This is very, very good. I would suggest you paint this on a canvas. The farthest trees could have less color to them to make them seem further away and also put more focus on the guy.
Beside the composition and execution I think this is very interesting because the guy has very good hair air a nice clean shirt, so he's not the kind of person you would find hanging around the woods. He is clearly very troubled yet not sweaty enough to have been burying his wife in the woods.

It would be nice to have a bit more definition on the shoes, they could either be very nice shoes or maybe he could be contrastingly barefoot.

I would hang this picture on my wall any day

It'd help if you included your ref, but your values are borked. Forms are broken, especially her far cheek and her lips. Flip the image if you don't see it.

Consider simplifying the number of values in use. The section on value is related, but I'd give the whole thing a read:

You've made her value jumps within her skin too extreme. Pay more attention to what's similar than what's different. Try to make everything cohesive and easy to read with as few values as possible.

And keep in mind that your ref isn't ideal. Frontal lighting (like from a camera flash) has a very flattening effect, and make it very difficult to paint forms unless you're already proficient enough to extract useful information.

You've skewed her face a bit, making her proportions seem wonky. Your values aren't very cohesive - you've darkened the far cheek that's closest to the light source. Visualize the overall forms of the head and emphasize those with your value and edge control.

You've also made the cast shadows from her eye and nose harder than they need to be. Though those are hard edges, they should still be softer than the edge between the edge of her cheek and her hair on our right side.

They're one of the hardest things to draw well. We have specialized regions in our brain just for recognizing faces, meaning if something is a little bit off it will stand out.

I get that you're trying but, I still don't think your art is very attractive. Your faces are very ugly. You're putting these stylized anime eyes, with a poorly painted face, with a super realistic, highly referenced body. It also helps to note that your hair is EVERYWHERE and doesn't make any sense, which may be due to that fact that you're still clinging to your anime style.

tl;dr please work on your faces and hair.

Give it the old flip, and hopefully you'll see a lot of problems with the structure of pretty much everything. The perspective is pretty out of whack, and it's not being executed well. Without a doubt, the most glaring issue is the head + hat. The structure behind the figure looks very non-believable and poorly constructed.

i think you (like most people) start to see the subject as just tones and volumes and such while you're working, this is good in it's way. but sometimes you have to step back and regard the woman and your drawing of the woman, when you do that you're more lightly to see certain types of errors. instead of thinking to yourself 'is this the right shape?' you instead think, 'does this look like her eyes?' and you say 'no she has big dark round eyes' and you look for where your picture differs and go to fix it.

hope that helps.

At your current level, I'd argue for the opposite: instead of asking 'does this look like her eyes', ask 'are these shapes correct'.

When you're starting out, it's important to be able to observe carefully, and recreate that accurately. Once you can do that reasonably well, you can move on to questions of a person's likeness, and how forms and light are interacting in 3D space. That plan is shape recognition and recreation > perspective and basic forms > construction of complex forms.

Ideally, you'd want to define all of your largest shapes first. Simplify your values, and turn curves into line segments for better accuracy. Once you have the big shapes correct, refine within them to get the slightly smaller shapes correct. Once those are right, refine the even smaller shapes. Once you've done a few iterations of that, you simply smooth out what needs to be a curve, and soften edges where needed, then you suddenly have something that matches your reference. It's a great exercise to get you to think from big to small, general to specific. If any of your bigger shapes are off, then it doesn't matter how well you handle the smaller shapes - everything will be off.

I've attached a super quick mock-up that's similar to the exercise I described. It's far from perfect, since it's just the cutout filter, and all the decisions were defined by the computer instead of by hand. If you have trouble doing the above exercise on your own, you could follow each of these steps for a few photo studies until you're able to try it on your own. You'd basically copy the first frame until you've recreated it exactly. Then, using your same painting, change your reference to the second frame, and make your painting look exactly that that second frame. Keep moving forward until you've arrived at the original photo as your reference. At the end, you'll have one finished painting that matches the original ref.

