Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

In order to do something right you must first do it wrong.

Previous Thread: >>1697194

A general message to aspiring artists: Fear is the mind killer. Do not be afraid to make mistakes as no one is perfect, you will make mistakes. Learn from those mistakes, break from your comfort zones and explore new horizons.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Actual generation of /ic/ anons will disappear in the sea of younger artists with different view on art. It's not a positive phenomenon but it's happening and it cannot be stopped. The tastes and perspectives change.

If you're talking about my learning process, then yes, several things inside the sticky were involved. I didn't learn directly from the sticky because i wasn't at /ic/ at the time, but the resources are not that different:

>drawing on the right side of the brain
>vilppu anatomy videos
>youtube mattarchambault
>lots of other articles and videos and books that i don't recall now. of which some were more, and some less useful

Honestly, why would any of these try to misguide you? You can only misguide yourself, take some responsibility.
And i say this as someone who does have a few bad habits.

> your identity should have no precedence over your artwork.

I've never said or even implied such desire. So far I would say that my works have been objectively criticized most of the time.

I don't even know why the fact of deciding to use a built-in option creates so much turmoil. I've been using 4chan longer as an Anon than as a tripfag and by my experience name/trip-fags were less likely to shitpost, imho the anons that complained about them came off as guy-fawkes-mask wearing kids irritated by the sudden realization that not everyone shared their view.

Ok, I will stop now, I really don't want to derail this thread, besides I don't have a piece to share this time.

Honestly, it's a tad busy in some areas. Places like the face need to more defined, well basically, due to human conditioning. The body shape isn't too drawing to notice unless you intensely observe. I do like the action in it though, very nice use of space as well.

>> No.1702045

>>1702043
Totally digging the style, the body shape is very nice. Something about the face is kinda lacking though, perhaps the chin and jaw line. Also that hard cut into her neck is apparent. Probably would flow better with a few muscle lines from the shoulder musculature to make is more obvious that her neck is turned. But overall me likey.

>> No.1702048

>>1702041
focus more on the face, mainly the nose and its planes, the one you have here looks flat and kind of half assed, even as an stylistical choice, which breaks down the picture.
I really dig the style and with this type of thing, spot on anatomy is not a big concern, just think more about form and remember that the face is a huge focal point, i'm not saying that everything else lacks importance, but the face tends to be a "make or break".

>> No.1702055

On the left one, I think the shoulders are too narrow for the pose. Also the left thigh needs to be a bit bigger. A problem they both have is a lack of neck, you could either make it narrower to show off more length or just make it slightly longer in general.
They both look a bit stubby because of these things.

not good, both in concept and execution. You don't improve animu style with realistic muscles, don't listen to that /ic/ dogmatic garbage, It only results in looking like those creepy faggots wearing flat masks. there you go.

left one: head is not properly connected to the ribcage through the spine. also you are thinking too flat, which made the shoulders weird.

right one: you pelvis is too low (though mine might be too high) and the legs are weird. and again, you're thinking a little too flat, you notice this especially on the face and her right shoulder.
also i just noticed: breast might be too high (i got that wrong in the redline too)

tldr: try to get more accustomed to the forms, think more 3 dimensionally.

alright alright, then here's a version where i adjusted the rest of the body to the head instead of the other way around.
what i said still applies, the head and the ribcage wasn't connected properly.

the vagina is literally within the pelvis. but that's beside the point since i didn't mention the vagina in the first place.
i said the pelvis is too low, and that's because i'm not sure if the line next to the right leg is actually still part of the groin or supposed to the ass or something. either way it wasn't correct.

Hi, >>1703269 here.
My first post was >>1703198

Just because the posts have a harsher tone to it (which shouldn't even be an issue, considering you're on 4chan of all places), doesn't make it less invalid.

Unless you're asking for asspats or something, which shouldn't be surprising because you're posting your WIPs in an art/critique board and incapable of accepting critique to begin with, stop being a lil bitch and study your fundamentals harder.

