Stylization Thread

"Each step being broken down into even smaller steps, the impossible becomes possible." - Glenn Vilppu

Previous Thread: >>1664849

Try to keep calm, have a positive attitude and avoid making Kind Don-Janitor angry!

A general message to aspiring artists: Don't ever think that you should stop attempting to learn how to draw because "it takes too long" or "drawing is just a hobby." Being shitty at your hobby is definitely not better than doing your hobby well, no matter what your laziness tells you. Have some dedication in what you love to do, damn it!

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

yeah, i realised after i made the gif that they might as well be 2d because there's nothing to indicate the depth really. i probably should put so equatorial lines on there.

It is. You can't seem to grasp the basis of critique. When critique is basically presenting an argument and follows the usual rules of presenting a good argument. One has to point out the problem/solution and elaborate the reasoning behind it so that discussion may ensue otherwise it becomes either just an opinion or a very uneducated argument which almost always devolves into name calling and insults. Your "critique" as it seems is the same tactic that tumblr uses to negate any form of dissent towards the critic.

Zakuro looks really good actually, I like everything about her, but Mint(?) looks kinda weird, especially the way her head tilts on her neck.
It looks like her neck is too forward or her head is too far back (i'd say the latter). Her mouth is shaped weird as well.
Also I can't believe no one has said anything about that hand, just look at yourself in the mirror or something to make it less bad.

The difference here is the brunette's left eye which is all kinds of fucked up now in a full sized image. The face line, lips, nose and right eye all almost match up. Which is the case since he drew both images separately, but kept the same cookie cutter female face in his mind while drawing. Try to draw two circles, chances are they'll look similar but not exactly the same.

Stylization is based more on line work. The proportions are not bad at all (although the right arm on the first figure looks a little weird though). Play with your lines a bit more by using straighter lines, more details, less details, curvier lines, etc.

>> No.1667886

The only one that seems extremely off is the first figure. Her arms lack form definition, and the two halves seem to blend together. Unclear form is the main cause of making stylistic works appear wrong.

The first two figures also have pasted on facial features and the third figure seems to have a head drawn it such a way as to intentionally avoid drawing the other side. Otherwise, there are no glaring anatomy issues on any of them really. It's a solid attempt.

Also, it's a sketch. Don't apologize for sketchiness, fuzzy lines, and otherwise sloppy work in a sketch.

they work like normal eyes they're just simplified, you have to imagine them as giant balls though, not as flat circles. then you take out pretty much all the lines outside of the lids which you'd usually use to indicate form. and the rest is up to you! for example the iris is often elongated even when it's not foreshortened for some reason.

it may sound obvious, but they're just stylized real eyes. if you don't understand how to draw a real face/head (at least to some degree), you will never understand anime heads properly either.

and honestly, for starters it doesn't even need to be that deep. just some basic understanding is enough.

The head is too big and you should consider pushing it back as well.
Also the face is too wide right now. Move it closer to the ear line so you have less cheek. The jaw line could be tweaked as well.

A few tips I can give you are to drop imaginary vertical lines from vital points and see where they interact with the rest of the body, look for balance and symmetry. Another one is to give more attention to various lengths. Also, draw a middle line and try to follow it.
That'a about it. Flip the canvas a few times when drawing the construction and choose a neutral color for the background so it doesn't interfere with your color perception.

Otherwise, this looks pretty oldschool, I like it. Keep it up!

The problem is most blondes you see are dying their hair. Hair darkens naturally with age most of the time. Even then the eyelashes never usually get darker than medium brown. Asians obviously have dark hair, so their eyelashes are dark to start with.

I only posted Shiro since she was the first one to come to mind with colored eyelashes. Another example is that dark skinned girl from Bleach with the blonde eyelashes.

The problem with that guy's image is the linework is black, which makes it distracting. If he colored it brown it would work better.

The eyelashes are always darker, unless some pigment disorder shit, than the hair color. And females use mascara a lot, which tends to be black, but goes to light brown.

It's personal taste and if that anon wants to draw colored eyelashes, it's present and common in reality so he can do it.

