Stylization Thread

"Each step being broken down into even smaller steps, the impossible becomes possible." - Glenn Vilppu

Previous Thread: >>1661989

Try to keep calm, have a positive attitude and avoid making Kind Janitor-Ssi angry!

A general message to aspiring artists: Don't ever think that you should stop attempting to learn how to draw because "it takes too long" or "drawing is just a hobby." Being shitty at your hobby is definitely not better than doing your hobby well, no matter what your laziness tells you. Have some dedication in what you love to do, damn it!

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Yo, I've seen your stuff a couple of times the last few days and I'm not gonna lie - it's not super good technically speaking. But there are still some things I really like - the profile in the top left, for example. It has a certain grim caricature-like feel to it.

It feels like you could develop a pretty neat style if you study proper anatomy and construction and apply that knowledge to your current style.

Keep on studying and don't give up, anon. I'd be interested in seeing your take on the decadent and inbred European nobles of centuries past.

The only thing I want to draw is animu. At what point do I start studying that instead of all this Loomis/Villpu/etc that I'm currently working with. I'm putting in hours every day on these things, and getting next to no enjoyment out of it, but when making crappy stuff (like this image) I have fun. Will I really not improve at drawing animu by attempting to draw animu?

practice drawing faces and hair if you want to draw proper H.
it's because you leave them out so often that even when you do draw them, they look inpersonal and noobish.

i'd say that character is very important to style and cartooning in general. and the expression , hairdo and clothes play a huge part in it.
but for you: if you are always drawing naked people, you have to at least use the face and hair to show character, otherwise they have no character at all.

Her left arm looks rather awkward. I wouldn't want to be carrying anything like that. And her back leg looks too high up unless she's walking down a hill/stairs (which the rest of her body doesn't suggest). Her right arm is strange as well, but not as bad. Also, adjust the shoulders (and of coarse the hips, but I think you already did that?) to emphasize the weight changing.

Personally I prefer it without, but if you usually draw outlines in your art then I wouldn't change it for a commission. They might have chosen you because they like the way you outline your work or something.
Also whilst the rendering an anatomy is generally decent, that arm is long and her hand is massive, if it's supposed to be foreshortened then the angle of that arm doesn't look right. That hand would make sense if the woman in the center is masturbating and it's her hand.

You are missing the point, do studies first. Knuckle down on perspective, learn how to work with basic forms, tell a story with lines of gesture to convey action and movement, know how to describe forms in space.

Then after all that and more use everything you've learned on Animu.

Ask yourself, why do you practice? You practice for understanding. You yourself must improve your understanding of what you are drawing. Anime consist of simplified figures, so in order to properly simplify them you need to understand things about the figure. Drawing people more will make this process incredibly easier because you will also gain muscle memory/improved coordination, but understanding is paramount. If you alternate between figure practice and anime, you will start to make connections between the figure and it's simplifications/exaggerations in anime. The same goes with many of the fundamentals. Understanding of perspective will help you objects in space in relation to each other and practicing it will make this process easier to "see".

My question is more, when do I start doing this? And I have some trouble understanding what techniques will or won't apply. Are there any tutorials/books/channels/etc that are recommended for animu that I could be going through simultaneously or after I finish Loomis/Vilppu? I keep coming across massive amount of stuff for drawing comic styled characters, but nearly everything I've seen on animu is terrible.
To be clear, my goal is to make short animations and I want to be able to get to the level that I can actual start trying to animate stuff as quickly as possible, even if the results aren't fantastic.

Style kinda comes naturally as you begin understanding shapes and how they relate to each other, you get a feeling for how you prefer to do things.

My advice, even if I'm not very good, would be to just have fun and experiment - don't worry too much about your own personal style since it'll grow and develop naturally the more you learn, draw and experience.

Stop thinking of "animoo" as if it was a very specific style... I mean, it IS very specific but that's for another thread. For animation what you need to pay close attention to -from what I've heard- is to the gesture, particularly torso construction. Draw some quick gestures trying to capture the movement of the spine and head, then legs then arms because arms are just attached to the shoulders and they are a bit more independent in terms of movement.

