Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

In order to do something right you must first do it wrong.

Previous Thread: >>1716566

A general message to aspiring artists: Fear is the mind killer. Do not be afraid to make mistakes as no one is perfect, you will make mistakes. Learn from those mistakes, break from your comfort zones and explore new horizons.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

So should I do studies of every part of the body till I know it inside and out then move on to live drawing or do some of both or move to live drawing and then concentrate on my weakness with studies?

Sorry for how long winded that was.

>> No.1719812

>>1719771

I have absolutely no idea why people are having such a hard time "feeling things".

Perhaps the hardest thing that I had a problem when I was starting out fresh and diving head first into serious art study was "feeling out" gestures and poses. However, I soon realized that I was never taking my time in doing any of my drawings and I would always attempt to speed through my work.

After finally going through an old folder of mind, I came to realize that I when I had first started out, I was terrible at the work I did, but I remembered something: the first drawing in nearly 7 years that I had done (a cartoon girl with no shins and no hands) was something I spent over 14 hours on. I was proud of it at the time, but I could see all of my errors now.

If you take the necessary time to actually be passionate about your work, you'll feel the forms and gesture, especially if you have some background in anatomy study, as this will give you the confidence to place those forms and "feel it".

Stop trying to draw something in 20 minutes. Spend a lot of time on something. If you see something isn't right, get some reference, whether from life or from another artist, and draw until it looks correct. Come back to it the next day. Speed and the ability to feel quickly comes with practice. "Make it right, then make it faster."

I approve of pirate girls, but why is she posed like that, as if she just defeated and lit the ship on fire with her swords? Is she a survivor? Did she just get marooned?

If you want her victorious, she could be achieving piratey things: finding treasure, raising a mug of rum in a bar, standing over a defeated foe. You could have her at the wheel on board the fire ship in an act of defiance. Probably want to work on an idea and then make the composition to fit that.

As it is right now she looks like she's either shitting a banana o something, or her legs are like that because she's trying to avoid having a protruding rock shoved somewhere.

For the purposes of the story, the idea behind the picture, her pose and accessories do nothing to serve it. The swords are pointless. Why is she standing like this, her swords so confidently and arrogantly held? Was that her ship that is on fire? If so, why isn't she showing some form of regret? Did she sink it? Is she going to attack the viewer?

camposition/perspective/gesture/construction.
Think in a single action line to decribe the direction and flow of the pose, then think on the angle of vision you want to portray, then develop the gesture of the pose, then fill in the construction masses and refine with detail until you like.
You will never find reference of anime-esque lively and dynamic poses to practice your gesture, what you can do is take what you already now and turn it inside your head, basically, think in 3D and draw foreshortened stuff.

One critique: aside from Steven, all of the Gems seem to have the same head position, giving an impression that your playing it safe with head positioning. Consider body part placement in your compositions, both per-panel and global. Don't be afraid to show the bottom of a chin. (Ha)

Otherwise, it looks very good. Readable forms and recognizable characters throughout. I think you might enjoy screen tones more if you actually make them larger and make the patterns more obvious. I do this a lot. Adds so much character to my values. I love it. However, everyone has different tastes.

I don't care enough to redo the whole thing so I might just scrap it.
For Fran I did look at archers, I used a reference for her. Archers stand pretty still when aiming. For Balthier I admit I didn't use a ref, that's why it's so bad I suppose. In game though, both characters strafe/walk around with their weapons held down, but stand still while aiming and shooting. And I think (unless I remember wrong) Balthier uses all guns with one hand.
Mind you I'm not saying that my drawing isn't rigid and stiff, because it totally is. I'm just not sure how to make it more dynamic.

its an improvment form last ones. Why dont make them do something ? just standing frogs are boring. Theres no purpose of his arms I mean what is he doing ? why smiling ? you could just make him lay one arm on hips and other one in rest. If you want standing position make him less stiff. Just look how lifemodels pose when they stand its never just stiff pose.

Do you not see the same pattern from the bitter Anon when Teal was giving critiques and redlining drawings? There was no problem at first but then with the creation of the Anime threads it acted as a Catalyst for Teal to offer more help in his expertise on stylization however there was always that one Anon that felt as if Teal was doing it for attention when in reality Teal was just fulfilling what /ic/ is supposed to be that is offering advice and critique.

I honestly believe some may have even felt threatened to see a draftsman of his caliber perhaps they had their egos penetrated hence the disruption and shitstorms caused by those who did not like his way of giving assistance.

It could of been easily avoided by simply hiding the thread or the act of ignoring him but no they had to pull a "My way or the highway" stunt that effectively derailed the thread.

TL;DR - Stop liking what I don't like.

I'll be frank. The eyes, and shape of the head is that of an Alien Grey. I think the problem lies with how realistic you do the lips and the nose and well everything else but it doesn't plug in well with the eyes resulting in an unpleasant look.

Directions of the eyes are an easy fix, cut/paste/touch up. I kinda like the face in the first one better, it's more fuller, normal looking, whereas the latter's shading make her look more gaunt.

You also have a fuzzy texture to the scarf in the first that isn't in the 2nd. I'd add that back, the scarf is painted the same as the clothes, give us different things to look at.

I narrowed her face because her cheeks seemed swollen and to make her more feminine. I had a more defined jaw just before posting the last revision but I was afraid that it looked like a "man-jaw".

