I feel like my school is the only one that didn't have archery
now how the hell do you hold an arrow
I guessed that you hold it in between your pointer and middle finger and you hold the bow on the handle below where the arrow is set

yea man, as previous anon said, it's the lower lip, and her neck, check the back of her neck and it's transition into the cranium and into her shoulder, it looks.... strange. if she's got her head tucked that close in you're not gonna have such a clean jawline either, i don't think.

also her lower leg is waaaaay to long, i mean i get it's a prosthetic but unless you're gonna add the same extra long calf to the other leg it looks a bit odd.

great gesture though the thumb definitely reads well and it's got a definite feeling of motion

What you describe is a lack of visual library, probably paired with an untrained hand. The link is basically a tutorial for building your visual library in regards to a specific subject, but your visual library can be built from your everyday experiences. Along with what some other anons have mentioned, the sticky is a great place to start, as well as Feng Zhu's FZD videos.

Feng talks about the importance of a strong visual library and gives lots of good advice for building your own as well as other constructive concept art tips.

First, have you been studying your studies? So many people study as far as their blessed little hands can take them, but for all that effort they don't DO anything with it. Look over your studies again, write down what you learned, wait a day, see what you remember - take breaks while you're doing other pieces, flip through your notes, make sure you're not forgetting what you learned. You're not passive about critiquing yourself, don't be passive about learning, either.

As far as the piece, you're not rendering in forms and you haven't created a clear separation between light and shadow. Remember, planes in shadow and in light need their own very distinct set of tones - read Pyle's notes on Light and Shadow. I did a really basic (poor) paintover, but hopefully it gets across what I'm trying to say.

Also, reference, and watch your edges.

You're not thinking it through, the image you posted is already an amazing reference for what you're trying to accomplish. Take the information that it's giving you, gesture in a figure with that in mind, and then adjust.

Look at how the bow is embedded against his palm, how the force of it is pushing his hand back in a bit, how the bow bends, how he's holding the bow and the arrow, how he's lining it all up. It's all there, you just have to find it.

Take your time with the initial construct and placement of landmarks then. Double and triple check that everything is in the right place before the drawing itself actually begins. Once you have the drawing, check again that everything is in the right place, then slowly begin the painting while trying to recover the drawing. If you take it slow and stick to your measurements and construction once they're correct, you shouldn't have any proportional problems.

I like this messiness. What I don't like too much are the colors. It's a wip I guess, so you're going to change some things, but I think the palette is very boring.

The floor/rocks are all the same colors, only a bit darker here and lighter there. Put some variety into it, some reflected light, grass, different colored rocks etc. Same with the creature. It's very... purple.

Its color and the background colors are not very harmonious, make them melt together better. also, more values to the background.

If your proportions are off, then your initial construction was off. Take your time in that step. If you're working from a reference, use visual measuring techniques to find and place your landmarks before the construction begins. Not drawing an eye, but what you've been conditioned looks like an eye or represents an eye. For example, if you wanted to draw a sun, instead of just drawing a circle with spikes around it, the well known symbol for a sun, you look at and study a sun, then simply or characterize it.

Hm, the best way to describe symbol drawing would be when you look at kids artwork. When a person has eyes, they don't think "sphere" instead they they think of a flat circle shape, or as they grow out of being kids, a flat football shape. Symbol drawing is how most people draw before learning about things like perspective in more in depth ways. For example, in your drawing you made her left eye smaller because it was farther away, this is the most basic type of perspective and the first kind that we learn about and know how to use (big things are close! small things are far away!), but you might also notice that it doesn't exactly wrap around her face like it should, this is because you know an eye as a 2d shape (like one of a flat football) as opposed to thinking it as a 3d one (like one of a sphere). You "know" what an eye is supposed to look like, but it holds no depth because it's just a flat shape! The world around us is not! We have depth! We know a can is "supposed" to look like a rectangle, but in all actuality, it's a cylinder! Symbol drawing is the problem of taking objects and drawing them how we think they're "supposed" to be drawn.

Not him, symbol drawing is drawing what you think you see or what you think something looks like, instead of the actual shapes and forms of the subject you are want to draw.

It's a real thing and many beginners have a sudden moment where it 'clicks' for them.
The commonly used example is indeed the eye,
it has little to do with 2D versus 3D however. A lot of artist are perfectly able to make photorealistic copies of something, while they have poor understanding of forms in 3D space.
It's more "eye = circle with dot inside" while the eye you are seeing in a particular reference might consist of completely different shapes.
When it comes to hair, symbol drawing results in "spaghetti hair" where every strand is drawn separately, while real hair consist of group masses.

I don't know what you want, but symbol drawing is a real thing. No one can understand form perfectly when they first start drawing, so they fill the hole of knowledge with symbols -- what they 'think' is there. Pic related - The eyes are just circles with dots. We all know that eyes don't "actually" look like that; it's a SYMBOL for an eye.

You people are just playing semantics. If so much of it relys on the cognitive processes you can't really point something after the fact and say its symbol drawing. You're just changing the interpretation after it has already been made. You're really saying a graphic representation didn't suite your expectation. This symbol drawing thing is bullshit term to blanket a lot stuff about a drawing you can't articulate because you don't know how. Admit it, if something is not shaded, porpotioned, and delineated in a manner that appeases you it's symbol drawing.