There's a reason why observational skills is so important--especially if you're still a beginner; you can't use your references to its fullest potential when you're incapable of even getting your references correct.

Yes, your tweaked image looks better, but there is still many anatomical errors. Obvious one is the jawline still, and the ears being too small and low. The head is also too small in comparison to the body, and looks incredibly misplaced due to the simplicity (also known as "Miku-fag syndrome".)

He is insulting you because you are responding to his insults. Or responding to some insults, anyway. No way to know if this is the same anon. Anyway, he's not going to stop just because you order him to stop. What you gotta do is just let go. Accept that he is calling you names. Accept that he may continue to do this. Recognize that this requires no action from you. His insults are not your problem. You will only have won when you truly do not care whether he stops or not.

He's right, though. Tits don't work that way, and you should probably study anatomy. The breasts make it look like she's supposed to be sitting straight and pushing them together and up with her arms. You know, basically like that ref image that was posted. Which is a problem since the rest of her body is not in that position. So, the perspective is wrong, and them puppies look like they have some kind of invisible force supporting them.

Also, her neck looks weirdly narrow, like it was about three times as thick back-front as it is left-right, and the eye placement, (which is what you were asking about in the first place) looks wrong. The right eye (her left) is higher than the other one, and they both seem to be drawn from the same perspective even though they're supposed to be on a curved surface, with one of them farther from the viewer than the other and closer to the "edge".

(Is there a fancy art/astronomy/any term for the part of a curved surface where the tangent intersects the point of view?)

Generally seperate light-dark into warm-cool or the other way round. The hue and saturation will change slightly.
With a single, sharp light source there will of course be "more black" in the shades, but that's not the only element.

eh, the drawing itself isn't terrible, but somehow it still feels amateurish. some areas are really flat. like the legs, or the fluttering clothes. that hand also isn't perfect, but you should already know that.
line quality could be better, do more continuous lines, be more confident in general. it isn't horrifyingly bad, but there's still a lot of room for improvement.

as for the head, i find the style rather uninteresting. i assume your understanding for heads and faces is still basic. brush up on that.

generally, there are many things you could've improved on. the boots could've looked much more interesting, the jacket could've be more than what you did, the jeans could've done with more texture. things like that.
try to pay attention to every area when you draw, and don't neglect parts. they all contribute to the whole image.

Just to show that, even if you're going to take a stylized approach, working from life is still very useful, and gives you more information about light and form than any other reference material. Although a bit harsh, these guys are right anon. Drawing from life is the fundamental part of art, you need to understand proportions and what not. Every manga artist/comic book artist had to do it. Anime is just a simplified/exaggerated version of real human anatomy and to make it look right, you need to learn the fundamentals. So if you don't want to put in the effort to learn all of that, I suggest putting the pencil down now. I want to get better at human anatomy and my sketchbook is filled with naked men and women, so whether you like it or not, you'll have to learn it in order to get better.

Jesus fucking christ, you are a fucking failure.
First, as a begginer (and a pretty stupid one may I say) you wont get anything by copying drawings, only half-way decent artists with a firm grasp of the fundamentals can get something out of studying drawings.
Now, drawing from life is actually the same as copying drawings if you don't know what the fuck you're doing, to get the most of life drawing, you first need to ponder on fundamental principles such as proportions, anatomy, perspective and structure, mindless copy, be that of drawings, photos or real life won't get you anywhere if you don't understand what you see; that's why they're called "studies" because you're studying what you see to further apply it in your own drawings, not just copying to "see if something sticks".
Finally, if you don't like reading, watch the videos listed on the sticky, you brain dead piece of shit, since you probably aren't even reading, I'll take the liberty of listing my personal favortites, just in case someone less retarded with a similar problem sees this.

If you're going for a Mucha thing, the way he used the hatching was mostly to denote the shadows on the forms. You'd have to go in with a lot more hatching if you want to emulate that. The way you have it now looks more like a texture effect than shadow.
