often people have anxiety about finishing a painting, people don't know when to stop. usually when you hear people say 'an artwork is never done' it refers to that sensation of wanting to overwork and it reminds you that you'll never be fully convinced that a little touch here or there won't improve it, so you should stop now, otherwise you could be there forever.

seems like anon was just joking around.

you are not drawing what you see, you're drawing the symbols that you think you see.
instead of drawing a very small eye (which is at most three lines shaped roughly like a triangle) you're drawing a very big "eye" that looks pretty animu and gigantic.

pay more attention to what actually is present. at your level, take images and trace over on another layer, then hide the ref. this exercise will give you a better idea of facial feature relationships.

I drew a picture for you all of a naughty tentacle sailboat.
So I decided I would just draw my little-man in the boat too.
Ain't no shame in paddlin' yer boat right? 'Coase a paddlin' might be going a bit overboard.

However the case this little sailboat just didn't seem to be going in the right direction. And well the captain of The Clam Pearl decided to be a little stern with the stern there. It's the best way to get to the hull problem. And besides paddling in circles is an either oar proposition. This little beauty on the sea is made of canvas and wood simply because making a boat out of stone would be a hardship.
This nice Sailor isn't much for vegetables so it's safe to say he's never taken on a leek. But perhaps when he becomes one of them Old pirates, and retire he'll grow corn for a buck an ear.
After all, a leak in the back of a boat is Constitution for a stern warning.

Aside from paddlin' his naughty sail boat I'm sure this Sailor would love to be paddling the pink canoe. It certainly sounds like a ship load of fun to me!
As a young sailor m' self, I thought I painted all of the waves just swell. So when your out their sailing about remember what the good old book said.

'An aye for an aye and a toot for a toot?'

this is some recent sketchbook work.

I like my stuff but I feel I need to work on caricaturing with more specificity... I look at animators in the industry and their sketchbook work always has more distinctive character. at the same time I always hear not to force a style though. So I feel split on that most of the time.

>>1684341
this looks cool but you need to work on a real 3d understanding of the form. It feels a bit forced. and the form could be better shown in the nose, for example, and the way the lip is cut off by the face contour flattens the image. little things like that. the skull shape seems a bit off too.

>>1684393
It does matter. it doesn't have to be very clean, but a chicken scratchy line will not bode well for your gesture or a good understanding of your form.

>>1684416
these are cool colors! maybe a better consistency with your brush stroke would help. you have a really clear following of the form on the table/ceiling which is a bit odd when you see how the face of the girl is blocked in in a straight on way.

cool, check the logic of the pose though, his left arm especially seems a bit awkward. i would give his head a more dramatic tilt as well. he looks kind of lazy.

>>1684453
the rendering looks too chrome. you aren't really sculpting out the anatomy as well as you could to give better definition at key areas like maybe the knees or showing the elbow articulation. also check the way you modeled the right quad, it is off. more reflective light in the shadows would help this feel more atmospheric.

>>1684459
this is cool but i can tell you aren't understanding very well what you copy. it's more beneficial to see the simplified anatomy in perspective than to copy a loomis diagram. check out hampton's figure drawing book, i feel it would help you more.

>>1684479
this is pretty nice but two things bother me: the sleeves (?) i cant tell what material they are and the look quite flat. and the gesture: the line of action is straight on vertical which is odd if he's a skeletal soldier. try to get some drama and leading lines into it. the tilt of the skull is cool.

>>1684502
don't copy pictures, learn what makes up what you see in the pictures and build on that. so you can exaggerate what you know is flattened out in photos and manipulate reference for drama.

>>1684553
you're not gaining anything from that rendering, do some perspective-based hand studies, simplify it into a wedge maybe.

>>1684564
cool, id have the red light diffuse more into the snow and shift the composition so the figure is more towards the right.

wow this is pretty. i agree the framing you achieve with the rock is cool but its straight vertical edge looks too unnatural. i also think the black in the foreground is too black. i would throw in some reflection and lighten it up a bit since it doesn't seem like a dark/edgy scene.

>>1684647

>>1684692
you should learn more form itll help and also learn some color theory. the palette isnt harmonious.

>>1684694

>>1684705
composition is too central, the background is too flat and faded out actually so it reduces my depth perception

>>1684721
good placement of forms. yes the left ear is a bit high. make sure your rendering does justice to the linework though. it's not done but i see your hatching is ignoring some of the structure underneath the face and if you emphasized that a bit it would be a beter piece.

>>1684729
not bad, avoid that straight up and down line of action though most of the time.

>>1684738
try moving the figure more towards the rule of thirds spot, itll probably improve the feel

>>1684771
this is a cool painting. im not good with this stuff but imo there should be less detailing on those farther away forms, or at leas tmore in the foreground.