Well, I was thinking of a demon either seeking redemption or being banished from hell, and in the process losing much of his older powers (something like he was shamed and had his horns sawed off and wings ripped off, and when on the earthly plane his is sickly and gaunt). I was thinking he was a great general in the underlords army of sorts and saw some sort of traumatic event that would push him over the edge to want to stop being 'evil' or he refused to carry out some deed and was banished.

Ive really bee thinking of a re-envisioning of judeo christian 'lore'. like he was trained by some very powerful demon lord and after his banishment he would need to defeat them in order to move on. still in very baby stages but ive always wanted to do something revolving around this.

You're not doing it wrong, you're just drawng a lot of detail (like indicatingall the joints) that you would'nt do below a minute.

Try a few gestures with a thick brush and long lines connecting the head and the weight bearing foot, this is a method you can use for very quick gestures (10 to 30 sec).

You got quite some proportion issues, but I think that will fix itself if you keep doing quick gestures daily.

Hey /ic/, so I've been trying to get down anatomy, and although I've been at it rigorously I keep fucking it up. When I draw from reference it seems to go okay but trying to draw anatomy from imagination it always turns out so angular and blocky. Like I try to get down some lines for the form but I almost always fuck up where the arm attaches to the body (armpitandshoulder) and the waist leading into the thigh. It just always looks soo unnatural to me. so now that I've bitched, I want to ask for some help, what anatomy studies worked for you guys? I just started reading through Bridgeman and I also picked up some Sheppard which has been helping better than Bridgeman. Any help would be appreciated because I feel stuck.

Anatomy is not something you learn overnight, it takes years of practice to get decent anatomy, just keep that in mind so you don't beat yourself up over not getting it.

I honestly have found that there isn't really any wrong way to go about it, as long as you draw from reference and study the body once in a while you should be steadily improving, just like you would with other fundamental skills.

I dig the doodles man. Not sure about your problem but it doesn't seem significant enough to bother with. Unless its actually lagging for a split second when it does it. Try downgrading? CS6 is kinda bloated compared to 4 I think. Not much new to justify the additional resources it requires.

Rounded things are often stronger if drawn with angles anyway.

Alright. So given the angle the leg is at, it looks like it's digging into the edge of that block. We should see some deformation on his thigh and buttox if they're bearing any weight. If you're having trouble seeing this, then draw the same pose from different vantage points. Side view, maybe even top and back views.

That's also a pretty uncomfortable position. Try it out yourself in front of a mirror. I'd give the block more depth and let the thigh and butt plant firmly on it to bear the most weight. This would also elevate the knees somewhat.

In short, be mindful of weight distribution, and try out poses yourself to see what's comfortable. If you have a camera or a large mirror, you can even get references to use.

It's a driver issue. Here's the thorough solution:

1) Uninstall the wacom drivers. Delete wacom setting preferences too (there's a utility that does this).

2) Go into the device manager and uninstall+delete any mentioning of a tablet (usually under Human Interface Devices).

3) Restart PC

4) Download the newest drivers from Wacom

5) Install newest driver

6) Restart PC

7) Test it out. If it still acts funny, repeat steps 1-6 again. If it still doesn't work, try using a different driver. If you google the problem you'll find people mentioning different drivers that worked for them. The newest driver straight from Wacom is ideal though.

_________
Now let's say you've done all that and you got your tablet working. A few months down the line the problem reoccurs. Instead of going through all those steps, try this first:

1) Close Photoshop

2) Run services.msc as an administrator

3) Stop the WacomISD service and wait a few moments.

4) Start the WacomISD service and wait a few moments.

5) Launch photoshop and test.

I think with your arms dont be afraid to have them actually touch the side of your human. When you relax your arms at your side, they do touch your body. In your drawings they seem to appear positioned awkwardly away from the body with this kind of gap.

Also there are a lot of problems with your picture on the bottom right. I'm assuming you watched the Sycra video on foreshortening which is why you are using the spring thing for the arms. But yours are going big to small where it should actually be the opposite (the subject becoming closer to you) and is small to big. As well as your facial structure is pretty off and the eyes are located way too far up her head.

The old CTC combat model has been out of service for several decades. However a rumor persists..... A corrupt AI managing an outer fringe world had its colonists slaughtered. The colony converted to a war factory which would be churning thousands of CTC combat models every day to wage war against man. But that is just a rumor I hear.

That's funny I was thinking the same thing on your previous post.

First of all, I'm a different anon.
Second, nobody needs "help" if you're not prepared to back it up, plenty of people come here, get fed shit posts like yours and then spend an entire year without making any progress, take a hint on how to make an actual proper effort next time you post. As for loomis, he explains everything just fine, it's not the dead guy's fault you're an imbecile.

I see this parroted a lot, but I've never actually seen any evidence for this.
I've read all of his books, and I don't he mentions it at all.

Is it normal for your ideas to be lacking in the beginning, or does this indicate a poor visual library?

Hi! I hope you're still lurking the thread.

Can you tell me what settings you're using in Photoshop? What brushes, flows, etc? I feel like I can never create anything as visually stunning no matter what I try to do.
