I was thinking more of direct subject matter. I've been spending alot of my drawing time lately just finding pictures of people and redrawing them but I feel like theres better thing I could be doing, as in environments, or old master studies, or something along those lines. Some fine folks have developed a tipobot for 4chan that is kinda convenient to use, there are also a couple of cryptocurrencies that were born right here on 4chan (first on /g/, then had to move to /biz/, because moot).

The white of the eyes is not actually white. Eyeballs are a sphere covered by the eyelids, so you should consider the cast shadow and form shadows that form on the surface of the eye. Flat white eyes are creepy too.

A bit rough, but it looks okay. Proportions are nice, and the face viewed from below reads well. You also have a pretty decent understanding on the anatomy of the face, which is really nice. There are other faults, but they are minor. Although the lightsource is a bit vague. To really push your understanding, try other settings with single lightsource that is more dramatic.

Just a quick pet portrait that I'm doing for a friend's birthday. He's seen the picture already and loves it, so I'm not to worried about making it perfect. But I'm not entirely happy with where it's at right now. I will clean up the edges some, but another friend that saw it said that it looks better 'rough' that if I clean it up it will just look like a picture and that's boring. Thoughts?

About the eyes, depends on your intention. You can push your realism and use some shadow on her eyes, and rely on other factors to bring out the creepiness, like her expression, colors, etc. You can leave it at that if you think so. But to me, flat white eyes is a mark of an amateur artist, so do as you like. I'm starting to think that making her creepy is not your original intention though.

Other than that, define the neck area. She looks like a momiji doll right now. For the proportions, the philtrum is too defined, and maybe the space is a bit too much, but that can be ignored. The ears are also too small. Yes, the length of ears, when viewed straight from the front, will usually start from the eye area and end at at the nostrils. But you should consider the tilt of the head when drawing ears.

The colors are also monotonous and bland. Introduce more hues, and maybe experiment with the saturation of your colors. Also, mind your color temperature. Maybe cool the shadows and making the parts exposed to light more warm? Creepy as it is, it's not a particularly interesting painting, so you have some room to improve your painting more. Feel free to add more artistic touch though, doesn't have to be 100% realism in terms of colors.

Try to refer to master painters for pointers and inspiration.

Torn between loyalty and love, the queen flirted regularly with this knight. His weakness for women found him murdering the King in her lovers name. With the throne usurped, the queen placed her son on the throne and ruled in secrecy. She had her lover sent to be executed as anything less would expose her plot. He wept and cried to her but nothing could dislodge the queen. The queen ruled wisely until her son became of age. Personally I really love the minimalistic drawings like this but yours just sucks I'm sorry (it doesn't suck as bad as your attitude though) If you at least have some point to make it can be nice but it seems to me that you are too lazy to actually try so you make sitty line drawings with the pretense that is has some deeper meaning.

Take Will Larel for instance, he draws these imperfect line drawings with poor fundamentals but they have some purpose, they are funny, there is a reason to looking at it. What do you expect the audience to get out of your drawing? what experience are you offering?

>> No.1703098

>>1702787
In all honesty, you may have an interesting concept in mind, but the execution of that is lackluster. There's nothing in it for the viewer. And if you blame the audience for not "appreciating" your art there's a saying that goes: If there's one asshole, that person's an asshole; If everyone's an asshole, you're the asshole"

Plus, the technical execution is not there, just by looking at how the unnecessary background line to assume a perspective or give some sort of framing element that doesn't even touch the subjects it a subtle depth. Even if you're going for minimalistic drawings, some level of fundamentals would go a long way, since every stroke and shape counts.

To add to all that, there is no unifying visual harmony between the subjects found in this. This would have been probably better if you cut each subject from this drawing and make each of them stand-alone drawings.

Keep trying.

I'm not saying you have to make comic it was just an example.
>I wanted to offer a feeling of emptiness and also maybe longing
well you completely and utter failed at that, literally all I see are two figures in random flat poses with no real composition to speak of and some circle with space in it.

compare your image to this one I posted, okay maybe you don't want this much detail but it tells a story the figures are clearly interacting and gesticulating and the environment actually works into the whole narrative. Honestly I'm not a fan of this particular drawing either but I think it's similar enough to what you were trying to portray to make a point. Everything in your image is static and disjointed, compared that to this which is pretty dynamic and interesting, it keeps the viewer reading at least to try and figure out what is might all mean.

Don't just say 'fuck the fundamentals' Okay maybe you don't want to master anatomy, that's clearly not your goal but you SHOULD attempt to be at least proficient at the fundamentals while mastering those that actually apply to you which I think composition may be one of them, and at least try and make an effort to portray some kind of symbolism if you are going for fine art.

Okay, so I tilted the image to make the character more falling/jumping. He seemed too have a little too much balance for someone who is falling/ jumping, like he is just standing on one leg.
changed the colors a bit to more warm tones, to make it fit more with the explosion.
Brought his leg and arm more in the background.
Gave that fucker an ear.
Also the hair was really bad and stiff, gotta work on that bro.

Highlights on the eyes are a little too bright. The back bottom of the cranium is a little too high - it should loosely line up with the bottom of the nose give or take.

I want to paint a nonchalant character, like someone who gets gobbles up by his thoughts and loses touch with the outside world every now and then, but
I feel like this pose gives more of a douchbag vibe? Opinions? What do?

I wish this board had mods, specifically for these crits.

Anon step your crit game up. That was an awful contribution. It's like showing your buddy a bad drawing and he doesn't know why it's bad, because he doesn't know how to draw.

