You should establish the values of the whole first! Zoom out, use a big brush, and get all of your large value relationships down. Once you're satisfied with them, zoom in and refine

It's next to impossible to make anything out when zoomed out. With that in mind, her spine is broken, her legs are way too long, her arms might be a bit long.

There's also lots of problems with the head. The face is too large for the head, her nose is too long for her face (and might be too small in terms of volume). She's also missing an ear. The neck is poorly realized, and you should consider including clavicles.

thanks for the advice. coloring scares the shit out of me. i'm so terrible at it.

the problem i have with blocking though is i don't really know how detailed i should get with it. i'm not confident enough in my blocking to place something without trying to detail the surrounding anatomy so i know i made the right decision, but that's just getting ahead of myself.

but i'll start over and try again!

>what makes you say that? do you not think the pose is possible?
The general pose is possible, but there's too sharp of a kink in the back. Take off your shirt, stand in front of a mirror and try it out for yourself. What's your max range of motion while keeping the rest of the pose consistent? How comfortable is that pose? Could you envision a real person making that pose?

>i feel like if she stood straight, this would be proportionate
The pubic bone is generally at the midpoint in height when standing upright. The back leg might be fine, but I'm fairly sure the front leg is too long.

>Really? I feel like I followed muh loomis.
The browline is generally measured at the keystone shape of the skull - a little lower than you have it. The nose line should correspond to the lowest point on the nose when viewed from the front. Also, because her head is angled downward, the proportional relationships of the face also distort in perspective: the segment from the top of the head to the brow should be a bit longer than brow to nose, which is a bit longer than nose to chin. The reverse relationship would be the case if she were looking upward.

I would appreciate some input particularly in regards of composition (left vs right), body proportions, pose, symmetry and whatever you may find wrong or can be improved.

In b4 drop it, stop polishing turds, etc...

Btw if I want to colorize this, should I keep adding grayscale value? I was very underwhelmed by the overlay mode on SAI so I was wondering if this is the same case with PS or I'm simply doing it wrong.

Somewhat. I think the biggest issue right now is that the eyes are a bit high, making the nose seem longer than it is. I tried my hand at a redline, focusing on the skull construction so that the eye socket is placed correctly. It's far from perfect, and I probably altered the likeness you were going for, but hopefully it gives you some ideas at the very least.

>I maintained her long legs, because the i expect samus to have very long legs.
I wasn't sure if you addressed the spine issue yet, but I feel the legs might be longer than what's anatomically normal. I drew this redline earlier more for fun and practice, but I might as well post it too in the event it's somewhat helpful. This one too is far from perfect, and I unknowingly changed her torso twist a bit.

If another anon wants to point out any place I fucked up, feel free to jump in because I'd appreciate the learning opportunity.

______

And as an aside, samus's boots typically have at least some heel, which would change the position of her foot should you choose to incorporate that.

>> No.1704796

>>1704614
Composition wise, both feel too tight above her head. Too little breathing room. The one on the right could have a very scenic environment included if you gave it more room. Should you choose that right, copy your image and shrink it down to the size of a thumbnail. Then try out many different big value shapes to find a composition you like.

For proportions, those legs seem a little thin for her frame. Decide what age she's supposed to be, and let that guide your proportions.

Symmetry: Her head might be a bit far to the left compared to her neck.

>Btw if I want to colorize this, should I keep adding grayscale value? I was very underwhelmed by the overlay mode on SAI so I was wondering if this is the same case with PS or I'm simply doing it wrong.
Even in photoshop, there's no super effective way to add color with blending modes. You can use it to establish some groundwork, but you'll still have to do a ton of opaque painting on top so that it doesn't look like shit.

If you're serious about fleshing this out into a painting, I highly recommend doing some thumbnail exploration first, using what you already have as a base. Try out different background ideas, different value arrangements, and different lighting conditions (front lighting is boring!). I feel like having her in the shade in the foreground, and a well lit elaborate royal garden in the midground might work nicely. If you give it enough vertical room maybe even a castle in the background.

i have the side of the hip facing rather direction toward the viewer, since the last outline, adjusted her pelvis to not be as rotated forward as before, which i think makes the pose seem significantly more natural. my main concern at the moment is establishing a more powerful core, but am worried i would lose the litheness of the character.

i'll test out shorter legs, and do a proper measurement for them.

in terms of face, i always envision the character with high set eyes because it gives a mature/superior sort of vibe to me, but i may be straying out of the realm of anatomical realism.

and i could assuredly do something more interesting with at least the back arm. not sure what. the pose doesn't seem natural at all.

most of the games portray the suit as if it has a pocket for each breast, and supports them pushed up forward, but i figure to keep them out of the way as much as possible, it would instead flatten them in a single tight pouch, which is what i went for, but maybe i failed?

