Just make a viewfinder (you can even use your fingers) and play around with composition as much as you can, why does the feeling change when It's cropped like x.

Something to play around with is, while studying figure drawing you draw a box around each figure, now you can practice a thousand figures while practicing a thousand (or more!) compositions.

Edgar paynes book "composition of outdoor painting" is worth a look, though it might get restricting if you follow the advice too closely

The basic gist is to never have equal spaces

nice, you need something in the mid-ground between the people and the water for scale because of that kraken ship being soooo huge, it makes it hard to tell those other things are smaller boats. maybe it'd be less of an issue when the picture is more fully resolved idk.

I think it communicates the mood well, im very wary of the rim-light over-contrast aesthetic, BUT with that being said, ill make sure it doesnt become a habit, im being really careful for the time being, trying to figure out things from the middle, and then ending at lightest and darkest, so thats why there are no "extremes". and yeah, midground definitely, if i get back to this image ill keep in mind what you said. right now i need to start some new stuff or finish other stuff, just to get fresh eyes and such! but thanks!

It feels as almost you've drawn him from a slightly different angle. Just looking at the thumbnails, you can see the differences. The face seems smaller, more down than the reference. You should really work on your mapping. A good way to do that is to find where certain objects (and landmarks) are and see how it lines up with another landmark. pic related btw.

It is a bit hard to explain but, basically you can kinda tell where everything is just by seeing if it lines up. It works a bit better if you put a ruler or your stylus to the picture.

Take their advice - from setting aside this one as a thumbnail I'm sure you'll know what to watch out for now. Also, going from the second person, take it a step further. If you're doing a Sargent, do it just like he would have - Very. Slowly.

Looking at yours it feels like you were painting too quickly. Sargent would stand poised at his canvas, planning his next brushstroke, and only made it when he was absolutely certain that he felt it was the right thing to do. In the end, after a few more strokes, it turned out to be a poor judgment, he'd scrap it and start over. Also, work your larger shapes first - say all that you can with the largest shapes before moving on to anything else. It's a wonderful thing to spend so much time planning at first, taking painstaking efforts to make sure you've set your painting up for something wonderful, and then having it paint itself by the end.

Also, it's a Sargent. Hold yourself to his standard when you're painting it. Nothing wrong or misrepresented on your canvas, just as he would have done.

Bump with a finished sketch.

Their advice is solid. If you put this thumbnail aside and begin anew you'll also know what areas you had trouble with, which is valuable. Also, if you're doing a Sargent, do it like Sargent would have - Very. Slowly.

Sargent would only put down a brushstroke if he felt that he knew exactly where, and how to put it down. The tone and shapes need to be correct and you need to know why you're putting it there. He also began working in his largest masses first, with midtone. Take as much time as you need to set your painting up to be successful, do not move on from the largest shapes until they are perfect. Work large to small. Think about what Sargent was thinking, how he was working. All of his knowledge is there, distilled, and all you have to do is pay attention to pull it out.

Also hold yourself to a high standard when you're doing this - Sargent would throw away seemingly completed paintings if he didn't think it was working. I read somewhere that once he threw away more than 10 renditions of someone before making one he liked.

Also, finished sketch for bump.

Thanks. Also, I'd say you've run into the same problem as the person studying Sargent - you didn't plan out your piece and went on with it anyways. You have to set yourself up for lovely work.

Also, my advice would be to take this back to thumbnail, completely paint over and remove any detail you have so nothing in your painting is precious, then set it up graphically. I'd say set this on a dark grey background, fill the image mostly with black crows flocking all around, with white plate and a light grey face framed by black. Also take the time to consider your story and the mood, and see if your composition of abstract shapes supports it.

Also, another finished sketch.

Hey mate, decent start here, I feel you just need to add some more interest through variety.

Variety of saturation--everything is grey and desaturated, adding in a bright saturated red at the focal point breaks up your saturation structure a bit so it is more interesting.

Variety of material--the materials are all matte and boring, so I played up the metallic feel of the knight.

Variety of value--increased the contrast on the knight, and added in a brighter white for the flag.

Variety of texture--added some dead trees behind the knight to give some cool small noise that works well contrasted against his smooth metal.

Variety of depth cues--added some foreground branches, and another hill thing on the bottom left to make it feel more like a full world and not just like a flat hill randomly cut off.

I also added some more snow in the background to make some bigger more interesting shapes. And simplified the grass shape the knight is standing in since it has a lot of variations that I felt weren't helping. I feel some other areas can use some simplifications, but I don't want to spend mroe than a couple minutes on this overpaint, and I figure you can work at it a bit too :P

To be honest, I like the former better. Not everything needs to be blown out in terms of saturation or value. You learn to appreciate subtleties in paintings more after you've seen enough of them.

>suffers from a lack of variety, especially in the value and saturation hierarchies. I like the brushwork though and the edge control.

I'd disagree. I wouldn't say that there's a lack of it, but it is only more tastefully done. Again, it's takes more knowledge, skill, and even a certain degree of taste to pull back all that saturation and contrast while still having an interesting painting, rather than go all out with them.

