Last thread I was recommended Vipplu and Proko as alternatives to Loomis because I just don't fucking get Loomis. I take it that Vipplu's Essential Drawings video is the one I need to watch right? How the hell do I find these videos when I'm a poor faggot who can't afford them?

first off, it's really stiff, and that can be helped with gesture. Your proportions are at least not awful, you just have to apply that to gesture to get stuff that doesn't look stiff.

I would suggest getting Vilppu's drawing manual (through legal or illegal means), and going through that, doing the exercises and all.

Your shadows and rendering are quite soft and bad, but that stems from not completely understanding the forms you're drawing. This will come with practice AND study. The exercises in Vilppu's book concerning drawing the 3D shapes in different viewpoints and ways will teach you to understand form. Anatomy is just putting those forms together. Also, the light source is very very inconsistent.

i hope this helps.

Maybe, maybe not, you should have something to show for it when you've been at it for about 100hours or so. But truth is you may have hit a plateau and just have to keep slugging until things click and you jump up another level.

What are your goals with it? What are you trying to achieve? What are the weaknesses you see in them? Try to conquer those.

But seriously, do some more long form sketches, doing nothing but this is not very useful given where you are currently at.

Just my pleb opinion, take it for what you will.

This. Plus you need to apply these if you're not already. Do figures from imagination and some from reference (but NOT copying, use the reference to inform your decisions only). Studies or the same exercise over and over takes forever to see a decent improvement. But applying your knowledge, then studying, then applying again? That's what leads to getting better overall.

Not sure if the questions were rhetoric, but here goes.
>What are your goals with it?
I want to paint/draw illustrations from imagination, as realistic as Algenpfleger, as dynamic as Artgerm and as painterly as Craig Mullins.
I started with the human figure since that's about the most important subject in art.
>What are the weaknesses you see in them?
The main weakness I saw was gesture, so I did more gestures and watch/read about gestures, but I feel like the gestures have only gotten worse.
Foreshortening is also a problem, tied to me still having trouble with sense of form, despite practicing a lot of "drawing through the form" and doing stuff from life.

This is something that took me longer, forgot to log, so don't know how long exactly.

Dude, as I said before, step away from using manikins/abstractions/simplifications. Maybe use it just at the very start for the gesture, and use cylinders to help with foreshortening. But then draw what the actual anatomy looks like. Get reference in the form of photos and paintings. Make it look as it is, not some simplified construct.

I did a quick draw over of your image, maybe it shows something. I just redrew the gesture a bit (put more of a twist in the torso since that's how I imagine it would be). Then put some more realistic anatomy instead of your lumpy construct, and then slapped some quick values on it. I looked quickly at The Flagellation of Christ by Bouguereau, some pieces of the figures in that painting I found were helpful to this.

Ah, ok. That's what I thought but wanted to make sure. It's been one of my main focuses the past year or so, putting emotion and meaning into pieces without them getting all pretentious and 2deep4me. A lot of that is personal you know, putting what emotion you see/feel onto the canvas. Michelangelo absolutely did that well, that dude was obsessed with the feeling of a piece being right. For portraits I'd say Sargent and Rembrandt, especially Rembrandt's self portraits. I think Adolph Hiremy-Hirschl did it pretty well too, pic related, but a lot of this is down to personal preference. Others like Jama and Zhanglu come to mind for me but it's mainly down to you and what paintings make you feel stuff. Art history book is a good thing to look at, also wander round museums/galleries and look at blogs like Gurney's maybe. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Anon, your repaint looks gorgeous.
>even the sword looks better
So if I understand it correctly, I should focus more on the long studies...
I currently warm up with quickposes.com, then do quickies from imagination. Should I rather change the quickies approach (painting with value instead of using lines, or do them with a brushpen or so?), or just scratch them out of my routine for the time being?

Sorry for asking questions like a fool. Because the grinding yields now results, I now wanna make I find the correct way to study.

And your repaint is going to sit on my desktop for inspiration purposes.

>> No.1693748

>>1693737
Thanks man! Glad you like it.

As for studies...I think like quick studies have their value, but so do long studies. How quick are quick? I don't think that much is learned from 30 seconds or 1 minute poses. As for painted vs lines...I am a painter by nature, I think in value and shape, and don't actually create images like I laid out there. But if I run into problems, the best way to solve them is to use line. I think I am unbalanced actually and need to focus more on line to get my draftsmanship stronger. For foreshortening though I think of the limbs as cylinders.

