Maybe this will help, forgive the quality, though. It is supposed to be a bottom look of a street, with a "fallen guy", being attacked by some kind of mech, while another guy is trying to interfere.
I'm learning animation, so I need to keep it simple, since I'm trying to work with silouettes.

>> No.1652850

the postion of his hand in the foreground doesn't make sense if its laying on the street. Also his head and torso are too big. And heads are shaped like that. Learn to anatomy, perspective, and gesture especially if you're trying to get into animation.

I wasn't sure when drawing the hand, but when I'm trying to get up from the floor, I point it in the direction I want to move (in this case, to the camera, running away from the mech). About the head, I know it is huge, but isn't it supposed to be bigger as it it closer to the view point? If you are comparing it to the rest of the body, then the feet would be tiny.

It's only a sketch, anyway, but thanks for the help.

Even at that angle, the head should not be that big from the cameras perspective. And I'm not referring to the hands direction, but rather how it would sprawl with laying on a flat surface like a street. Pic related, some examples with my hand. There's really no substitute to drawing from life. This is especially good for gesture considering people outside don't intend to be your subjects so they won't sit still.
Look at Vilppu's Drawing manual, that's the go-to for beginning gesture. It explains all the necessary fundamentals in it and the things you should be thinking about when drawing. I would go into detail but I can't give better advice than what's in that book. It's pretty easy to find a PDF of this in lots of places on the internet, I'd urge you to go grab it as soon as possible and start working through it.

Additionally, contrary to popular advice, I'd urge you to stay away from Loomis to begin with. The stuff his book covers are interpretive form techniques which always make newbies mad and make their drawings retarded because they don't know how to use his techniques properly as they don't have the prerequisite knowledge to use it.

By the way I've been the one telling you to make an effort. Just to tell you I'm not trying to berate you but to help you.

>> No.1652886

>>1652878

Thank you, I was reading the Loomis one right now, but I give Vilppu's a try. Would you recommend me practising every single step I learn from it, or rather learning a bunch of stuff, and the try to draw with that knowledge?

>> No.1652889

>>1652886
I wouldn't worry about practicing everything meticulously to begin with, but have a read through it, think on what being said and take the exercises in. The few circle at the beginning exercises may seem pointless to begin with but they are valid, just don't fixate on them *too* much and neglect the rest of the book. Make sure to practice the stuff as you go but ofcourse when you're finished reading the book, continue to draw and apply what you've learned. I've read this book years ago when I was just starting out and I still go back to it.
If you're studying animation, honestly this book will give you the edge on your class mates. Gesture drawing is absolutely key to expressive animation. It will give you fluidity, form and balance while also letting you train your understanding of human proportion.
Best of luck.

Same guy again, best thing to get is a bamboo. It's the best for value and is enjoyed by beginners and pros alike.

The best thing for learning proportion and stuff is drawing from life. If you can seek out a life drawing class (ask around your university, when I was there the animation class had one every week and the lecturors don't mind you bumming in on it), but drawing people IRL in the park and stuff is good too.
Also there's websites like this
http://artists.pixelovely.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing
which are great.
An exercise which I did a lot of when I started out was 30 second drawing, it seems impossible to begin with but it will allow you to break the habit of over detailing things to make them look good rather than begin by laying out solid fundamentals. It will help you develop muscle memory of how people should look and at the same time help you with yourenergy and balance in pieces. I still do it today.

I don't think it's a bad place to be, I certainly learn a lot here and get inspiration from other artists, but there is a lot of petty negativity with half of its denizens. A mod deleted one of my comments because some anons got angry that I criticized what I thought was a lackluster piece by Tehmeh or Catbib or someone.

Just don't let yourself be dictated by these people. There was a whole thread once where the OP was lamenting about how his art became a loveless endeavor because he only drew to please /ic/'s standard rather than himself. I like to draw furry sometimes, which a lot of people here hate with great vehemency, even though they're okay with loli and foot fetishes.

