Before that though I'd like to add that I think these threads are a good way to observe how well you're doing. I posted in one of these last year and the feedback I got allowed me to find that I hadn't progressed well enough and put my work ethic and outcome into perspective for me.
It's also a good way to observe your strengths and weaknesses.

Yeah, I don't think any art school apart from the best of best universities teach fundamentals any more. I'm not trying to discourage you or anything, just keep at it. I'd give you some pointers but at this stage there's nothing I can tell you that isn't in the sticky.
If you've only just discovered /ic/ then that's good, although the quality of work on /ic/ these days isn't as good as it used to be but I've got /ic/ to thank for turning me over to fundamentals and proper stuff.

If you want some perspective from people with real motivation and talent then I'd urge you to start a sketchbook thread on conceptart.org forums.
Keep at it and study hard

improvement is improvement, you went from flat as fuck to having some prospective, and assuming you aren't drawing every chance you get, that isn't half bad.

granted, you need to learn how to draw prospective better, you need to draw how flexing and... the fuck is the other one... compressing? from what i can tell you have the head and face somewhat down, i would honestly suggest drawing a torso, arms to the elbows and legs to the knees. dont worry about hands or feet just get use to dealing with muscle.

Well the reason for not really learning too much on that particular subject is because it feels a bit much for the time I have now. I'm still in high school (senior) and I've mainly been trying to focus more on perspective, lighting, rendering, anatomy, etc. Composition has yet to reach my table because of all the work that's on my plate right now, but when I have time during the summer, I do plan to do some learning on it. But this whole "I'm-so-busy-because-I'm-in-high-school," idea - for the record - is not an excuse, I know that... but it does hold back when I try to study art fundamentals and school subjects at the same time, if you get what I'm saying.

>> No.1663270

>>1663259
Composition is not your problem. Everything is your problem. Everything will always be your problem so long as you are an artist and you should never feel done learning about anything. You say you are focusing but you named 4 different things and tagged on "etc". If you want to get better you need to realize that you DO have the time. You always have the time. Never having time is a bullshit excuse for those who are impatient. It is just a matter of focusing your time wisely. Do some heavy reflecting on your art and your efforts. You know what? Do whatever you want. I and noone else can force you to care about improving your art, but at least try to understand where you actually stand before trying to market your shit.

During these last two years I've practically given up video games, which was a pretty big part of my life to focus more on my art. When I tagged "etc." that was just an overall generalization on what I keep with my other works, which includes still lifes, photo studies, environments, so on and so forth. I do try my best to work on this every day because I know that hard work does pay off. And you're right, everything is my problem. And I'm going to let it be my problem unless I let my courage conquer my confusion. Where I am now, I do need to work a lot more, and I will work more.

I don't have any sort of dedicated schedule and just draw/paint whatever interests me at the time! I might have improved more if I did have one of those hard core agendas, though. Rather than drawing what an eye, or anything for that matter, looks like, you draw a generic representation of it.
Basically, drawing what you think something should look like rather than what it would actually look like.

I guess it depends on where you started, but you seem like you are doing just okay. your sketches are pretty earnest attempts at copying form, regardless of how successful you were. you might enjoy following along with mark's drawing tutorials on youtube. I've been following along with his videos, but this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHefdroQdDo gives a lot of helpful exercises that would benefit people who are not necessarily interested in a career in industrial design. his explanations are direct and consistent.

You're the smug piece of shit that thought you could draw better than googum. I hate both of you, really, but you have the fucking audacity to insult someone because you think you're better than them.

You both have no sense of form. You both invent anatomy. You both lazily position hands hands so you don't have to mess with the fingers. You, however have your own set of bigger problems than he does.

You give your figures unnecessarily busy hair because you have no other idea to give hair volume without giving them fly-aways, like an amateur mangaka.

You only draw busts because you are afraid of legs, like an amateur mangaka.

You give your figures "chipmunk cheeks" because you have never drawn from life using a real human skull model and, therefore, have no understanding of what structures are there, like an amateur mangaka.

All of your protraits (this is an assumption, but I'm sure it's accurate) are at neutral 3/4 views because you use flat measurement to place features, or you don't measure at all because you just "wing it and redraw until it 'looks' right" like an amateur mangaka.

Your drapery is shit and drawn out of nothingness because you don't build or imagine forms and you simply skip straight to line work, like and amateur mangaka.

Finally, YOU HANG YOUR NOSES. Stop this right now. This is, again, is amateur mangaka shit that actually sees production all the fucking time and it makes those who actually know how to properly draw look bad.

I wouldn't be nearly as pissed if you weren't so fucking arrogant about your "waifus" on /vg/.

Do you really think that your work is production material?

Until you learn to take a step back, look at the mistakes that you've made, admit that you've made them, and work on fixing them, you can kindly go fuck yourself.

Forget about composition. Composition, in a sense, is one of the last things an artist needs to learn. In fact, you learn it as you go.

Continue to study color theory, but take a second look at value, and understand the concept of local value and how color affects this trait. Your colored works aren't taking this into account, making your colors look like they are conflicting with each other. Also, learn about how light affects color. Good luck to you.

You seem to think that this rule only applies to realistic art, but this is not true. When drawing a stylized, simplified drawing a good artist still has the three dimensional shape of the thing in mind, even if you don't directly see it on the final image.
If you don't do that you'll end up unable to draw things from various angles and things just won't look as good.

No problem. If you want, here are a few tips as well.

1. Saturation is directly related to levels of light. If you don't know already, saturation, or chroma, is the measurement of color intensity. The stronger your light source, the more "pure" your colors will appear. This is mainly the reason why pure blacks and pure whites look so unnatural: it's nearly impossible in a natural setting to have a pure white light. This brings me to my second tip.