>> No.1689619

>>1689601
>>1689615
I should probably note that if you choose to do the exercise, you don't need to go through as many steps as I've shown in the attached image. I'd skip frame 1 and frame 4 entirely, since you really need only 3-4 steps to define big shapes, work down to smaller shapes, then final details and polish.

>> No.1689637

>>1689615
the stepping back and observing the subject as what it is isn't about an arty idea like capturing essence or even likeness. it just causes you to see the image in a new light and as a whole. it's much like flipping the canvas. only it causes you to see errors even more clearly because it gets your brain out of abstract elements for a moment.

it's a tip for checking your work not a whole methodology or anything. you'd still paint the picture the usual way.

Alright so I'm trying to stand back and look at this as an image that shows how I color, how I draw lines, how I approach stuff in general and I'm trying to gleam every tiny wrong bit about it so I can try to remove those things from future stuff. I'm trying to critique it myself.
One, its a wonky face, its pretty dopey but I don't do anime stuff ever so I'm not torn up about it.
But as far as actual coloring technique goes its pretty smeary, soft and shitty airbrushy at parts. I think the skin tones look alright but maybe they're too simple.
The lines just generally look subpar, inconsistent weight, pretty wobbly at parts.

If you have any sort of critique on this, mainly with coloring and lines, please let me know. Maybe suggestions for alternatives to abusing overlay and luminosity layers or anything, I just really want this shit to get laid out and have every problem in the light.

those pictures show me that you are running out of time or you are rushing. You are completely skipping the big shapes and relationships. And everything about your brushwork is hasty. If you can just imply shape, you don't need to worry about background details. Get the figures right, make sure everything is aligned properly. Don't worry about color dropping/picking. Work monochromatic until you pick up speed.

I might recommend that you pick up a pad of newsprint and work with a fat piece of charcoal or conte.

I posted a picture a few days ago of some beautiful model and some anons helped me with 2 red lines, which ultimately were very kind. My goal is to get closer and closer to a likeness and I feel I've made some progress toward that. It was much more difficult than to just drawing it straight up. You guys were very helpful in the process. So I want to thank you guys.

so you either use a grid system or you trace, because you don't get that close to the original, in the exact same file size no less, without a grid or tracing unless you know your fundys, and you don't.

stop showing those pictures, they're not very useful for painters. they make it seem like colour is some kind of confusing thing and you need to be able to see through these illusions. all you need to do is be able to match a colour to the colours around it. you can tell if something is the wrong temperature or the wrong value or hue, you can even see if some kind of weird field effect is going on, then you change it, it matters not at all if it ends up being grey or not. there is no 'color that you're actually perceiving in the reference' there is only the difference between one colour and another.

It can help if used infrequently as an exercise, but most amateurs don't know how to learn from tracing and it instead hinders their progress. There are much better exercises to learn how to observe accurately and to translate that to paper.

>it's art, everyone does it differently
Nobody fucking cares if something is art or not. This board is about learning.

>> No.1690650

>the lines are traced but I am trying to get criticism on my painting. Colors are no trace, those are freehand
If you're trying to learn to paint, you're going about it wrong. It's not like filling in a coloring book where the lines are done for you. You need to develop a strong understanding of how light works.

You shouldn't try to paint in color until you can paint in value very well. And you shouldn't try to learn how to paint value until you can draw well. Going against that natural progression only hinders yourself.

>> No.1690652

The picture is very useful for people starting out, because they don't yet understand how color is relative. The point is to demonstrate to people how the mindset that 'skin is peach', 'apples are red', 'eggs are white', etc is the wrong mindset when thinking about color.

where you put the chin in the top study is offset to the right for some reason. move it over to the left so the chin is actually centered over the centerline you drew you in.

On the bottom one you made the face too round, look at the left corner of the mouth, look at the bottom left of the curve of the cheek and jaw that's below it in your reference. then compare it with your drawing you should see that where you have a curve it in fact straightens out a bit then curves again.

For starters you're making the irises too large, your values are muddy, and you have no specular reflections.

Pay attention to shapes, colors, and edges. Do plenty of master copies from great portrait artists.