>>1684852
honestly from this i can tell you're not as competent in life drawing as you think. you need more of an understanding of form to really caricature well (something strongly emphasized in my animation program). it's not working because you dont know the forms well enough to exaggerate them in an appealing way.

as for your piece, make sure you think about how the eyes fit into the sockets because his right eye is set deeply inside while his left isn't

>>1685257
Actually, everything besides the head should be a lot larger. Exaggerated heads are fine but here it looks detached because it's overdone. make sure when you render you really build up the form and create cool shadow areas. There isn't a feeling of solidity because the rendering is too flat. The expression is pretty good though, although think more about squash and stretch with the cheek masses and think about posing each eyebrow differently for more feeling.

It's a complete after thought. That texture is literally wallpapered on. The clouds or dust are merely airbrushed into the back. Surely you could have put some more thought into it before hand. Really you wanted to draw Natasha or Lara Croft, which is fine! You just aren't fooling us when it comes to that boring background you decided to add.

But what's really bothering me more than that is a few structural problems. Did you look at any reference? You drew a profile of a foot which hides that you cannot draw a foot in perspective at that particular angle. So her right foot also appears to be toppling toward us. No weight in the feet, she's just putting maybe 5lbs of her weight into that pose.

When I move up to the left of her waist, there is some strange rendering choices. It appears flat like the hips on a mannequin, and her belt wraps around as if her hips were a cylinder, but good thing you rendered the lips of her pussy before you took care of that. I don't believe her hands are holding that gun. The gun was an after thought. The head, I don't agree with some of the rendering you did, her face is pillowy(fat and softly rendered) The structure of the jaw, the small features of the mouth and nose and ears should be revisited. And her hair is a wig with gradient anime shit going on, come on son.

There appears to be a few, very subtle, inconsistencies with the body. As if you drew random portions of her body at different points of view, some are worm's eye and some at a small child or animal's view. Kind of like fun house mirrors in effect. So your rendering suggests "below" but structurally everything appears head on.

Your main problem is that you didn't design the picture as a whole. Say you redesigned this, even if you still had structural problems, it would look 10 times better and more believable. You painted a cheesecake picture of Natasha Croft.

As for positives, you can render ok, and I think you can draw better than this.

>It's a complete after thought.
1. No, it isn't. I saw Black Widow over a concrete wall and some smoke behind.

> That texture is literally wallpapered on
2. Yeah, what were you expecing? it's a comic style drawing, not arealistic one.

>The clouds or dust are merely airbrushed into the back.
3. That was the idea. To keep it simple. What were you waiting son, a view of the city in the background?

>Surely you could have put some more thought into it before hand.

4. Read first point.

>Really you wanted to draw Natasha or Lara Croft
5. Like if the characters from marvel look alike between artists. Come on, read the name of the rose. Black Widow use that hairstyle.

> You just aren't fooling us when it comes to that boring background you decided to add.

6. Read point 3. Besides, the sketches are posted here too. Since the begining anon.

>Did you look at any reference?
7. I used pic related, but wanted a more agile pose for her so i made her like that, both legs spread showing her nice pussy.

> You drew a profile of a foot which hides that you cannot draw a foot in perspective at that particular angle.
8. More like the way i painted it in here. Looks flat but i have to admit i decide the line for the wall later on the sketch so it don't look correct. besides that, the foot don't appear completely.

>It appears flat like the hips on a mannequin, and her belt wraps around as if her hips were a cylinder
9. Good point on the leg, don't know the rest.

>but good thing you rendered the lips of her pussy before you took care of that
10. I did it later on. And i like lips and pussy, so?
>The gun was an after thought.
11. No, it wasn't. You pretend to know but you don´t know much as you think.

>Her face is pillowy(fat and softly rendered)
12. Of course, it's a comic character, not a real person.

Continuing.

>The structure of the jaw, the small features of the mouth and nose and ears should be revisited.

13. Good point.

>And her hair is a wig with gradient anime shit going on, come on son.
14. Yeah, i admit it, one of the reasons why i'm here, don't you think mister genious? you implying i shouldn´t have these flaws is ridiculous.

>So your rendering suggests "below" but structurally everything appears head on
15. Again, i added the wall later on the sketch so yeah, it makes a weird effect i admit it.

>Your main problem is that you didn't design the picture as a whole.
16. What do you mean? I don't have a picture of a person in the same exact pose for any of the drawings i make.

>You painted a cheesecake picture of Natasha Croft
17. But anyway, it's good enough.

>As for positives, you can render ok, and I think you can draw better than this.
18. Of course, we are agree on this one.

Thanks for the feedback, though i would revisit the way you make critiques. I would start by stoping trying to look like a genius that knows everything, and being more humble, after all, you are here just talking and not showing anything, and talking is cheap, me? no anon, i broke my ass drawing this and i love it. But you are not fooling me anon, you just wanted the attention in your interes of destroying but not helping. Lucky for you, i always give an answer.

you should look at books about anatomy because by the looks of it, you're just drawing what you see on the outside and essentially just outlining (which is bad). Drawing is SO MUCH more than that. You need to have better understanding of your subject matter before you engage in it.

