I know these kinds of questions tend to have broad answers but when drawing from life and applying perspective to your drawing, how good does your perspective sense have to be for it to be worth your time? I know the idea is to break things down into simpler forms whose perspective you can keep track of, but how do you get a solid foundation of perfectly accurate pers pective when everything in life is so complicated looking? I feel like you'd need to just draw imaginary shapes in perspective first but I also feel you'd learn most naturally from drawing from life.

Why is cartooning disregarded by most of /ic/?

You need to use whatever tools you have at hand to produce what you want to do. Breaking things down to simpler forms is one of the ways to do it, but if you stop yourself at any method, you'll have problems. Forget a bit about that and try another way. The most important thing is to look at things with attention. If you are facing a complicated cityscape, chances are you won't be using perspective lines. Try another way, try drawing building per building, draw the shapes you see as they appear to you. Don't be hesitant to drop the methodic planning, reality always comes first.

All that you draw is, in a way, a reflection of how you feel. Try to move away from images which are already "digested" hundreds of times. We are all surrounded by pictures that evoke others, that evoke others. Movie icons, ads, etc. Look at different things, from unusual backgrounds, old, weird aesthetics. And always practice drawing directly from real life. Your feelings come through your drawing.

Did you draw it upside down?

The Stravinsky by Picasso was done with Picasso upside down, drawing upside down while he looked at Igor on his chair. The drawing has been made famous for didatic purposes, so that people would reproduce this experiment.

The idea in doing so is to forget that what you see is a person, an eye, cloth, etc. Forget the concepts you have of those things and see what is there as lines, angles, volumes, weight and so on. What I see in your drawing is a persistence of the visual symbols we normally have. Evidence for this are the arm as a "tube" without foreshortening, the round head, the eyes closer to the top of the head, the round shoulders, etc. It's natural that you draw it like that, it is engraved in your head and you must unlearn those shapes in order to reproduce things more accurately. Try doing it again upside down, even hide parts of the image if you want, focus on the lines. Or even better, lie on a couch upside down and draw your room, forgetting that it is a room, seeing just shapes. What could also help is to look at the negative spaces, the shapes in between the things.

How do I draw shapes and forms? I've sat down for hours trying to draw cubes and everything is all lopsided and quite frankly, shit.

Don't get me started on spheres and cylinders. I feel like this is a crucial issue I can't seem to get past in order to get better.

I guess a better question would be "How do I draw/simulate 3D?".

>> No.1679709

>>1679689
lol it's okay, don't be sad about it. This resistance is hard to break through, in a way, we never truly break through from it. My point is that, even though you did it upside down, you were still paying attention to "so this is the head... and now the shoulders..." even unconsciously. Try to see things free from judgement and keep practicing. Don't get hung up on one drawing, don't even look at it that much, move on to the next and next. And enjoy yourself while doing so.

Simple one point, two point, three point perspective exercises can get you through that plateau. If you aren't doing them already. Draw the horizon, one point and make things converge from there, there are tons of resources to provide examples. One of the things that I usually see as being troublesome to some people is that they don't know where to start. Say you are drawing a cube facing you on one point perspective, you should start with a square. the squared face that is closer to you and then you "pull" that square towards the point. If you're doing it in two point perspective, start with just the line that is closer to you and pull the cube from it again.

Like with the other anon, the resistance comes from thinking a cube flattened out on the plane should be made of squares, you should notice trapezoid figures in the perspective exercises. In real life, they are "never" squares, it is the combination of forms that provide us with the sensation that each side is equal. The "crucial issue" is that resistance to see things as they appear. It's normal.

cont

>> No.1679712

>>1679710 cont
Another thing that could help is to paint them flat, at first. For example, draw a lot of cubes and then fill all the right sides with black and up sides with a shade of grey. This should make things easier to see. Then you could progress onto studying proper shadows with value exercises.

Spheres are just circles, no matter where you look them from, it is the shadow that make us see them as spheres. Cylinders on perspective, like the squares, will not be shaped like circles, for a circle in perspective turns to an oval. A good exercise is to make a squared block and then "carve" the cylinder from it.

Be patient.

Could someone out there recomend me some tools or small sculptures i can buy ti improve my anatomy a bit?

I feel like either going with an Asaro head, or an anatomy tools skull. but I'm wondering if i should save up and even buy a complete torso. Maybe even a full body to scale. Male or female? Or even a simple Bargue cast? There's a LOT of choices to pick from. I mostly want to improve my life drawing, but if I can also improve my anatomical knowledge in the process, that would be awesome.

Any thoughts?

You're obviously a beginner, but hey we all gotta start somewhere.

Take another look at how the lines relate to one another. For example, notice how his his shoulders and hands line up closer than your work suggests, or how much more space his forehead takes up. This exercise is all about considering spatial relationships and negative space. Don't get discouraged though! Studying what went wrong will allow you to see better.