I'm really frustrated with this painting. The colors are weird because the professor wanted us to pick something 'strange' and not have the same colors for each object. We also had to choose/mix based on adding two complementary colors together, no pure colors. Sorry I didn't take a picture of the still life. Can anybody give me any tips with acrylics or just.. anything? (Also, the drapes aren't even really drapes.. It actually is just some shitty blue plastic. )

What I found incredibly helpful for making the leap from reference to imagination was careful observation of forms in non-drawing situations. For example, when I was riding the subway I would look at the people and try to imagine how I would express their form through line or value, like I was wrapping it in contours (if that makes sense?). Then when I would sit down to draw, I had filled my head with those kinds of observations and it was munch easier because I could more clearly imagine the way structures behaved. I feel like drawing is the art of seeing, so the more often you carefully observe, the greater your draftsmanship will become.

Your art looks really familiar. Nevertheless, stop touching the contrast slider and she also has a massive beehive on her head. You really should work on making the picture a bit more solid and less 'sketchy' before adding all these glares and effects.

There are some anatomy mistakes here and there, around the nose and with the eye a bit. Use this as reference http://downloads.xdesktopwallpapers.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11-3/Side-Face-Of-Jessica-Alba.jpg

But, seriously, I pulled the image over to my other monitor which has higher contrast, just a tad bit and now the shadows are waaaaaaay too dark and other places are waaaay too bright.

It might all just come down to foundations or the colors you pick. How well do you do painting traditionally? Does it normally look the same? It might help you to step back from digital painting, so you won't feel so discouraged. Or if you can't right now, try some studies out so you can see exactly what you're doing wrong. >What is wrong with my usage of colours?
You clearly don't understand how color and light work.
http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm
http://www.huevaluechroma.com/
http://ctrlpaint.com/library/ (watch all the videos under 'Painting with Color')

What you need to be doing is a TON of painting from life to learn how color works in the real world. Painting shit from imagination won't help you at all if you don't have the prerequisite knowledge base, visual library, and intuition on how color works.

Paint well lit simple still lifes (apples, vases, eggs, whatever you have lying around the house). Paint the object and it's environment, not just the object. First do a bunch in grayscale, and show some restraint with pure white and pure black - they are extremes, and thus should be reserved for accents if used at all.

Next, paint a bunch of monochrome still lifes where you vary color temperature. If you're using real paints (which I recommend), your starting colors would be black, white, a cool red, and a warm red for example.

Once you have a feel for color temperature, slowly expand your working palette. Gamut mapping is relevant: http://pastebin.com/rQ2EVg4J . Once you're comfortable with that, paint some still lifes with a fuller color palette. At this point you should also go out and paint environment, paint some master copies, and paint from unedited photos.

I'ts not just your colors that are off, but your values and your depiction of form as well. If you can't do those prerequisites properly, then it doesn't matter how good your colors are - everything will still look wrong/off.

So I'm working on this and I realized my perspective is realllllllllly off. This is for a figure drawing class- I plan on making the tops of the walls true horizontals and redoing the book. I believe when this is finished it will have 6 figures total. Will it be too much? I plan on moving the current middle figure back so that the current three figures are not in the same plane to hopefully add more depth- The floor ends by the large columns in the back ground and the images vanishing point will continue out in to some out doorsy backgrounds. I need to represent Multipoint perspective, single point perspective and Atmospheric perspective. I plan on also using this work as a light logic study. Is there anything I could do to help improve the composition?

Yeah, pretty much just that. It keeps you from getting attached so you can just focus on rapid ideation, and also forces you to be a bit more deliberate with your composing ability. It's a good call to start something new, not being excited about a piece will kill it harder than about anything else.

>>1669496

Hey, thank you :]

I don't agree entirely with every change you've made, but I'm also a bit wary to be opposed to it out of defending myself, or out of the fact that your changes will not be as polished as what I had. Render can really influence those decisions in detrimental ways. I agree with how the flag doesn't pop out and about the helmet... tassle hair, though I'd solve them differently. Also the hill does feel like it cuts off a bit, doesn't it? It's more of a drawing issue, though.

>>1669500
>>1669638
>>1669641

I actually disagree, I enjoy being critiqued by about anyone. The thing you have to remember is the direction that you had intended the piece to go in, the special thing you wanted to say with it, and if the person critiquing has taken that into account versus just pushing it in the direction they would have done it in. In this case I feel it's a bit of the latter, but there's still useful bits in there.

Also a photo-ref study from something that I found on tumblr. Fun stuff, I might try doing a portrait one sometime soon, but there's a finished piece I want to start beforehand. I might post it in stages on here.

