Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"There must be a genuine basic motive behind any genuine effort. ...search quietly and thoroughly for this basic motive, because if it is powerful enough, it will give you the strength to withstand discouragement, disappointment, disillusionment, or even seeming failure." - Andrew Loomis

Previous Thread: >>1680426

A general message to aspiring artists: Fear is the mind killer. Do not be afraid to make mistakes as no one is perfect, you will make mistakes. Learn from those mistakes, break from your comfort zones and explore new horizons.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

For pretty anime girls usually the standard is to make the eyes bigger/more defined while making the nose and mouth smaller/less defined.

What you have is not too far from the anime approach, her eyes are definitely huge but I'd make the shadow on the nose lighter or nonexistent.
For the most part everything looks pretty well-placed, but the mouth and nose could be placed a tad more to the right.

I don't think I need to tell you this either since it's a wip but those edges are sucky.

I don't agree, especially about the values. The edges are a little bit rough, there are some MINOR mistakes in the drawing in terms of the proportions (chiefly in the hands, nose, left arm, thighs), but in terms of being a copy of a marble statue the lighting is obviously, purposefully studied. It might not be the greatest study in the world, but it's obviously not mindless copying.
>>1685212
It looks halfway decent, but the edges definitely need work, it's obviously just lasso-tooled. No one looks that clear cut. While you got the general value range correct and it reads well in the thumbnail, your brushstrokes are extremely unappealing and would benefit from work. What I mean is the very airbrushed look of something like the hand makes it look flat and boring.

Super sloppy character design. Outfit is WTF on purpose, I swear. Main thing I need help with is color theory, I know super basic BS like red opposites blue ( warm, cold). You know, the obvious stuff you can find in the obvious places.

So I'm just asking for pointers on coloring I guess. How's the best way to learn. I know you have to start with shading shapes in Greyscale

You need to get some proper knowledge and theory down for this before you start doing it.
Right now you don't understand how lighting is affected by different surfaces and why some
shadows look different than others, hard shadows, soft shadows etc and you seem to think
that coloring is simply going from light to dark on a single hue, so you just blend
everything to oblivion. Get The Gnomon Workshop - Anatomy Workshop Volume Two
It explains basic coloring/rendering theory in a pretty simple to understand way.

Don't worry too much about not understanding colours and such yet, that'll come with time, practice, and studying, especially studying. Check out paintings by JJ, Sargent, etc (pic related) and see how the shadows of things aren't just black, or just lower values of the base colour. Shadows can be cool or warm, have light within them, take bounced colours from the sky or the ground, all sorts of things. Colour and Light will help teach you about those things, but for now, don't shade with black like that, it muddies your painting too much. Keep at it, you're learning with each piece anon.

Not nearly enough, and you've made each tooth practically the size of his eyeball. Construct the skull first. Pay attention to the eye socket, cheekbone and the tooth cylinder. Feel free to exaggerate where needed, but only a little. Build the face on top of that construct, paying attention to how the mouth wraps around the tooth cylinder.

I'd check out a bunch of frames from the New 52 Joker. Some of the drawings do a decent job of showing a stretched open mouth across the skull. Don't forget the major planes caused by the muscles when smiling.

And because I was bored, here's a visual demonstration of the magic of construction. Mind that I did a fairly mediocre job, but the point of construction and having a skull to start things off should be clear.

Your construction doesn't have to be based directly on the skull, but it's useful when drawing distorted expressions, monsters, etc. Recognize what level of anatomical framework would be useful for your construction, then have at it.

I also made this one. Didn't want to move on to the lines for the Rikku drawing so i made this one while i waited for a response. I would love people here help me to get some ideas to make a sexy new suit for this Rogue drawing. I made my own redesign but it's kind of simple. I don't know, maybe i could get new ideas to make it hotter. Of course any other constructive critiques about it will be very welcome, loved the way my last drawing turned out with other people's help on the lines and colors.

In general, please let me know.

Drawing from imagination is frustrating me a lot right now, and it feels like most of the time I am trying to remember how someone looked like rather than "invent" shapes and it also feels like I am looking for my comfort zone so I can draw it in 3/4 view or something I drew before.

I'm about to throw in the towel how do you guys go at it, do you build a visual library and just study something from all angles in perspective and memorize?

Well pic related, the best I can do from imagination right now.

>do you build a visual library and just study something from all angles in perspective and memorize?
Not quite. You really only need to learn the general proportions and basic forms of things and extrapolate from there. And you don't necessarily need to see something from a certain angle before you can draw it from that angle. You can infer a lot from just the orthographic views.

Say you wanted to draw a giraffe head: If you were provided with the front and side view (and optimally the top and bottom view), you should be able to construct that giraffe head from any angle you want - you've already been provided with all the information you need. In the event you decided to draw a 3/4 low angle view of the giraffe head, you should be able to do a decent job of it (though everyone will do a better job if the reference already matched the exact vantage point they needed).

In the real world you'll seldom find 'spec sheets' of orthographic views for everything you want to draw, but the same principal of extrapolation applies for even non-ideal conditions. If you have difficulty with this, then chances are you don't quite understand perspective well enough, and you don't know how to construct complex forms from basic forms well enough. You should be able to mentally visualize and rotate an object in a similar way to a 3D program would. You should be drawing and painting a bunch from life to fully internalize how to think in 3D space - it's not really a skill you can pick up if you only study from 2D sources.

If you're drawing animu heads, construct them from a box first so that you have a clearly defined front, back, top, bottom and sides. If certain angles give you difficulty, then study more real heads, and try sculpting real and anime heads - paying attention to major planes and proportions. At the very least, you'll now have a maquette that you can use as a reference.

The way I see it, it's much easier to dial it back than to go-too-far. If you start too light, you'll be inching to increase contrast. But if you go too dark to begin with, you'll at least have some strongly defined shapes and it's easier to just pull it back.

Also, work in B&W just a little bit. Hue is hard when you can't ace value.

Trying to imitate an art style right now but my understanding of form is giving me a bit of trouble right now.
Are there ways to get a better grasp of how things interact? Like for instance how stiff hair acts when someone turns quickly or how clothing acts when its form fitting and then goes loose at certain places?

I've been trying to make observation studies but they haven't given me the answers I'm looking for.

You should be drawing for fun, especially if you suck, since you'll be the only one to appreciate it at that point.

Drawing for fun doesn't mean you're not learning, you'd have to be a pretty dull individual not to get that. (you in the general sense)

I think the hand that is clenched into a fist seems a little flat because of the angle; since she's coming toward the viewer (presumably to throw a punch), shouldn't her hand be curled a bit more forward such that we see more of the front of the fist?