2. All lights have a "temperature". Light naturally has a shift between two different perceived temperatures: warm and cool. Warm lights tend to be red and orange, while cool lights are blue and sometimes even purple. Light temperature directly affects all color in an image. You can find a perfect example of light temperature in action by shifting the "color temperature" setting on any computer monitor or television set you may have. You'll notice how the colors shift while still looking somewhat natural, depending upon environment.

3. All color has its own value. This is called "local value." Local value is the perceived value a color has in any given light. For example, while red appears to be a very bright color, red has, in fact, one of the lowest local values of the primary colors, making it appear nearly black when rendered in grey scale. Using this knowledge, you can pick and chose your colors more wisely, understanding that certain colors will, even in colored pieces, will appear darker than others.

4. Lastly, limit your palette. This is one of the biggest mistakes beginners make: they attempt to render a huge range of color in their pieces when it doesn't call for it. In ancient times, paint was incredibly expensive, and many artists were forced to paint with limited palettes lest their coffers ran dry. In hindsight, however, this was the best option, as limiting the amount of colors used allowed for greater expression and taught the masters of yesterday about color synergy. One of (con't)

>> No.1666743

>>1666734

(con't) the most important aspects of painting begins before you even grab a brush. Your palette can define your piece before you even begin. Generally, a good rule is to limit yourself to 5 colors and 5 values. In this way, you can not only feel more comfortable and less overwhelmed in the sheer options you are presented, but you can also focus on blend on the canvas to make new shades as needed, creating further depth in your piece when you, say, mix green and yellow to make a higher value color that's somewhere in between. This is something that will become more enjoyable as you practice, and it may even feel oxymoronic: when you limit your choice of colors, you'll feel like you have infinitely more choices than when you had access to the entire spectrum.

trying to avoid being "that guy" but all this technical stuff should be eaten with the small spoon nomsayin.

you can easily get too concerned with the physical accuracies of value / saturation, and forget that ultimately all that matters is that you create an amazing image. don't become a human 3d renderer. if there's a physicall correct value that creates too much contrast, drawing attention away from your focal point, you gotta go in there and say "fuck you physics and consistancy" and you gotta find a way to make it work, without the inconsistancy being obviou to the viewer.

>> No.1666782

indeed. the worst thing is when people do things wrong because they know the technical rule and they let that override their actual observations.

Suggestion if you want to improve at a dramatically faster rate, even though it may take some time to get used to:

Switch your usual method for personal/fun drawing to loose unfinished sketches (holding your pencil on its side helps a lot in this regard), and LOTS of them. Buy cheap newsprint paper so that you don't have to worry about using expensive sketchbook paper on this. In addition, use this time to practice subjects that you find challenging. Go outside of your comfort zone as much as possible.

Use most of the time you spend on polishing a single picture on doing studies of master drawings (by Durer, Raphael, Da Vinci, etc. Pic related for an example. Don't worry about getting it absolutely identical, but try your best to replicate the drawing. If it's too difficult, take a break from it and come back later.

For those studies I suggest using toned paper (i.e. quality colored paper, preferably tan, grey, or blue), a 6B graphite pencil, and a white charcoal pencil. Use the tone of the paper as your midtone and add the the light and dark values with your tools.

You don't have to take a class, have access to models, or even have to exactly copy what you see. Just go to where people/animals/etc. are and draw them.

I'm sure there's at least cattle you can draw if you live in the middle of nowhere.

>> No.1667666

>>1658433

There's definitely improvement there, but they both feel a bit flat.

Find some ways to work on seeing value. Studying master drawings using toned/colored paper, a soft graphite pencil, and white charcoal is extremely helpful in that regard. Doing still life is also a great practice for seeing light and shadow.

Also, two things about your line quality:

1) LOOOOTS of chicken scratch. Work on having more confident lines (doing practice with pens/permanent markers helps). There's some FZD video on this that's also very helpful.

2) The value and thickness of your lines seem a bit indecisive. I don't know exactly what to tell you on this, though. Someone want to weigh in?

ALSO, if you're mostly doing loose, sketchy drawings try primarily holding your pencil on its side.

>> No.1667685

Posemaniacs and its ilk are wonderful (especially for pencil mileage), but do gestures from life as well. Go to a dog park and do simple gestures of their movements (don't worry about it being perfect, just capture the FEEL/idea of their movement). Go to a restaurant/coffee shop/plaza/wherever lots of people are and do rough gestures of people sitting, walking around, etc. Get a cat. Find whatever you can find that's breathing, and draw it.

And yeah, still life is definitely something I'd tackle every now and then. Especially if you want to practice value (it helped me a lot).

Something interesting is that, I painted the original in about 1000 x 1300 resolution, and I gotta say to you all, as a wod of warning; Don't ever do this. Fucking shit, so much pain and suffering was had.

One thing that's definitely noticeable in 14' is that your drawings have more life and personality to them. There's more evidence of construction and drawing with forms as well.

I mean, yeah there's a lot of room for improvement, but I'd say that you've made a good jump from 13' to 14'. Just keep on truckin', research and study what you have trouble with, and push forward, man.

One thing I'd suggest is (apologies for being a broken record >>1667648) doing studies of master drawings. You'll learn a lot through the process of doing attempts at copies.

Wat
You clearly improved since 2008. You improved at least up till 2012. That 2011 colour work is pretty bad compared to the later ones.
Your stuff is pretty good, I think you reached the point where you should be more ambitious with your projects. Draw multiple characters, backgrounds, characters in action, etc.
