngish looking. I think I may change pose on the right so feet are together and both hands are in front and down clasped together sort of on his way towards a bow. I feel that left's legs may look wrong. What dose /ic / think?

animators are influenced by animators is the easiest way to put it. Basically, if, as a creator, you see something you like, regardless of whether or not you're aware of it, you will carry that with you and it will influence your work from that point on. since they're professional animators, there is without a doubt some form of Japanese animation they've seen, enjoyed, an in turn have taken influence from, just like many professional Japanese animators have seen their works an enjoyed an yaddayaddayadda

long answer short: yes. to both.

Dont skip out on proper construction bro, it fixes most problems.

The shape of the tits is wrong. You need that gap over the tits connecting to the arm, see bottom left of infograph.

The traps and shoulders aren't convincingly symmetrical.

Either the shoulders should be wider or the head/neck thinner.

With the mouth open you should draw in a tongue.

I get paid adequately. I could charge more than I do, but the quality of my sketches can be inconsistent, so I don't charge as much as I should not to disappoint clients. If I were more consistent in quality, then I could charge 2-3x. I've never really gotten any complaints, but I've put some dogs out there.

As for the pic, you're going with a more naturalistic style, so I'd keep it in that direction. If you're having trouble with the face, figure out what expression or emotion you want her to convey and look up reference for it if you're having trouble. If you can't find the face you want her to make, or are having trouble with the muscles of the face making the expression, look in the mirror and make the face. See what happens to the jaw, the chin, cheeks, eyes, etc.

One problem I'm seeing with the eyes is that they're kinda goofy, not shaped the same. One looks kind of Asian and the other White. Change one to the other and see how it works out.

It's not that I don't listen, it's that there is literally nothing that can be changed to the piece since it's no longer in my possession. And most of the time the drawings are done, I'm not going to go back and retread over old territory. All I can do is carry whatever criticisms or concerns into the next sketch.

I have gotten criticisms about my women's hips being too narrow, I try to keep it in mind now, but I'm not going to go wild like Kyle with the big butts. I don't like big butts, I cannot lie. ;)

Sorry, missed the post first time around. Contact me if you wish, warning though, my time is limited and I'm not exactly punctual on responses, or my deadlines. :D

If this is the Barbarian and Queen person, I don't know what more I can tell you that I haven't already: work on your environments, look at different styles of architecture, castles, gothic churches, Greek and Roman ruins.

Learn how to firmly establish your characters in that space, either by learning enough perspective, or through enough observation that you can pull off a reasonable facsimile.

Yeah, the proportions are quite skewed to the cartoony side. I only played the beta one day and quit when they had me picking up wood for an NPC. Isn't this supposed to be a Sci-Fi MMO?

I do really like Artemis Zin's outfit though, and the emote that has a little bounce in it.

I need to get a portfolio ready for some possible work at cartoon network and I dont know what to put in there at all
Should it be mostly cartoon drawings or should I be showing of my actual skill level as far as painting and life drawings?
Is fanart something you can even put into a portfolio or is it a really bad idea? Ive got some really nice pieces but im not sure if it should be only original characters.

You've got to be kidding me, right? Firstly, WoW was the first legit MMORPG, and it was unique as fuck at that time, before everyone started copying it. Secondly "le unique races le half-furries so unique so not boring human", come on, guys. And besides the ones >>1734862 mentioned, there's also Tera (their races and armor are fantastic) and you do know that the new WoW release WoD has updated models right? First time posting on /ic/.

I've been drawing for about 4 years, huge gaps here and there. I used to have a 'style' when I was a shitty starter, but now I'm kind of wandering between many styles. I'd see a style I like and I'll go 'Hey I want to try that', and then it kinda sticks with me.

Well, there's some bad intro, and here's one of the most recent sketch I drew. I haven't drawn a full drawing for such a long time.

> It was one of the first successful MMORPGs
WoW, at its release, was more of a next-gen mmorpg than anything else.

The first successful mmorpgs were Meridian 59 and Ultima Online in 95 and 97. And then there was Everquest in 98, which for the first time in mmorpg history had millions of subscribers. Lineage (98) was also very successful as was Asheron's Call (99).
Blizzard then came along and took the best aspects of these mmorpgs and merged them to create WoW. If you should ever play Everquest you'll notice how similar the gameplay is.

So my goal is to draw mango but I am well aware that one has to go the classic way of learning real human anatomy and etc. and I am willing to do that. But I am also still impatient and would like to be able to contribute at least something.

So my question is: is it possible to learn to draw cute animu girls from memory in a short time like a month? Nothing complicated, static poses like standing straight, no or very simple shading and no color. And how would I go about learning that? Get one of those "how to draw manga" books?

>> No.1735342

Not in a month, no

But I guess the faster you develop an intuitive understanding of linear perspective, space, volume and form the sooner you can move on to figure drawing

You can't cook up nuance and taste in a month either.

>>1734911

Welcome,

I like the rougness in your piece and the face has a nice depth.

