how do I improve my imagination? it sounds stupid, but whenever I try putting together a drawing/doodle/whatever, I draw nothing but blanks. will it just come with my ability to draw different faces/situations? I feel silly.

Man, I feel you OP.

I feel so dead.

I've been blaming it on being depressed for the past year but what if I'm just innately unimaginative?

Fuck.

My method is going on no fap and walking outside and seeing people and stuff.
Or just pick up a new game briefly that you haven't played yet.

I dont think everyone can develope a rich imagination, but it's always a good thing to study the work of other artists. Study their compositions and stuff. Just look at them and try to find spaces or things in their pictures, where you start to ask yourself "How the hell did he come on the idea to draw this there?!" Just study their compositions and what they put all kinds of little details in them.

If you just want to learn anatomy and such stuff, then using a lot of references is a good way to find your "style". Just search photos you like and do your stuff with them. This is always a good practice.

The secret to creativity isn't just creating something from nothing. Try approaching your art with a problem in mind that must be solved. An example would be designing a creature that is a mix between two animals. How would it hunt, what would it's physiology need to be for survival. You can see that you most likely started coming up with ideas for this suggestion. If you approach it providing some sort of restriction or problem to solve you'll start finding you are way more creative than you think :D.

Im a total beginner but correct me if I'm wrong : creativity can't come jsut from your mind if you're doing nothing in your room. Either you have to go outside (where any little thing brings thoughts) or just watch anything graphic, so documentaries, movies, anything, which would expand your visual library. Or just make research on what you dig. You like heroic fantasy? Look for pictures references on armor. Like wrestling? Look fro wrestling matches videos, pause, stud. Etc.

Hi OP,

I would suggest expanding your 'visual library', by which I mean your collected visual references from which you draw inspiration.

I do not necessarily mean that you should save endless amounts of images (though having some folders with suitable images on a variety of things is helpful), but simply by looking at many different things. They will stick in your memory and you can mix and match them when trying to come up with something new.

Do not just look at pictures of other artists. It's like ingesting regurgitated food.

Get depressed.

Sad people tend to have a better imagination. Think about it. What could they be sad about in this amazing world?

They have a better world in mind. Their imagination surpasses the real world. Surpasses what reality has to offer.

I had thew same issue OP.

What helped me was reading books, in my case fanasty novels.
If you watch a movie or read a comic you see images that you'll remember and might be able to recreate, this will also grand you a larger imagination but in a way it's someone elses imagination.
When you read you imagine your own world/character/ect.
That way you create new things.
