I'm just learning how to work with a tablet, so this was just a test. I rarely have the focus to finish painting my work as I've spent most of my life on drawings/watercolor instead. And typically jump to one new project to another leaving a lot unfinished. Was it normal for you to only use one brush when you guys started out too? I just can't seem to be able to work well with any of my brushes. Or is that something practice will smooth out as I go?

Your technical skill is almost professional, but the painting lacks a story. We have someone walking, you cann guess his emotions, but where is he heading? Or is he walking away from something? I can't find a clue. Te shape designs provokes fear, maybe a metaphorical shadow of his fears on the wall behind him would be cool? Or he has a long way to go but he's tired, so have the goal of his journey way in front of him. Sorry if this sounds like deep shit but if you don't have a strong story people are just going to look at it for 5 seconds and say "it's cool".

some people confuse thumbs with color or rendered comp sketches.

Thumbs should be "thumb size or about. after you do a few of those you can pick 3-4 of those you like and bring up to where these are now.

from there narrow it down further and pick 1 or 2.

I recomend syd meads video, i already knew how to do that from an illustration class i had taken and james gurneys book immaginitavie realism. but he really sort of emphazized it and i like his approach of really trying to understand what you are doing before commiting, by doing lots of smaller studies. color / tone / comp / details etc..

But yeah, any critique? I feel I kinda screwed a bit of it up when I started painting over it in color mode. I need to find a better way to do it.

Lot of issues everyone else has already mentioned but here some stuff a little more specific if it helps.

The shoulder should be lower, remember, the shoulder blade can slide quite a bit over the ribcage in a variety of directions, it's not stuck in a static place like your hip/pelvis interlock is.

Take this pose yourself and feel where everything is, better yet take this pose in front of a mirror if you can. For me if I was doing this pose my right shoulder would be farther forward than my left shoulder, I'd be twisting my torso slightly to keep the bow out front and easy to draw while also staying a low and not standing up straight.

Look into how an arrow is held the hand you have holding it looks super awkward. The arrow should be between the first and second fingers.

I learned what I know by studying anatomy books, art books, and the human figure in life drawing classes and studying myself in a mirror. If something confuses me about a pose I try to do the pose myself and carefully think about how everything feels. I also try to keep in mind how various joints of the body interact with the overall structure. Examples: The rib cage and pelvis are pretty much static, they pivot and move thanks to the spine, but they move as a single unit. The rib cage can be compressed or swell a bit, but it moves as a unit. The hip bones are fused together and though the femur is a ball socket in there, the upper leg doesn't move outside of rotating in that socket. The shoulder however is not a true socketed joint like the hip, there are several bones that make up the joint and the shoulder blade and clavicle all can move quite a bit allowing the shoulder a wide range of motion.

This knowledge isn't perfect and you shouldn't treat it as such, just my current understanding of stuff.

So yea... anatomy books are a good resource, so are books like stanchfield's drawn to life series (my favorite), and mattesi's force.

Depends on how well you can adapt to the hand/eye disconnect using a regular Tablet. If you find you can't draw naturally with one of those after a while, you may have to switch to a Tablet PC with stylus; you'll still be drawing with a cursor, but the hand/eye disconnect is much less.

Aside that, what bothers me the most is the legs and feet proportions and perspective.
Her left forearm and hand are weird too, kinda flat. What's the exact post of this fist? Look for reference or try to make it yourself in front of the mirror.
Post in general is kinda wrong by the way. Looks at boxers, or at least try to imagine what action she's doing, what moment of the action this is, and make gestures before final drawing.

Learn perspective
Learn what are attractive compositions (Yours is very flat)

It's fine enough as a cute, quick little sentimental gift to a GF. Even if they're all essential things to learn, if we throw all that stuff all at one time, it will go over people's head (and the only way to make use of all those at the moment is to start all over).

As for the image itself, it's fine enough as a cute little gift, even if the green bedsheets bug me (color looks closer to the color of grass) . I don't think you can really do anything much on this, other than start another one if you're inclined to make something better - following the other anon's advice.

Looks like Wacom did a little renaming of their products. Anon is probably suggesting the Intuos Pro, but if you're unfamiliar with tablets, going cheaper would probably be a better idea. The Intuos is now what used to be called the Bamboo, I'm no sure what /ic/ consensus is on that. I use a Tablet PC with pen and touch and get by pretty much without any fancy buttons.

Looking at the Wacom packages, I'd suggest staying away from Intuos Manga. The version of Manga Studio that comes with it is outdated and MS5 blows it out of the water with a much better interface for touch and ruler tools.

Looks cool.

Your design is nice, the only things that let the image down are:
1. All the colours are very saturated, with the amount of warm light and colour you are using, you probably don't need to use 'Blue' on the armour at all, just desaturate your colour and the more grey hue should do the work for you.