But I do think the head is too big for such a small body.

Your line work also seems to have a nice weight but it works beter in some places than others.(for example it's nice on the face and hair but seems different/off on the body and wings)

my 2 cents.

On a side note, is there supposed to be a part of a ear viable at the beginning of the horn or is it part of the horn?

I did a little bit of a paintover. Your lines are way too thick. Use a smaller brush first, try learning about line weight and try some variation in the thickness where for example the light is hitting versus where it is not. The uniform thickness in your lines also makes your image look flat, even with rendering.

The other issue is the neck down. The neck is too long and the slouch of the shoulders is too steep. The collar bones are also inverse to the way you drew them here and furthermore wouldn't be visible to begin with.

it's not a bad drawing overall, I think the face is appealing, and the rendering is on the right track. Anyway I hope that is enough to think about for now, good luck!

because you looked at it too much to see little problems you wouldn't notice otherwise. basically, you pass from the state of drawing to spectating if I may say it like that, it's a fresh view on it. that's why you should flip the canvas horizontally sometimes, you will see your mistakes immediatly. press H in sai if you're working on it.

it'll take time.
you also need to actually apply the stuff you learn. this is where stylelization comses into play. you don't need to draw every realistic feature of the face you just need to know them better. your knowledge will usually shine through.

just look at >>1737794 and compare your faces with that or any other artist. yours looks like a mask while better artists make faces where you can imagine it moving.

here's what you can try: draw a face that expresses itself. draw a face that moves. if you need to, look at other artists for pointers.

the first vertical lines go to the horizon vanishing point. Simple stuff. When you do horizontal on the ground you do it to work out scale within perspective. But does it have to be against the ground? No. The horizontal lines here are on a projected plane to show the scale of the picture. If you had a man on the ground, how the man would scale when you move him on the plane, that's the point of the plane. The second vertical lines that do not go towards to horizon vanishing point belong to the projected plane. They have their own vanishing point just like two-point perspective. The point is roughly located on the center line of the plane that originates at some point between you and the horizontal vanishing point, where if you move sideways you will get perspective distortion on the cubes. I don't think there's any guidelines for figuring out exactly where the vertical vanishing point would be, you just have to feel it out, while keeping in mind that the lines will curve differently with different lenses. Curving them slightly in like the pic or even more will push the effect of being tiny among big things effectively.

I would say 3000x3000 or is a good res to work at, i used to use around that res for a long time. Now though with a ridiculous pc i work in 9600x5400 which is five times 1920x1080. On the other hand the file size difference is something like x20. working sub 1k is also good when sketching and roughing out work, lower file size and more uniform lines help. Man I've been away for a while but it seems like even though you've improved you're still tacking on loli faces to your toned bods. Like, is this your thing or are you legitimately having trouble with a more adult face? You need to make the head overall more narrow, with a buff body like that make sure the chin is a bit more angular/pronounced but not too much or it'll start to look like a guy. Also those eyes need to be smaller, overall you want the face to learn less towards cute and more towards sexy. Look up mango characters with similar proportions to what you're after and use them as referece. Perhaps something like Motoko from GITS.

1. Find a nearby convention (to your style; if you draw animoots, go to an anime con. If you draw western stuff, go to a comic con. Use common sense.)
The higher ratio of attendees to vendors the better. You want to avoid the hugest conventions if you're just starting out due to the large amounts of competition. If you go to a small con, it's much easier to stand out as the best.
2. Have massive amounts of shat out fanart, and you can include some well drawn original stuff as well. There's an audience for both. (There might be restrictions, depending on where you live. A convention with fanart restrictions is more likely to value original works, while one without it's really hard to survive without fanart).
3. Be cute/attractive and or approachable.
4. Show up, set up an obnoxiously large display to drown out people beside you.
5. Sit there for hours while people hand you money for prints you printed out for 50c a piece.

Yeah, you can have up to two helpers. You don't even have to pay them most of the time if they're interested in the convention subject, because it's basically giving them a free pass to the con, and they can rotate shifts.

Shave, shower, haircut, new clothes. This will make anyone approachable.

If you don't live near a con like 95% of people in the world just go do porn

I post in here a lot, but with huge time gaps in between, so you've probably seen some of my stuff if you've stuck around.
I'm working on the Mako above, obviously. I did the painterly-Asuka style a while back with a thousand layers. I drew the Ahri with her hands in a heart shape, and Shimakaze in a life buoy.
I sell 18x24" prints for $25 (cost me $2 each to print), 11x17" prints for $13 (cost me 75c to print), and 8.5x11" prints for $8 (cost me 40c to print). I also sell iPhone cases for $15 (I get them made in China a buck a pop.)

I'm trying to learn what values technically are atm and how to set a mood with tones and colors. I'm not very good at shading but I'm trying to learn to render.

I'm not sure if I'm making progress yet

Is there any other programs that are fun to mess around with?

I oftentimes wonder if you're just some elaborate troll because you keep drawing crap and don't take any of the advice given to you.