Oh, that's a loaded question. Really, it changes with the season, but for the most part, and in almost no specific order:

Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Jean-Leon Gerome, J.C. Leyendecker, Norman Rockwell, Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin, Valentin Serov, Isaak Levitan, John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, Cecilia Beaux, Bierstadt, Eugen Bracht, Carlos de Haes, Velazquez

Seriously though, if you asked me again in two months half of that list would be replaced. I typically just cycle through different movements. I'm feeling Golden Age Illustrators are going to be my next group, whereas right before it was the masters of the loaded brush - Zorn, Sargent, Beaux - and before then it was the Orientalists. Also, it's hard to discount the influence of modern artists, like Craig Mullins, Thomas Scholes, Jaime Jones, and Craig Mullins a few more times over. I try to look at them, though, for why they made the decisions they did, in their work, and not how they did it.

And I forgot to add. I feel that instead of outlining the shadow's shapes, you should let those hatches describe the form seamlessly. Adding the outlines actually 'flattens' the illusion of volume, I feel. It enforces the eye to see shapes with values filled in instead of a 3d form describe using values using pencils. I feel the way you executed it is best used for stylized drawings much like western comics, for example.

The use of outlines on your cast shadows however is good in itself. It enforces the sharp edged quality of cast shadows like the one you used for the cast shadow on the right drawing.

Moving on from pencil quality, the anatomy on the left is a little funny. Especially on the trapezius muscle and the sides of the torso, but is negligible considering the focus of the drawing, but it is something to keep your mind on for next time.

..and it's such a useful comparison in other ways. Clearly he has the experience to decipher the deficits it his doodle of a guy with a funky hat and jet packs by looking at a rendering of an arm by a more experienced artist.

yours may well be the most useful crit ever, in the history of art.

The drawing doesn't make sense in terms of anatomy. There's no distinct appeal, almost no merit in terms of style. I can't tell what's behind him (a stick...gun..?). Only credit I can give is that I can see that it is a drawing of a person with crazy eyes.

You suck. But that's okay. Everyone needs to start somewhere.

Well, firstly you can learn some really basic anatomy. What makes a visual representation of the human body, and how to draw them convincingly. You really need them. Michael Hampton tutorials and book which you can find in the OP is good for you. Then it's just draw draw draw. Also, try to look at good drawings a lot, and see what makes them good. Compare it to yours and see what you can pick up. And I mean proper good drawings. You can pick up some by lurking more.

dude, he needs to learn how to draw first before he starts to fuck around with shit like this.
in the end his poses will look wonky and his characters will still look like shit because he cant draw to begin with.

i'd suggest he starts drawing from references first to rid get rid of symbols and a feel for what a human actually looks like while also(and that's the important part) working on his line weight and rendering. this guy chicken scratches a lot.
another suggestion: before he starts with full body he should focus on specific areas such as the head.

replying to the guy who sketched the girl looking at her laptop. I like it... I'd have her looking down at her laptop. but I know head angles can be tricky. or at least get to know eye anatomy better so you can show more emotion and suggest where the character is looking better. lines look like they need to be more confident. most of the body's anatomy looks good other than the character's right shoulder seem a tad to low. good impression on first glance! keep at it. a lot better than most these other fools.

It seems unclear as to where the midsection meats the lower section and just where the lower might be. Perhaps try a little more under sketch to map out how the spine and hips work?I also feel that the leg dosen't look like it was layered over well enough here's an example. The arms seem a bit too long but may be your going for a lanky look? I would also suggest moving the wall like where it meets the floor up a little higher in the picture plane to better add some depth. Hopefully this helps.

At first I thought it was an streamer close up of an unfinished Twilight Sparkle horn. I suggest try thinking about what you would like to convey to the viewer a little more if your piece is supposed to be non objective try and pin down what shapes and or colors even marks might help relay that information. Circles and triangles are very emphatic in composition and it seems you have both going on. I think perhaps a swirl or vortex might make things interesting and add a little more depth.

Well, I tried to give the impression that the clouds were in kind of a loose swirl. I didn't want to overdo it. I think it would look kinda dumb.

is this from life or imagination? the proportions look way off, her entire hear looks squashed vertically, which in turn makes her hair look like a horizontal marge simpson. her ear is too far back, you should give her a chin, the nose is very flat, her eyes look rather symbolic.
also: careful with the lines! indicating every value change with a strong line (especially edgy ones) makes her look like shes 160 years old. lighter lines will do the trick too, after all you said yourself you want to put value in, which means to describe the form with light rather than with lines.

Yeah, I kept staring it knowing something big seemed off. Thanks, I've just bookmarked the page.
The skirt was me messing around to see how I could get the pleated skirt to show the creases properly (pleats would be expanded fully up later). Also using some monochrome texture as a overlay to merge with it to give it more of a cloth feel.

I've been learning purely in Manga Studio 5 by watching speed-painting videos and browsing DeviantArt for various styles to try and mimic.

LOL, I never even thought to try and read about how to do any of this. If you have any other comments, I don't take offense to anything, so like I said before, be absolutely brutal.

Day 7 of my journey into drawing
I never really honed my talents nor drew a decent amount but now through the help of loomis I am getting better day by day

A man once told me that if you want to be a good artist you have to draw more than anyone else you know.

I try to draw as much as I possibly can aside from time spent at work or school
I will be buying a book on perspective next week. So far I am having a blast! Thank you /Ic/ for the sticky