>>1664958
That's actually really helpful. I was going to go through animation books after I was comfortable with my drawing, but I think I should skim through them first to know what to be looking out for/practicing on.

You know that what you call "anime" is just cartooning in japan, right?
unless you're saying cartooning in general is also only about copying.
while there's some truth to that, it's still more complicated than that.
the point of cartooning is not the "style", it's being able to draw many things from imagination without taking too much time.
you can't judge cartooning on the same terms as your "art" since it has a fundamentally different purpose.
by it's nature its:
-simpler
-about depicting things from imagination.
-easier to animate

say are you doing those small shoulders on purpose? i thought you were, but looking at the reference, maybe it's a habit of yours?
you could try to go for broader shoulders. well proportioned broad shoulders can add femininity.
of course the shoulders in the photo are a too broad for my taste, but the shoulders you draw are also too small. in combination with muscles it doen't look very good imo.

in terms of bodytype you are drawing the loli. have you tried out other builds that could emphasize the muscles better?

also your faces are always somewhat flat.

>> No.1665536

What, no they cannot. In fact, that reference's torso is quite masculine, minus the arms. The only thing he would achieve is a manly looking girl.

i said well proportioned. and i said the photo is too broad and not what i meant.
well proportioned shoulders are just broad enough so that your arms can hang freely.

just look at any model, yes also japanese ones and idols.
compare their shoulder to ribcage ratio and compare that proportion in your (if you are that guy) drawings.

the combination of loli shoulders and muscles just makes her look like a loli manlet

I am having a lot of trouble trying to copy a character.
My basic goal is to be able to draw the character in a bunch of scene's and poses. So I figure I will need to draw the base pose and figure out how to get every detail exact on her. I keep making it feel disproportioned and too thin of legs/arms, too tall, face seems emotionless, and hair is flat. I can't seem to capture the character in my drawing. Can anyone give me advice?

I feel like even if I can manage to get the lines in the right place, with the right angle, I can't get the curves exactly right, or the besier curve or whatever. And my line weights are shit. But basically everything just end up a bit off making it seem like shit.

If you want to be able to draw that character from any angle, you don't need to think about the line placement. You need to break her down into shapes. These shapes are what you will attempt to place in various angles and poses. If I were doing what you were doing now, instead of comparing line to line, I would compare shape to shape. For example, If I were to pick up right where you left off, I would simplify her thigh into a shape next, and compare it to the other leg length, then sketch out that shape. After you get her proportions down, you can refine the linework. You will not get exact line placement so don't bother. You are just aiming for likeness, and likeness is in proportion. There are a ton of things you need to understand before you can do these steps though, like >>1665562 said.

I like it. Nose and mouth need adjustment, as you said, but the overall pose is pretty good and I like the hair. I think the nose and mouth might be angled differently than the rest of the face, which might be the problem.

This is just a thing that I like to do, and you might be different, but try to switch what parts of the picture you're working on from time to time.

It's easy to get tunnel vision when you're slaving away at a single part, but if you work a bit on the eyes, switch to the arms, render the thighs a bit, and then when you go back to the eyes you might see problems you didn't see before.

Just an idea! I'd love to see the finished result!

You're not in the right mindset to study and you're not sure why where or what you're studying.

The first time I read one of these artbooks by vilppu, loomis or hampton it just all whizzed past me and meant almost nothing. Now I go back to them all the time to pick up specific lessons after drawing and seeing where I fall short. I'll continue to use them as my resources till it's all built in. Of course I didn't just force myself to grind meaninglessly like draw boxes of anatomy when I didn't even know if what I learned actually helped me in "real" drawing.

tl;dr: Just draw what you want. When you figure out "shit I can't seem to draw this" or "this doesn't look right" just look up what to do in those books. They suddenly make more sense.

Even bigger, the thinner the lines the better, at least for now, having more negative space let's you see your mistakes better.
Also, try to focus more on gesture and structure rather than the details of the anatomy.

Remember what Broko says, detail is nothing without the gesture (and proper structure).
