Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream." - Poe

Previous Thread: >>1693744

A general message to aspiring artists: Fear is the mind killer. Do not be afraid to make mistakes as no one is perfect, you will make mistakes. Learn from those mistakes, break from your comfort zones and explore new horizons.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Quick question for the people who can do both anime and semi-realistic drawings.

I've been drawing anime since I knew how to draw. I guess I consider myself pretty decent at it for my age, but since I'm planning on going to college for character design, I realize that I'm going to have to transition to a more realistic style for my portfolio, as most colleges don't accept the anime style.
How do I transition? I've been planning on moving to something similar and more accepted in the west, such as the Disney/Pixar style.
The only problem is, whenever I try to do this I can't manage to rid my artwork of the anime style.

Should I just keep drawing in my personal anime style, should I do a slow transition, or try to do something drastic more quickly? I can post my most recent drawing if it helps.

Again, I'm going into character design for videogames, comics, etc., so I'm still aiming for that cartoonish style, just not necessarily anime.

Aaah, I knew this would come up. I know I have to start drawing from real life, I'm just delaying it as much as possible.
I guess it's not as enjoyable as drawing from my imagination. I'm looking for other options besides that for now. I already have my own personal style, and I don't want to mess it all up by drawing from life for too long.

Well, show us some of your work.

I drew anime for ever pretty much, and even now, as I'm getting out of it, I still have trouble understanding form. I feel like I'm just good at symbol drawing, but most of my work is in the same pose or lighting angle. I'm not good at showing emotion in faces either, but I feel that drawing from life has definitely helped me to depart, even somewhat, from that static cut and paste stuff I normally do.

It's pretty much the only option, but this of course doesn't mean you have to stop drawing from imagination. Put what you've learned to work, you know? The time it takes will be largely dependent on, like all other learned skills, the amount you practice.

You can do cell images, but not like that. That reeks of amateur anime bs, no colleges will want you. But if you can do something like what Brosa (who clearly knows anatomy and has good enough taste to create interesting characters) is doing everyone will ride your dick.

It's not that people "hate" anime influenced art. In fact if I noticed anything at all a lot of successful artists blend their anime influence in with western things. If you want to get a job outside of deviantart that's what you'd have to do outside of asia.

There's a huge amount of people that started drawing anime like that and went on to doing great stuff ex) Ross Tran, Saskia Gutekunst, a whole bunch of other people

now now it's okay to have more subtle changes in parts of the value scale if you want to model something at the other end. there's quite a bit of black in there, if the author wanted to modern that out without losing out on the paleness of the flesh or darkness of the fabric squishing the skin tones would be fine.

I think he did best he could with what he had. Maybe you are just not used to this kind of rendering on japanese stylized drawings, which are supposed to be simplified from default. I love it because it looks good and at the same time, pokes fun at estabilished notions in stylized japanese art.

I can also see this style rustle jimmies of artists who turn to japanese stylized drawings because they wanted to avoid learning to work with difficult 3d shapes.

>it's provoking and fresh

It's generic as fuck overrendered photoshop soft brush crap that looks like fucking ass. The problem with it has nothing whatsoever to do with "japanese style drawings". Stylization in general requires an understanding of simplification where it is necessary. That paintover shows that the artist has no understanding of 3d shapes but instead relies on overrendering detail within the geometric shapes.

Look at this image for example, the shapes are kept incredibly simple and stylized, yet they are still far more solid and three dimensional than that crappy paintover.

I don't understand, what is "understanding 3d shapes" if not just creating proper geometric shapes and placing them in the right places.

The work you posted looks nice, it is kept simple and stylized, but I don't see why would anyone see it as more solid than that prievous work? These gloves actually look like a paintover of a glove from a real photo, in fact it's the same paintover glove, copied and flipped horizontally.

Find some refs of the backs of girl's heads would be my suggestion. The head looks ok, if a bit flat at the back, but necks are the hard thing from that angle, getting the connection right. The end of the hairline is tricky too, at the moment this looks like a wig; it doesn't taper out convincingly and you have the centre line of the hair the whole way down, where it would've stopped by the crown (hair crown, not the shiny metal crown). The thing round the neck seems a bit too high up at the moment too.

Keep at it though man, looks like a cool idea for a piece, and props for an interesting angle. You should be able to push the forms of the back and shoulders nicely later on with how loose or snug the bodice is to the skin, looking forward to seeing next steps.