I just say screw'em and keep drawing buxom dog women or cat boys with long dicks and firm butts.

I would really just work on your cross hatching. Closer together with more lines means darker and further apart with less and less is lighter. In some of the figures on the first page, it just looks like straight up chicken scratching and landmarking.

That's also another thing, be aware of your line economy. I see you're maybe trying to get out of chicken scratching the figures (outlines, not shading/shadows.) but, you're still doing it for some such as the kinda bent over lady with noface. Make more confident lines, bigger strokes.

>> No.1655514

>>1655503
Thanks. I'm trying to develop a style of shadin that's used with hatching, but it's kind of difficult and doesn't come out well for darker values.

Also, the first page was a bunch of quick drawings trying to get the specific angles of Hebe and Ganymede at the MFA in Boston, so that's why it's so scratchy. Thanks, though, I'll try to take care of that. Also, as for the No Face lady, the figure page was originally supposed to be a gesture study, but soon it turned into a figure study page instead, hence why the top two are so scratchy and featureless.

Thanks again, your advice was really helpful.

But I've been progressing slowly. I've only just now finished page 16. Is this a sign that I'm not drawing enough? How far should I try and get through in a day? I was going to make my goal 10 pages a day.

>> No.1655655

I don't think you should do the individual pages, such as page x for example. Instead, I think you should practice the exercises and there's no limited amount you should practice said exercises. Practice until you feel you have a good grasp on what the exercise is trying to teach you.

I see you need to work on line control/economy and getting those forms to look three dimensional, as they are looking quite flat at the moment. Sometimes it's ok to leave in the construction lines to indicate form as you are not doing an illustration, but rather, you are doing a study.

I'm at the beginning of Vilppus, and I'm trying to "give life" to some boxes. I'm not sure if it is understandable for other people what the boxes are supposed to be representating, so if it is completely shit, so I need some feedback.

The first ones are simply boxes, but there are others on which ones I tried to represent sadness, happyness, or doubt. As you to the right, there are also some scenes, like a dancing couple, a few fights, and a policeman aiming/arresting someone who was fleeing.

What are the most obvious mistakes in this, and how could I fix them? Thank you.

That looks a bit better, it's more "free". Still keep an eye out for proportions that are obviously wrong, and try not to let limbs or bodies become "noodly". Normally if one side of the body is being stretched, the other side will have a defined "pinch" or compression. Proko has a good youtube vid about this.
>>1652444
That's some hardcore grinding. I'm seeing a lot of linework, and what looks like blind contour drawing and continuous-line drawing. Is there any specific reason for that? Like the other anon said, work on perspective. I'd also like to see some more use of values, even if it's just cross-hatching, but that might not be applicable to what your prof wants you to do.

>> No.1660927

I'd say watch the collarbones, they generally don't swoop upward and get pointy in the middle like you've drawn.

Pic on the left has some bad juxtaposition with the bottle she's holding, the barrel in the background, and her leg; making them seem they're all connected. I'd move the barrel and separate it from the bottle. Also, watch your ellipses on both the bottle and barrel, they're looking a tad bit flat.

As for the breasts and what Anon has said, yeah. Keep in mind that breasts don't have to be round spheres and are squishy objects depending on motion and gravity.

And if you're afraid of ruining your drawing by practicing inking, get a nice high res scan and blue line print it out to practice on. Or if you don't have a scanner, get some near transparent vellum from the art store to lay over the drawing and ink it on that.

That is true. I started by drawing Doctor Who, Wolverine and logos of classic rock bands all over my notebooks. But by Jr. High and High School I was already interested in drawing sexy/cute/heroic women because... well, Nerdy Teenager, duh. I suppose the topics and wanting to draw them went hand in hand (pardon the pun).

Granted, yes, these days there is a glut of porn 2D/3D on the internet. Naturally some people will want to jump the gun and bypass the basics. But if it provides the budding artist an incentive to start and continue drawing, who am I to say no. That's why when I critique I generally don't comment on the subject matter but more on general artistic principles.