Most anime tend to make it black but can be too striking on a fair skinned girl. Like here. The eyelashes are not black but a deep brown/purple color (and even fades to medium brown on the ends). It softens the facial features just a bit since the front girls are fair skinned and haired.

Point being, it's a preference and not a solid anime fact.

Anyway, I was fucking giving him advice on what would make his drawing look better. He can take it or leave it, but I was being helpful.
>it's a preference and not a solid anime fact
No, it's more of a solid anime fact. If he intentionally wanted to deviate from it, that's fantastic. That's what creating style is all about. But to me it looked very distracting in the image, and I don't think he made the intentional choice of doing it that way.
Now kindly sir, stop being a douche.

Mikufag does seem to be doing fundamental exercises. Even his stylized stuff he uses very heavy construction. More so than most people I see here using.

No one here should drop doing what they like (stylize drawings) to grind fundys before going back to it. Me personally work on a 2/3 ratio. I'll draw two stylized pictures, then spend 8 hours on several pages of figure, anatomy, etc study. Which I repeat every three days when I cycle my schedule.

All it does it burn you out on creativity and desire to draw.

There's not really much to understand. It's simply another way of constructing the body. Instead of using cylinders, balls and boxes, the artist uses rhomboids (I think that's what their called, diamond-like shapes). If there's more buried in the moonrunes it's more than likely explaining the process, which is shown in the pictures.

Saging because most of my work is poorly drawn fetishy stuff.

Granted my nihongo skills are not top-notch, and I can't even read the hand-written parts, but he talks about the importance of overlapping forms in making the silhouette read and balancing the figure correctly.
He also specifies multiple time (like multiple time in each paragraph) that he "thinks" this is right, it's "probably" the right way etc. I don't know if it's false modesty or what, but you probably shouldn't take this guy as a textbook anyways.

The eyelashes take the focus away from the eyes, warm colors have a habit of doing that over cool colors. To make them seem lighter, perhaps you should keep them minimal as possible. Be careful with the eye area itself, the shading makes them look really sunken, the eye is raised and rounded but the shading doesn't account for this. Below consider using highlights to emphasize the highness of the cheekbones, rather than shade to give depth to underneath the eye.

Set some time aside to practice locks of hair, it's pretty fun, and can be used for other objects (grass, ribbons, etc) and once you get good at that do some quick sketches with hair and faces. And don't forget to pay attention to ears.

Also, the heel of the foot shouldn't have so many wrinkles, and the big toes could use a little improvement.

Keep working and don't give up, the fact that people respond means they care enough to criticize, as opposed to lost causes.

I have dark blonde/light brown hair and my eyelashes are so blonde you almost can't see them at all when I'm not wearing mascara, same goes for my mother and one of my close friends. It's more common then you think, you are just used to seeing women with make-up. That being said, very fair-skinned blonde girls and red-heads look better with brown mascara then black.

I honestly wouldn't pay the slightest attention to the color of someone's eyelashes unless something really strange is going on with them. I can't really say what you should do in this case, it's very important to consider at what point (in time) you want to draw the character to best represent the motion you want to get across. Actual imagine where the character's weight was before the movement, what movement they will be doing. Now, being that it's a drawing, you don't have to be so strict. If you want it to look like a flowing elegant dance let's say, you should/can try to incorporate that in the construction, and in your lines themselves. I'm sure none of these things are actually news to you, but actually take more time to think about them and make a decision with reason behind it. If something doesn't work, it's just a lesson learned for next time.

I think it's more what you drew. Maybe I'm confused/misinformed here, but the style (giant weapons/strange poses well flying through the air, oversized clothing, so on) seems to be one one that doesn't really punish (what would be flaws in other styles) too badly, which in-turn I don't find pleasing to look at. The only things I can really comment on, is the back of the hair needs to be redone, and the sandal things should be visible under the foot (Unless it's that really weird string style or whatever, but the thongs don't imply that). The lines look really nice.

Hand is stretched out, it goes in the middle section of the finger. On the front hand, all the weight is pushed against your palm/thumb area. Both hands should be near vertical. And if he's taking aim, the back hand should be near the face/cheek. Don't just wing it with things you don't know, at the very least google images a quick reference.