The point I was trying to make though is that you need to analyze more what the actual forms are. Look at the original painting...his abs don't look anything like what abs actually look like! They look like how Bridgman lays out abs, but he isn't saying to literally draw them that way. He is saying to think of them as that simple way, if you can't understand their forms. But when you move on to the final image, you need to be able to draw it as it exists in life, not just render out the simplified construct.

The thing you want to always avoid is the "grinding" as you put it. That implies just brute force. If you aren't thinking, you aren't improving. So if you want to get better at poses, maybe grinding gesture isn't the solution. Instead think through the motion of the figure, how would he distribute his weight? How would he twist? where do his limbs sit in space?

I dunno, for years I just did the grinding of studies, but I found I stagnated, and only recently have I actually abandoned studies and I have found myself improving. Now I take in information without actually copying it. I will have reference open on the side and analyze it as I paint. I will look at how materials in the reference react to light, I will look at colour, etc. And I integrate that into my painting without copying directly. I think this more analytical approach is better than doing lots of studies.

You asked for honest feedback, and you asked how shit it was. I gave my honest opinion.

I wasn't accusing you of tracing, I was saying that the way the lines were applied it looked as though it were a shitty tracing. The lines were all shakey and done in one go just following outlines. You did some rookie moves like drawing a hard lines all the way around the lips.

Take more time, take more care, and analyze more. Take a look at how professional artists use line. Where do they put line? Where do they leave it out? Where do they keep it light vs dark, thin vs thick?

I would rework the proportions. Right now his legs are very short even by regular proportions, and since he is a runner you probably want to give him larger/longer legs than normal. I'd exaggerate the S curve gesture of the legs more too. Why is his close arm and shoulder so big? There's no real reason for that.

The exposed pseudomuscles in the legs could also be made more interesting. Try varying their shape and size, and also take a look at the real muscles there to see direction better.

Values are also a bit washed out overall.

use the smudge tool, you need a brush set up for it though, here's my brushes http://www.mediafire.com/download/xd65npj5bd7al3g/mon_brushes.abr

it's called 'blender brush' you use it in the smudge tool, set it to something low like 12% and because it uses scatter it should actually be smaller than it looks like it should be. you just run it along the edge of two values you want to smooth out. there are nuances and different degrees of edge you can get but you can work that out yourself.

sorry i have to give you all my other crappy brushes as well, i don't know how to do just one.

You don't really want to use smudge tool. The best part about painting is throwing in colors on top of one another to see the relationships and how they blend. If you use the smudge tool you'll only be blending what's currently on the canvas, and personally, I think that artificial smudge effect looks pretty ugly.

>>1693817
I'd say either lower the opacity and use a soft brush or use a standard round brush with only the transfer settings enabled and spacing at about 5%. Eye dropper is useful for blending in those intermediate colors/shades too. Keep at it.

Drop in the background first next time so you don't end up having so much trouble with the values. Also for the next photo-referenced drawing you do, do it upside down. It'll give you a massive headache for the first hour or so but once you finish and flip it you'll be surprised how much closer it is to the photo than if you did it upright,

Also go back to the sticky and search for drawing on the right side of the brain.

Just read the insider leaks from a lot of studios posted in videogame websites, bad art direction can destroy the work of years of the art department. Drawing to please others can be a nightmare

I have a question, i hear some people say that when comes to drawing, there just is a hubble you need to get over, which is the most hard, frustrating and boring part of learning how to draw. And after that, it becomes fun, intresting and relaxing to do.
Is this true? I have read the sticky, and i am going through it still.

>> No.1695556

>>1695514
Not true in the way you're thinking of it. Becoming good at art and practicing a lot will be incredibly frustrating at first. In time you will master the basics and things will actually come a lot easier. However as you get better your expectations of your art will rise with your growth, the pressure to become better will never really stop and you will constantly push your limits. And you can't exactly relax while doing that.

BUT if you should ever reach a high enough plateau (and I'm talking about the Paul Bonner/NoxIzMad kind) painting will become much more natural to you and you will almost be able to paint on autopilot.

But if you just draw or paint for yourself, without having to worry about showing your work to anyone, painting and drawing can be really fun and relaxing once you're somewhat good.