>it would instead flatten them in a single tight pouch, which is what i went for, but maybe i failed?
The zero mission concept art has them separated. I image that would look like two separate cups that hold them in place. If you want to do the unified approach, it'd look more like a sports bra, so find references of those. With that, the bottom of the breast would have a sharp transition to the chest wall, with little to no excess fabric. To me, yours looked like there was fabric between the bottom back of the breast and the chest wall (like socks for boobs almost). If they're a unified mass, focus on the major planes and be careful were you place lines, as they can make the breasts appear to hand separate from each other and the chest wall.

Also, is that a portal within that giant circle? Is there another portal of sorts within the snail shell as well? Maybe I'm just tired, but I'm not sure if parts of this are meant to be less literal and more abstract, and if so to what degree.

I do like the color palette, the boat, the water, and the shell though. The snail's head is underwhelming by comparison, but I guess it's still a WIP.

I suggest focusing less on lines and more on shading! If you're going for a more realistic style, you should focus more on the values of lights and darks than the lines themselves. Don't be afraid to push the shadows more! Also, the lines on the nose bridge are a little overwhelming. You can make these less intense by shading around the nose and facial area. Also, work on the position of the eyes. Other than that, it looks good! I like the eyebrows and the mouth, they look great!

Also, here's a picture of the kind of shading i was talking about and a redline.

dude people do that aaaaaall the time. there's nothing questionable about it. it's one of the many natural phases of the journey. sometimes it's really fun to take a "shot" from someone else and just replace the stuff inside and see how good you can pull it off. everyone does it. even if only subconsciously.

I'm a painter. I have recently started this painting. It's a female with tentacles for hair. The filling of the tentacles is a galaxy.

The top right is a sea horse holding a ghost with a sailor cap.

You can't exactly tell right now, but the setting is in the sea. There will be more sea creatures and the top left will be a man in an old timey diver suit. Much like the suits seen on BioShock.

The painting will be named "Galaxsea". Sort of a pun since the woman's tentacles are a galaxy. And my signature is down bottom.

I come to ask if there are any improvements I can make to my painting?

I already see a select few. The nose chin and nose aren't precisely on the same line of focus. The septum piercing is a little too big on one side and is also crooked.

Other than that I would need help from you guys. It's still a work in progress and I would appreciate the help.

Lookin' good, but I'd question if the top priority for this is the edges on the face. It all depends where you're going with it, but try putting in some opaque, considered strokes in there to compliment up the transparent loose work you have.

Yes, that one. Look at how he draws in shadow shapes, keeping separation of light and shadow in mind as well as modelling out the features, and then washes over it and defines the biggest planes. It's like the middle-ground between drawing and painting, and if you pushed it more in that direction then you might be able to get better painted portraits out of it.

>> No.1705556

>>1705544

I don't care if it's "cartoonish," the anatomy is fucking awful. Also, was there really any need for you to list off everything about your piece? Anyways, here's some constructive crit on your anatomy because apparently you can't look in a damn mirror or even google a portrait photo.

>her right eye is absolutely fucked, not in perspective or even on the same plane as the face
>left shoulder is just a straight line, what?
>head is positioned off of the neck
>neck is far too wide

I'm sure there's more, but other than that, you have good quality of line for the most part and I really dig the galaxy shit going on in the hair. Please don't bullshit and tell yourself this is good though, it has some good elements, but as a whole it's just not.

well i'd say your main problem is that you haven't got a lot of solidity in there. everything save the face and the lower arms is very squishy and formless.
also the pose is strange. google 'walk cycle' her other foot wouldn't stay flat on the ground like that if she's believably in motion. the whole pose looks sorta painful overall, honestly. ditto with the harp-hand, having a finger raised that high while the other fingers are pressed low is pretty uncomfortable if you try it yourself.

on the whole, your drawing aesthetic is cute, your colouring's not bad, work on your anatomy form and gesture.

Your drawing is preety good, but you don't seem to understand values and edges. What to do:

-Think of the bigger form (e.g. cylinder for the whole arm) and render it accordingly, then go for smaller details.
-Don't outline everything with a black line. Divide your image into lit areas and shadow areas and assign a value range to each area. (it's about being subtle)
-Think about the form. There is no such thing as "concave shading", just planes. Google "Ambient occlusion".
-Light intensity. The further from the light source, the darker.
-DON'T NEGLECT THE HANDS!

For hair and fur it's as easy as finding some reference and randering the bigs form first, then individual strands.

the way you've shaded the pectoralis major makes it look bulbous but theres supposed to be a flatter(or maybe even concave) area below the pit of the neck

Also watch where the pecs insert into the arm. Deltoids are thinner at the top than they are closer to the middle. Also the figure looks like hes shrugging (i think thats unintentional), so fix the forms of the clavicle and the trapezius.