Just keep practicing.

>> No.1679743

>>1679732
I think this is more of a matter of discipline than anything else. And by discipline I mean not doing what you immediately want, but working on something you want to do on a longer term. Sometimes we just keep drawing the same things over and over again, for they feel easy and light on our head. I think this is a sign that you are being too critical over what you draw. The too much information is a problem as well, forget about it for a moment and be in the moment of drawing, without trying this or that. I believe the best you can do is to progress from the doodling. itself Do you mindlessly draw these silly little faces? Then pick a big and good piece of paper and a nice pen, then fill the paper with these faces, exactly the ones you keep doing. This kind of thing awakens creativity. Assume what you draw and take it to the next level.

>>1679734
I personally think these things are useless and advise against them. They seem great, but then you'll notice they will just sit on your shelf for nothing. They can do no harm and look nice, of course, but I say this because they are usually expensive as hell. Best thing you can do to learn anatomy is to practice from real life models, or even people on the street. The knowledge you'll get from these statues is not much different from the knowledge you'd get from looking at a regular anatomy book that shows how muscles connect and so on.

and the temperature will effect the painting too, so if you want say a picture with warm light you'd use a cooler black for your underpainting so the shadows match up with the less opaque paint in the light.

there's two aspects, rhythm and balance, if something is entirely balanced it's difficult to give it rhythm (like trying to play a song with only one note) and the image comes off lifeless and motionless. on the flip side if there's no balance at all it comes off as chaotic.

if something has rhythm it also has a progression and people know where to look first, second, third etc. if not they don't know where to look , or they'll look at things in a different way than the artist intended and miss the point.

no, you don't need to know all that unless you're going to be a pretty serious figurative artist. there are plenty of other easier ways to break down a body when your just using it in a picture as long as you can draw the volume it doesn't really matter if you remember that's the shape is made by the space between the sternocleidomastoid and the sternohyoid or w.e. just as long as you remember to draw it.

really you should learn as you go alone, you might notice that your shoulders in drawings look weird so you see how they're attached to the torso and you fix it.

as for breaking out of anime, drawing from life (or photos) is the main thing to do. and focusing on volume rather than shape. so not drawing a set of simplified eyes, but drawing eye-lids and eyeballs and the shape of the face around them.

It is if you can't draw smooth lines traditionally.
>Is there no stabilization in Photoshop?
There technically is, but nothing like that found in SAI. AFAIK, it's more so that fast strokes aren't captured as a series of line segments instead of a curve.
>Should I have mine set to 0 in SAI?
Only if you want to improve your coordination when drawing digitally. I'd be more concerned with improving linework traditionally and have that skill set carry over to digital. Seeing as no tablet+program can fully capture the level of coordination and control possible with traditional media, I wouldn't worry too much about having a stabilizer set to 0.

Remember in the end there's no rules, only tools. As long as you're not cheating yourself out of a learning experience, I wouldn't worry about it.

Watercolors is a lag fest, my machine is an i5 with 6gb of ram isn't big deal but these specs work well with SAI and PS.

I wish there was a way, to remove the textured background or change them to another texture without affecting what you've drawn so far.

Supplies will have the best longevity depending on what you buy. Books and drafting materials will last your entire life. Sketching pads a few weeks to a few months, and supplies, depending on usage about a month. The slate will be obsolete in 2 years, and you'll probably find it's more convenient to carry a sketchbook instead. You can probably attend uninstructed art student league classes everyday. I believe it's $12 for a 4 hour session. Which is an AMAZING rate. However transportation in a single day in NY can run you 10-20$.

My opinion is to buy some good drafting supplies maybe some props for drawing a still life, and try to find some local life drawing classes. And anon, you'll need a part time job.

I've been impressed by the work of graduates as well as self-taught artists. You're just being biased at this point. Also some artists want to work outside of digital illustration, and would benefit from the access to metal and stone sculpting, lithography, etc. A degree doesn't mean someone's art is going to be good, but it sure doesn't hurt.

Learn to draw simple shapes (cube, etc) in perspective. 3/4, from below, etc. 2-point perspective is a start.

Then, come back to the human body.
Now, simplify the body as different shapes. Of course it's a bit more complicated than that : head isn't purely round, your arms aren't perfect cylinders...
But for now, start with perspective of simple forms.
By the way, take a look at Proko's video on Youtube.

Yes. Everything else will come logically to you after that. You'll start drawing very simple forms of people (really, do mannequins first, such simplified stuff. In fact, if you don't already know the term gesture and your drawings are stiff too, check it, Proko explains it too), then when you'll start to feel ok with perspective, you'll ask yourself : why does my drawing still looks like shit? That will be because you don't know human proportions. And after that anatomy. And values. Etc.
By the way, I separate those things but it's not really like you need to know each of those things 100% perfectly before starting to learn another. I don't think there's a real, unique method, you can and will obviously mix the learning of each of those fundamentals. Don't get stuck on one in fact, because you'll never get it perfectly in the beginning. Masters took their whole life learning, etc. So yeah, just try to get the basics.