And I know these comments are a dime a dozen, but this is just uhg. You can't even point out what's wrong with the dagger? You can't suggest something better with the background? The arrangement of the buildings? The strange bloom shading of the explosion? The weak gesture and anatomy?

Shame on you anon. It should be a 2 day ban for your comment. That is all.

You did a great job capturing the likeness of the subject! The only thing I feel is off, is his ear. You got the placement right, but in the ref, the top of his ear juts out more from the head the how you made it.

You've made both of the eyes a bit too tall, the bottom of his right nostril a little low, and the bottom of the chin a little low. His jaw also need to be a bit wider, and his right cheekbone a bit higher. These small differences add up when you're going for a likeness, but you're very very close! The eyes and the chin was the only thing I noticed before I overlayed the two, so that's a good sign.

The next tricky part is to preserve and recover the drawing as you paint it. Be mindful of the light sources, major planes, and the overall forms. Pay close attention to how soft/hard edges are in comparison to other edges. And most of all, re-check all of your landmarks to make sure nothing got fudged up in the painting process.

In future studies, I want you to make the entire drawing using only straight lines. If something is curved, have a point at the curve's apex instead. If the curve is barely noticeable, just leave it as a straight. This will give your drawing more structural solidity, as straights are more definitive than curves (it also makes painting the major planes easier). Most of all, all of the points you introduce now serve as additional landmarks for comparing to the reference. It's also much easier to compare lengths and angles of line segments to see how it differs from the ref than it is for curves. Curves can always be added in later after the fact when you're painting (or in the final step of the drawing if you don't intend on painting it).

Thank you guys. I spent a while doing this and it's still a WIP. It's super muddy even though I laid out the big values. Theres still some likeness issues - facial structure, mouth and nose are off... Argh!

>> No.1703913

>>1703889
Well, there are quite a few issues with the head. First, you have the bridge of the nose starting way too high, effectively eliminating the keystone. Compare the start of the nose and the eye sockets that you have with any anatomically correct skull. You have some likeness here to the actor who plays Abed on Community, so I'd see if you could find a few stills to use as a loose ref.

Next, you have issues with fine details and contrast in the face - namely too much of both. You have areas like the cheeks painted in with large brush strokes that describe plane changes, but the eyes and nose look drawn on like a cartoon. Try using bigger brushes in those areas, be more subtle with your lights and darks, and pay attention to edge quality in the region.

You have some strange asymmetry with the collar(?) of the jacket. His shirt collar also looks like it's painted on skin - no real sense of form to it. The body is also drawn in a different style than the face, and you also have inconsistencies with the direction of the light source.

I suspect there's also too many deep blacks in the bush. They read as deep holes, and given their quantity this adds to that pine cone-like effect.

A few of those blacks are good where they help to describe the overall form, like the blacks on the left side (our left) of the bush that's on our right. The deep blacks adjacent to the flowers is the problem.

Not bad.

Some of your edges are much harder than they should be. The top edge of his upper lip, his left iris (our right), and his hairline for example. I'd also be mindful of your values in and around the eyes. You overstated the brightness of the highlights, making them look cartoonish. Try using as few values to describe the eyes as possible, keep those values low contrast, and keep edges softer than you think you need. It's easy to bump up the contrast or sharpness if you need to, but chances are you wont. As an exercise, grab a portrait by a master painter (Sargent maybe), and use the eyedropper tool to see what values and colors he uses to describe the eyes. How do those values compare to the lights and darks on the skin? Chances are they aren't substantially different.

Your approach for the hair is just bad. Stay away from thin brush strokes - use a very large brush and paint in masses of hair. Google 'Gurney Ribbon Technique' and read the first link that appears.

Squint your eyes at the reference, or step far enough away from it that you don't really see the texture of hair anymore, but large shapes of different values with varying edge quality. Use a large brush and copy those shapes. You could then add in some texture, but only where it's absolutely needed, and after everything else is in place. Imagine it like you're painting a bush, or a boulder, you want to paint the major forms accurately before you worry about surface texture.

I'd look into how master portrait painters handle short hair. It tends to universally be bold brush strokes, unless they were going with a photorealistic approach.

you need to differentiate the background from the figure more clearly. right now they're in the exact same key, flattens the image.

Are you the guy that did the portraits? And you say you color picked them?

Look, there isn't much benefit in trying to do things super quickly. Doing things right is much more important - people only care about the end result, not how long it took you. I fear that rushing your way through them is a surefire way to deprive yourself of a great learning experience - same with using a color picker.

If you want to practice a lot of portraits in a short amount of time, do them in pencil with rudimentary shading (enough to model the forms). Take your time: measure spatial relationships between landmarks and construct the head. If you're not exact with your portraiture, they will suffer. If you construct your forms meticulously and avoid using the eyedropper, you'll learn a lot more that you can apply to everything else you paint in the future, whether it's from a source or imagination.

Always have a very specific goal with every study you do. Whether you want to work your usage of color, modeling of forms, constructing forms, painting light or surface texture believably, learning anatomy, learning facial variety, etc. Your goal shouldn't be to do 'X', but faster. Speed comes on its own, and that's why I always advise against doing speed painting.

I wanted to draw a head looking down, but made it looking up because I can't draw and then drew a body that matches looking up instead of down and now I think I'll move the ear down and continue

But I failed so badly ;_;
I can't even draw the difference between up and down ;_;

if you have something that is working for you then keep doing it.

Just make sure that you know how to correct something if you mess up.