I disagree about the chicken scratch hating. When sketching out an idea like this and figuring out what you want to do, messy lines are just fine if that's what works for you. For a finished piece or if the linework is important, or perhaps for the next, cleaner layer, then flowing confident lines are important, yes. But for exploring your options and finding the forms initially, messier lines are fine, pic very much related.

I was going to crit the breasts for the earlier posts, they were hanging pretty weirdly, but the bra is a good idea. Try get the form of that just right though, needs to be pretty much flush with the form, and cupping them, not sitting on top or in front. Some pretty nice blending and edges in there though anon, be sure to post the final and/or a blog.

I dont see how anyone could fuck up with a ref. Its fucking stationary. Values dont change. It doesnt move. The answer is right in front of you.

Where the hell did you get this relationship of negative space? Thats completely wrong. You dont know whats behind the fucking onion so dont fucking draw it.

Get some common sense in you or else stop trying. Loomis cant even save you from shit relationships.

if you were just a little bit more precise about the shape and intensity of the highlights, both on the onion and on the cloth, the picture would gain a lot of naturalism. it's not much work for a lot of gain.

Use sharper shadows underneath the onion and near the frilly bits, also from the thumbnail you can see the left side of the cloth is off.

Also you could always try crossing your eyes and trying to combine the two images together like a 3d crosseye illusion. The fuzzier the result the more off you are, plus its hella trippy.

yes. for now you should. and take off pen pressure.

here's what can happen after you read this post and try it, feel like its impossible to work with and:

a) "fuck that retard anon, i bet his work is garbage i shouldnt listen to his advice" and you spend a long long time barely improving until years later you start painting opaquely on your own because you reached the point where you figured out its importance. you will have forgotten me by then.

b) "fuck this is hard as shit, but i'll stick with it for now" and you will improve dramatically, at a rate of about 400% compared to your improvement-rate had you kept painting with pen pressure. you will eventually think "holy shit that anon was right, it was absolute fucking agony starting out but i can see the importance of it now. i love you anon, i would suck your dick irl.

entirely your call bro.

Can you explain why painting opaquely > transfer painting? I mean when I paint with no transfer it's hard to blend and Id have to pick colours every few seconds. I see pros using transfer too, I just dont get why it's that bad. Id like to know why thanks.

>> No.1685920

>>1685914
Not the anon you were talking to, but painting opaquely is an exercise above all else. It forces you to make difficult, conscious decisions about shapes and color. Your edges won't be correct, but that's easy to fix if everything else is already in place. Think of it like learning how to do an accurate block-in where you model the forms correctly, after which you would proceed with the rendering.

Anon is implying that you shouldn't even worry about rendering for now at all - just get the right shapes and the right color. You can tell if you did it correctly if forms read super well when you zoom out or step away from the monitor.

>I see pros using transfer too, I just dont get why it's that bad
There isn't anything inherently 'bad' about transfer, and many means of blending depend on it. Keep in mind that many pros have very different workflows when working digitally, and that this is often reflected in the look of their pieces.

My suggestion is to copy the image over, make a new layer and trace over it with super basic shapes, literally a circle for the head and pelvis, and lines for everything else, don't rely on this technique but it'll give you a much much much better understanding of anatomy. As my lecturers have drilled into me for the past year learning anatomy is the key to getting things just right but that's boring and takes forever so learn the general line lengths etc. and your artwork will look better for it.

quick redline

so a is what you had
b is a redline fix of that, (you need to be more aware of your volumes, stop painting each thing as its own object and really think about how much of your figure would be eclipsing itself!)

C is what I think would improve it
Its a bad habit to crop at the knee and it makes characters look short the head is too large, and i didnt even see the back arm till I looked really hard for it. Counter the angle that you are giving your form with something dynamic?

>> No.1687865

>>1687022

Vilppu covers "volume modeling" in several of his newer lectures which come in extreme handy.

However, I learned general crosshatching via ctrl-paint: http://ctrlpaint.com/videos/crosshatching

The general rules to follow:

1. Consistency. Keeping your lines the exact same weight and keeping them a consistent width apart helps convey the illusion of value. Having varying line weight and widths just make crosshatching look like a bunch of lines.

2. Following form. Perhaps the most overlooked point by novices, following the form is what reinforces the look of 3D. You can crosshatch in almost any direction you'd like, so long as it is consistent and follows the form. The easiest way to do this at first if you are a beginner is to follow cross-contours of the form SLOWLY (speed comes later, after mastery) and then slowly erase away the lines you don't want as light. The lines you have left over is your area in shadow IE your crosshatch.

3. Plane changes. This is the last big thing, especially for box forms. When there is a shift in value on any object, the two areas are completely different planes. Crosshatching is a simplification of value just as planes are a simplification of complex volume. Learning when to simplify a volume and knowing when to use how heavy of a crosshatch to show a change in planes is mastery.

Loomis' Figure Drawing: FWIW has an entire chapter dedicated to the figure simplified to planes. If Loomis isn't your cup of tea, you can also use a desktop mannequin to help you see planes.

Hope all of this helps.