2. The cape, it's not as well rendered.
Go look at these guys for drapery / capes on people, they are fantastic:
Ludwig Deutsch
Rudolph Ernst
Adolf Seel

In particular search for their 'Nubian Guard' paintings, you'll get plenty of gorgeous capes / cloaks.

same for you. Siplifying is especially important if you want to be a character, weapon, car or any kind of designer.
They don't need fancy rendering, they need you to produce few designs every day so you will have to figure it out how to save time. And no.1 thing is simplifying.
You fags admire Craig Mullins, Jaime Jones, Maciej Kuciara, Kekai,.. but some of you obviously don't see why their image are powerful: VERY good fundamentals knowledge and simplifying as much as you can.

>>1711756
those textures doesn't make sense. It takes time to know how to use texture eficiently like Mullins otherwise you can ruin good fundamentals (for example you can ruin good pants design with tons of folds - draw only folds that make your design STRONGER)

fundamentals. People hide poor knowledge on fundamentals (basic form, lighting on basic forms, composition, shapes, negative/positive space, soft/hard edges,...) with tons of unimportant details, fancy effects (pointless lighsources, textures that doesn't make sense,..).
You can even see some work from Wizzards where artists don't know how to handle textures and they just ruin an overall good piece. But on other hand a lot of artist do realize how you can ruin a piece with texture so they awoid them and use mostly hard round/square brush.
using textures saves you time and its benefitial IF and only IF you know how to use them.
You can load Mullins, jaime Jones or Kekai's brush set but it won't do a shit for you.

they're too stiff, use the side of the pencil, do concise and assertive strokes.

grab a softer pencil and a better quality paper.

Okay, I'll try to make them more dynamic, use the side of the pencil and be more assertive about it :)

These were made in a cheap 15 by 21 cm sketchbook with a mechanical pencil.
I understand why i should use another pencil, but i can't imagine how better quality paper should help my drawing?

There's your problem, you're using the pencil like a pen, that's a more advanced technique that you should use when you're much better.
Buy normal pencils within the HB-4B range, use HB for construction, light rendering, use the softer ones from 2b to 4b for gestures and rendering.

I see this a lot with beginners, either use a pen or don't use it at all. The entire point of the pencil is the graphite, you use it to make good and concise rectangular in shape strokes like with a palette knife, so you're essentially sculpting the form. Then you can either grab a soft tissue and use it to break down the graphite into a nice soft gradient.
If you really want to go for the strokes around the form thing then you need to practice spacings between each stroke you make, preferably with a pen. The gray is simply not enough to cause a good contrast between the white of the paper for it to look good, so instead it just looks grayish muddy. That means either grab a pen or learn to put multiple strokes in one place aswell as in every direction.

Different papers give different textures, a soft paper is better suited for the first method and watercolors, a more crisper and rougher paper is suited for the strokes method. Your sketchbook is likely more acceptable of the former.

I really need to work on being assertive when drawing.

I wouldn't exactly consider myself a beginner, but I might still do beginner mistakes.. Oh well XD..
I am very grateful for your comment and help

It's not very manga-ish, and even less chibi-ish.
the eyes are too small, the nose is too big and the mouth is just a symbol. The ear is still waaaaay too small.
I might try to draw guide for you, but i'm not really into drawing manga either

I appreciate the sketch but I'm not really going for a manga style. I mean, when I was drawing it I kept thinking that it was the most anime-influenced thing I'd ever drawn, but I'm not going for the big-eyes chibi look. I do appreciate the draw though, and I'll probably be stealing parts of those lips, that nose, and that ear. Thanks again!

When I said "it looks all chibi" I meant it in a bad way, I wasn't going for those kinds of proportions. As for "this looks so anime," it does look like an anime styled thing, which "I never draw like."

Why are we even arguing semantics, though? I mean, I can honestly say I'm not going for that style, but I'm not angry about it or anything. I'm just trying to work on this drawing and get it as polished as I can. I appreciate and love the critiques on the drawing, but I don't really need the 4chan-level arguing over minutia on my wording.

Thanks!

I really like that, man. Part of me wants to say you should work on the line weight a bit to get them more consistent, but at the same time I love slightly sloppy look to it. The colors are awesome.

I'd say try and clean up some of the lines in the foreground, such as the foremost light post, and the (wall? dock?) between the foremost light post and the street level. Don't touch the stuff in the background so much.

How'd you get that smudgy look? What program did you use?

That looks pretty rad, I'm really jealous of the coloring. Really sharp and smooth gradients, and cool line work. What's with Ryu's face though? The face looks really ape-like.

Done with the line-work. Jesus I haven't spent this much time on a drawing in a very long time. The armor's not perfect but god damn it looks pretty good to me.

Gonna try to convince myself to paint this tomorrow. I'm dogshit awful with colors so there's a good chance this is just going to stay linework. Moved the head forward a bit on the neck, I think it really helped make it seem more anatomically correct and less like she's leaning back all fucking weird, like in >>1712283

I'm using Corel Painter X3 and it's pretty good if you're into fine art (ex: you know how to paint with acrylics, watercolors, how to use different pens, charcoal, ect.)

I don't know shit about inking or painting though