I like it, except the overly-simple face doesn't fit the body at all. It doesn't matter how nicely you shade it, the face doesn't look right at all. I know, you could start off by trying to draw a more realistic yet still cute nose to fill all of that empty space between her nose and mouth!

Her hand looks wonky as well. I think you need to make the palm longer.

hey guys, so I've been coming back to this one off and on out of stubborness, trying to fix the anatomy. I feel like something is still really off with the shoulders. Main issue is I need to anatomy more and when I first started painting this piece the anatomy was so far off It threw everything else off, and yet I'm trying to salvage it. Any one see anything glaringly off with the anatomy, I'm aware I do things a bit stylized(small noses and coloring) but in your opinion is this something I can get away with?

>> No.1699289

>>1699238
I'd say you probably need to completely redo the body if you really want to fix the anatomy. Also, I see you're trying to give her... some kind of smirk. It hasn't much worked. If you look at pictures of people smirk or smiling, it's not just their mouths that are affected. It's their cheeks, their brow, or the mouth even. The mouth doesn't just simply tilt.

Your rendering is not awful, it's OK if we look at small sections, but a lot of it simply doesn't agree with your light source.

The hair is a gradient. I can't really help you on that one. Try looking online and finding pictures of real people to practice anatomy on, or even better, yourself. You are your best reference in anatomy.

That extreme jut from that same leg is a bit off putting, but we could reason that the jut is actually just the hip. But then, that would mean the torso attaches to her right leg, instead of the waist.

I was wrong before, THAT is some crazy ass porn.

Nice fix on the leg for the other pose, but I just noticed the torso has a bit of a chubbiness to it. Either the back is too jut out, or her stomach is. This is without noting the shoulder blade is depressed, and the back doesn't bend, but bulges.

Also, I think it would be more effective and fitting with her already established stuff to have much more soft mouth shading ala Haruhiko Mikimoto. That line is a bit too overstated to go with the rest of the rendering he did.

But yes, having the eyes "smile" is pretty much a necessity, other wise you have a broken, forced, fake smile.

Yes I agree the torso is too long, I tried again and again and that length is the only one that I like since it's proportionate to the vehicle as well as the seat.

The hair, and that hand is the issue I'm currently displeased with, telling me it looks wrong isn't helping me not make it look any better~

Use a ref which doesn't look like an amputee, geez.
For starters, what is she looking at? Put in some context. Her eyes look like they're looking in different directions.
The arm doesn't support the body. Her right shin is as flat as paper, knee is broken. Foreshortening on the left shin is weird, it looks too short. Neck is in a weird angle compared to the body, as if she's stretching her neck or something.
Fix the construction before rendering.

>> No.1700606

The neck is dislodged from the torso, the femur bone is dislocated from the pelvis, she has no fingers, the figure is out of proportion, poor line quality, it has no feet, there is no side plane for where the ear would be, eyes are too close together, the spine has been snapped in half.

>Ahue, redline it huehuehue

No, that would call for completely redrawing it and by the looks of it you wouldn't benefit from a redline anyway.

Okay then.

I don't understand the hands. They don't make sense to me. I do t know what they're doing or how its supposed to be posed.

It means that you have difficulty attaching the hand to the arm, how to gesture with hands, and manipulating them by angle and perspective. This isn't something that I could simply tell you that such and such is done wrong and how to fix it, it means you need to go and learn yourself some hands and fix this in the work, doing it over and over until you are comfortable with leaving it alone.

This one in particular is leaning a bit too much.

You dont acualty know that. I didnt too when I started drawing (i drew like you). Trust me until you wont start observing things from life, photos, anatomy books etc you wont know how it looks. The lower leg looks pretty good! I'd use that instead of my redline if I were you. You can make a healthy combination of the two.
Redline: Tilt the head and fold the upper leg a bit more so the feet don't meet.
Bluepinkredline: Use the lower leg you drew, cause it looks good.
You managed to save the arm situation with the pillows somewhat but be careful cause they already seem kind of out of the blue. Think of some context to put them in (if you decide not to mess with the arms).