That neck looks odd.

Hey.

I have about 15 different penis portraits.
I'd love to draw a massive one or two on canvas in colour. or even have my own gallery.

Started as a thing to cheer someone up, then I got a LOT of requests from friends and friends of friends.

Tips? I wanna be better, I'm not that good at drawing.

I might even make a kickstarter for it.

Hi, i think this is my second time on this board, the thing is; i started drawing after years and years of not really drawing anything when i bought this silly drawing thing for my nintendo 3DS because my friend had it too, thing is, i'm now totally hooked on drawing and i regret not starting sooner, so right now i'm looking for a drawing tablet and i'm sure this board get's asked this a lot, but i could really use your help in choosing one, i'm browsing the amazon.co.uk site now and i don't really know what i should look for in a tablet.

What are you guys using?

pic related, just drew it, it's not much but i'm happy how much i've made progress in just a week, a week ago i drew pretty much completely flat pictures.

Sorry for being rude. I understand you, I came forth like a bitch.

I am designing from game perspective, which in my own theory should be connected to silhouettes and colors first and details later. In Chrono Trigger you have very distinct schemes for each character to translate well to the sprites.

The plan is to make a group picture in the end.

You got nice rendering going on, I like the eyes, the one on our right especially. Try measuring stuff out multiple times and comparing each feature to each other feature to make sure you have everything in the right places before you start rendering. Need some atmosphere in that, lower contrast the further it is from the viewer. Eye being led towards nothing maybe put a focal object at the end- a figure or some sort. Trees shouldn't align so uniformly, nor should they be so close to each other. Try to simplify that grass into a larger form and just indicate the ends of it

If youre going for a really sp00k4me shot you could do like a view from the ground and have the trees loom over. Colour scheme is alright, you got a mood going with the orange sky.

You decided where the light is coming from, you tried to portray it but you had no idea how exactly it effects the larger forms.

Holy shit, I think I figured out a minor trick to the Ruan/based chinese style value control by color picking an image. Basically they keep all the values within a super small range, and the average highlight is just about right in the middle at a midtone on the color picker. Some deep shadows are barely a smidge darker than some of the midtones/highlights. shiz is crazy but it looks magical.

It seems like its a code to crack, like once you get it, you get it. Anyone else made any amazing discoveries relating to this style?

In that case, I suggest drawing a lot of faces from life, with something like a brushpen. It will look like shit quite often, but you'll get a natural "feel" of what looks right, without having to use construction and you'll build a big visual library. Part of the faces will practically be from memory because people tend to move unexpectedly.
Also try Loomis' construction method on magazine pictures and what not: just draw the lines on top of the pictures.

you are trying to render too soon form starting.

more underpaiting is needed.

feels like you went into it from the start with a medium to small sized brush.

start loose and finish tight, even if working from a photo (i know you are because of that damn awful lense distortion).

other than that, i like the color pallet very much, good eye on that.

Ignoring the parts that aren't done or corrected yet (arms and hair), could anyone help me with the nose and eyebrows?
A quick redline would be very much appreciated!

Now that you mention it, I was unsure about the leg thing. I pretty much winged the horse part and tried hiding the legs in the plants, should probably change that.
Thank you though

this is an interesting concept.Yet I've looked around some pictures and this doesn't apply too well.Yet the pieces look good.Like this pic.darkest light value easily goes into the lightest mid values and vice verca.Wouldn't that be concidered as "mudding" the values? And if so,why doesn't that look muddy ?

I found that it just fluctuates between cool and warm colours a lot and sticks to greys in between. In this method you could just probably start with black/white then add some hints of colour, but thats easier said than done

>Yet the pieces look good.Like this pic.darkest light value easily goes into the lightest mid values and vice verca
Are you sure about that, and it isn't just in a focal point? Focal points can break this 'rule' because they need to stand out from the rest of the piece through contrast (not just value of course, but color, edge, content, types of lines, etc).

It's also possible that you may be misinterpreting what shapes belong to the lights, and which shapes belong to the darks. It's equally possible that the value massing 'rule' is being broken. The apparent breaking can also be due to how the painting was converted to grayscale (assuming it was), as some methods don't do an accurate job of converting some colors to their true value.

Regardless, all that matter is a good read from the thumbnail, which this piece does well. That's really the primary goal - value massing is simply a tool to make that happen more consistently and with great control. It's not always needed, but it's one of the many ways a painting can differ from a photograph. It's up to the artist what they want to emphasize and what they want to omit. 'Breaking' the value massing at select places is one way to go about this.

I have been trying for hours to get this fucking punching pose right. I've done tons of gestures, and I cant get it to look right. It's supposed to be a wind up to a punch in the viewer's face.

Redlines would be appreciated. Or telling me what's off with it.