Try redrawing the ribcage without the boobs and you may get a better idea. it looks a little like a tube of flesh. You may or may not have to exaggerate some curves and/or overlap some parts of it due to the angle. (I may be talking shit for this last one; I'm not too sure myself)

Can't believe people still bullshit you with textures and what not.
Fix the eyes and it's finished, man.
You don't have to listen to absolutely everything people here tell you. My advice to you is when drawing a portrait just focus on the expression more. You can make photorealistic hair and clothes but those eyes will still stick out like a sore thumb.
It's a portrait and it should depict a person's face and expression, not telling you to neglect the rest but know your priorities.

>>1721502
This guy is right. The position of the irises and pupils should be more centered. Also, I don't know how no one noticed the position of those highlights. Color wise, if you wanna make her look more focused darken the pupils, if you wanna make her spacing out or something you can make them lighter.

Make the Surprised! face in the mirror and emulate that. Also, many different surprised moods, happy surprised, horror surprised, shocked surprised, etc. Pick one and see what other features and body gestures are there.

Okay guys, I've been a lurker for a very long time but I've never posted my work. I've been stuck in a kind of depression for a few months, haven't improved at all, so I figured I should stop being a coward and ask you guys for some help.
Could you tell me what the major issues with my anatomy are ? I feel like the limbs are too long, but I'd appreciate it if someone with a better trained eye could tell me what they think. I also know my poses are way too stiff, but I don't know how to fix that.
Disregard the kind of beast and ghosts, I don't know what's going on there.
One last thing, is this level any decent for a 18 year old ? I'm so scared of being behind the expectations for my age.

The problem of the animu threads is that they're almost not anonymous anymore.
Everyone either uses a trip or his drawings are recognisable. Blogs are posted left and right.
I guess that's somewhat unavoidable, but everything is getting TOO personal here.

Don't scare Kyle off this board just because you don't like him as a person. You need technically skilled artists to help you AND the others.
And Kyle, if you see this, contribute to the board with more feedback on other people's drawings.
You don't seem like such a bad guy but understand that always posting drawings that don't really need critique is only separating the people here to 'Kyle worshipers' and people who get annoyed at them.

I'm sorry I brought this topic up again.
I really hope that everyone who will read this will understand that I don't want to argue and am writing this only as an attempt to keep the community together and prevent the 'derailing' of the animu threads which is happening to almost every thread in months.

I think people are pointing out the chest because right now you have the breasts drawn like they are being viewed face on when you drew the back arched and being looked at from below. The left arm is up so that breast should go up a bit with it. When viewed low enough, you can also seen the bottom contour of the breast wrapping around the rip cage. Also the cross contour could be rounder on the pants to sell the low angle shot more.

I'm afraid I can't say more other than 'it's bad'. You seem to have misplaced the collarbone, made the thighs the same width as the calves, and the legs are also a tad longer than they should be. Limbs also look a bit like balloons, so you obviously don't quite know how they look like.

Search up pixelovely for nude figures and start gesture drawing and get to practicing how the human body looks like. If you want to get technical, Loomis books are out there for your perusal.

With regards to stiff posing, you can try a 'line of action' which is a line or curve which indicates the general 'trend' of the pose. Google images will explain it better.

Also, age doesn't matter and it shouldn't concern you. You may be more worried about HOW much you've improved, but even so just ignore the thought and get drawing. It'll be far more productive than moping.

I'm thinking of farming out the coloring to someone else in the industry, doing some painterly stuff in the background, and make it a print for cons.

Might have to make a Nudist Beach "I Want You" poster, along with a Tron Uprising print, 2nd Dirty Pair doujinshi, etc. Too many ideas, not enough energy. ;_;

Great, all I need, more competition. :P

One-offs as in a story/joke/scene in a page? Wouldn't be bad.

Good exercises for comics? I think everything people have been trying to pound down as the "fundamentals" or basics: anatomy, environments, perspectives, the ability to place your characters and other objects into a space convincingly (or passable enough that people don't care).

For comics, storytelling could be considered more important than illustrative prowess though. Making dynamic and interesting pages when it's full of talking heads can be as much of a challenge as an action scene.

I've always had an interest in comics, which lead to going to school for illustration and then onto the comic industry.

Setting up panels is like being the director for a tv or movie. Keep in mind where characters are in the scene, establish the scene's layout somewhere on the page (doesn't necessarily have to be the first panel, generally it is if a new scene). You don't have to show background in every panel, especially if there's a lot of dialogue. Mike Mignola, Keith Giffen are excellent at simple, but effective storytelling.

And it differs from culture to culture. The way storytelling in manga is vastly different than what is done in the US, compared to what is done in Europe. To me, manga storytelling concentrates more on "moods," hence lots of pages with empty spaces, single characters feeling stuff. While American comics want to relay a lot of information in a single page and move the story along.

The gesture is a little odd to me, especially the placement of the feet. Is the offering up the sword in defeat, tribute, reverence? That gesture can convey a lot to the reader without words.

Either way, I'm not sure giving a sword with your hand enclose all around the blade is a good thing. Mighty slicey.

Also good to keep in mind is keeping enough space for the dialogue. I see that you are thinking about it, but you do have what looks like a balloon going right over the hilt of the sword. Yeah, it can make some panels look empty, but dems the breaks. Generally, I try to put the balloons at the top (although looking at the page I'm working on now, I'm breaking my own rules--they're more like guidelines anyhoo. ;P)