I'm no pro at all, beginner myself, but I'm starting to understand and apply things more correctly. Hope this helps. (english is not my first language so sorry anything's not quite clear)

Oh and one last tip. Don't give up. Sounds stupid and obvious but it takes a lot of time and practice (fill pages and pages with the same thing you just learned. Don't spend too much time trying polishing it, if you get things right you can do it in fewer lines as possible) for some people to start to get things right.

How far do vanishing points have to be apart from each other?

I posted this image in a draw thread a while ago, and here they are clearly too close to each other.

Also, how do I know the distance between vanishing points for a new set of vanishing points (for example for the chairs that are out of perspective)? Are there any rules for this?

I can't for the live of me find a tutorial that covers multiple sets of vanishing points.

Well the answer is to use your intuitation to get a rough estimate of the angle, then extrapolating that into the 90 degree angle and finding the vanishing points that way.

there's no rule on how far vanishing point should be, it depends on
1. the object's angle
2. how much distortion you plan to use

with that said there can be infinite vanishing point that can be placed anywhere in a picture the reason people adhere to usually 1~3 pts is to arrange it as simple and readable picture.

1) there isn't a rule, but there are combinations that are common. Think about seeing objects from top. They from 90° angles: 75/15, 60/30, 45/45
2) If they're out of the cone of vision you can add distortion using 3 vanishing points
3) to find the vanishing point of any set of parallel lines use the top view and move one of the lines parallel until it interrsects the station point

ok so i have a couple of question

i consider myself a "noob" in drawing or painting but i do my best!

now to que question :

my routine for drawing is this : look a picture, photo, whatever i like -anime, persons, animals, or whatever- and i do a little draw on my sketchbook for saving for later, then i took any draw and start drawing it again and paiting it with some modification , this could be considered copy?

then, the other question is, i usually draw anime, persons, animals, that i see on internet, and do some OC sometimes, but, how i start to draw more of my mind?

how i create something new ?

the pic is an example of what is in "my mind"
can you give me some advices?

sorry if my questiosn are stupid

Is it much harder to paint with oils? Harder to fix mistakes? I find it intimidating. Should I start with a pencil sketch and paint over that?

>> No.1685831

>>1685829
It isn't much harder than acrylic, the biggest difference is drying time, plus oil tends to be more toxic. It just depends on your method as to which you'll prefer. There are mediums to slow down the drying time of acrylic and speed up the drying time of oil as well. Fixing mistakes is easy in oil, sometimes you just have to wait a day because the surface will be too wet. I usually start with either a sketch in colored pencil (graphite smears) or in acrylic. Most often I do a sketch of black line work in acrylic, then add an acrylic imprimatura over that, allowing my lines to show through a bit. Also remember that oil over acrylic is fine (though you probably don't want a very heavy acrylic underpainting), but acrylic over oil won't bind properly.

I went to Louvre a few days ago, there was a painting there that I was only able to glance at, so I couldn't see the author or the name of the painting. Basically it was of a man and a women. The women was nude, very pale and looked kind of vampiric and had something tangling between her legs, like a fetus? The man was next to her had a darker skintone than the woman and I think he had a pained expression. The background was pretty dark, I think it was night. It may or may not have been painted by a homosexual Brit. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Is it bad that I don't care about painting at all?

Drawing is something I really enjoy, but I don't feel the urge to start painting.
I like doing gesture drawings, I love using simple shapes to construct shit, I have a huge hard on for drawing things from imagination, I love some tight line work etc. Vilppu/Teal line guy type of shit basically.

I guess I'm more into the animator style approach to drawing, accept I don't really have the incentive to become an animator.
Am I missing some type of joy in my decision to ignore painting?

First off, read the sticky.

Your routine is okay as a part of drawing, but you should mix it up more. Draw from life, study with books, draw with a time limit, you gotta get out of your comfort zone.

Also, you have to think of your drawings as three dimensional objects. In the image you posted you clearly didn't do that. Life drawing is important for that.

As for creating something new... Just think of something and then try to draw it. Don't be afraid to do multiple sketches or to research or use references.
For example for your image which I presume is an eye on top of some sort of plant, I would try to draw it. Then I'd probably realize I don't know what kind of plant I want it to be, and I'd realize I have no idea what the backside of an eye ball looks like. So I'd go and research that, make a few sketches of every thing that causes problems and then try again.
If you're new to drawing you'll often have to do this: learn to draw specific elements of an image before you can draw the entire thing. Don't be afraid to do that. It takes a lot of time but it is necessary.