You dont need to fix them. Drop this drawing. i encurage you to read the sticky and work for cuple of weeks on anatomy, watch scott roberson videos on perspective so you will know how to place things on the ground correctly. Do gesture drawings. Just grind it.

then after cuple of weeks you can start doing poses combining the knowlege of gesture, perspective and anatomy.

I know its hearthbreaking when someone bashes your drawing but its accualy better for you.

videos i recomend:

michael hampton analitical figure drawing; its on rutracker

a gesture drawing is a drawing that focus on the "feel" and rythm of a figure. Its first thing you do when drawing a pose. Its not that important at this stage to be propotion correctly.

http://artists.pixelovely.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/
here is a site that can be used as a tool for practise the gesture drawing. The goal is to draw the pose in 2 minutes for e.g and with as little lines indicate what the figure is doing.
you should always draw feets and hands in the gesture because it help define the figure in space ( triangle as feets will do in this stage)

Yeah, I figured that much. You have a uncoordinated understanding of drawing. Your trouble is you can't get any of theses concepts to work together organically. And I think the reason for that is you're umware of the truncated stuff that went to your resources. It's a very common problem with people who actually go through the sticky. It's not your fault entirely, most people follow the sticky so as to feel a part of something. It gives them a sense of comardare. But soon or later your going to ask yourself, what's more important: learning to draw for yourself or learning to draw like your friends?

Kind of difficult to explain; Part of it from visual memory, i.e drawing from scratch or off the top of your head and using designs from other existing works (let's say Iwahara Yuji as potential reference.)

The other part was influence from other designers I suppose. Like those character design sheets you see people do for japanese video games and anime and what not.

Clothes part is...admittedly based off of whatever potential design philosophies from JRPG designers, Tetsuya Nomura being a key reference.

I'm not entirely sure if /ic/ hates his guts or not, but in any case, his way of drawing clothes, outragoeus as they are, is pretty helpful when drawing something stylized.

tl;dr picturing an outline of the character (or clothes) and then working on details.

like i said, you do have a point in that people shouldn't just practice fundamentals all the time, they also need to practice creating what they want more often (finished works etc).

you also got a point in saying that anatomy is more well received around here since it's an aspect that is easier to judge. some people may lose themselves too much in anatomy to get ic's approval.
those are all real problems around here. it'd be much better if we focused on presentation in general rather than technicality.

Scanner makes paper drawings look really bad, I'd need a really good camera. But then again, I wouldn't even have anyone to show it to. I have 20 followers on my tumblr and no point posting on /ic/ because tbh I see what is wrong with these damn drawings, more or less... that's why I generally only lurk /ic/.

Aren't you afraid that one day you'll get a professional tablet and all this wrist practice will be rendered useless? I know I'm a bit afraid

>Also, you should work on your structure and proportions, mainly facial, but overall they as well other fundies need work.
Yes, I'm planning to force myself to do exercises from books exclusively for some time. How will it go I don't know

Maybe I'll post something again like in half a year

i don't think anyone is failing here. true, they give anatomy a little too much importance over the other things, but it's still improvement one way or another.
i mean they are obviously "not there" yet, but you'd be a fool to think that it could happen that easily, with or without the sticky. it's a gradual process.

and again, please show me what you can do if you are such a natural learning sensei.
or if you want to, i'll show my art if you show yours, or vice versa. (although i only used a few things from the sticky, but i used other similar stuff)

and another thing: the sticky is just a collection of resources. how many times does this need to be said ffs.

Same, but for me the difference between paper and digital is huge. Maybe because I started digital first, only then moved to paper

>I never said I was guru
right. and yet you're trying to tell others where their pursuits will end?
i mean you sure act like a guru.
i don't know, i think one should at least have something to show for it if you're going to lecture others like this.

>if you're so sure of everything
i'm not sure of anything really.
but what about you? you seem so sure about the sticky being the devil. why is that?

now who the better one is doesn't matter, because i doubt any of us are where they want to be art wise. unless you're really that advanced.
that being said, this is my art >>1700943.
now your turn pls.

Hey FAGGOT, did you know that this made up excuse only happens if you work for about eight or more hours EVERY SINGLE DAY? Also, if you're not using a laptop your wrist is already tired from hodling the mouse, which also can lead you to this without working at all.

what? that drawing with your wrist is one of the worst things you can do? not only skill wise but as an overall unhealthy practice?
Yeah, don't worry, i'm sure most people here get that.
