As of now your edges seem a bit flat and/or muddy, you could try adding some fine shading using a bit darker and warmer tone, almost like a contour on the side of the face, and just clear up and darken a bit the neck. Use this Bernini for ref.

Made up a little thing for you, hope this proves useful?
I just generally do a rough light sketch of the body shape, then sketch the details/design of everything slightly darker over that. I put flat black lines over that, then quickly put flat colours down, way sloppier than in this image.
From there it's just touching up and adding simple effects, and for a light texture I switch the colour layer of the drawing to a watercolour texture in SAI.

What I do is really simple though, I'd recommend looking at better artists and picking apart their work to try and get an understanding for it.

You make the upper torso and the lower legs too upright. I suspect the upper torso (including arms and head) is too large as well.

Make sure you're always working big shapes to little shapes. If you had the big shapes right then this problem wouldn't have occurred.

The face is also off in a lot of somewhat subtle ways that add up. Compare your zoomed face to the ref. Use your knowledge of construction and anatomy to help you make it accurate.

It's probably the extra sag and creases. The abundant, hairy cross contour lines don't help.

Compare the body of a 20 year old with that of a 65 year old. Note how the skin behaves differently: looser, less elastic, more wrinkles, etc.

A much bigger issue with your piece is your proportions and drawing forms in space. That head is tiny and those legs are massive. There are lots of little anatomical inaccuracies that you'll improve with study. For now, learn how to draw the knee, and how the region changes shape if muscles are contracting or if the knee is bent, and learn how ankles work because what you've drawn looks bulbous, disconnected and broken.

Did you abstract your big shapes, such as the envelope around the figure? Are you drawing your shapes with straight edges (line segments) instead of curves? Are you constantly comparing the angles and lengths of these line segments. Are you checking where landmarks that you assign line up with on vertical and horizontal lines? All of these will help.

you are so worried about copying the values of the reference. you need to make the value relationships read WITHIN YOUR PAINTING (caps to emphasize, not yell, not trying to be rude).

but you analyze isolated parts of the ref image and try to copy their value, completely disregarding the relationships within what YOU are creating.

i wish i knew how to explain this in more simple terms. do you think you know what i'm trying to say?

basically: you don't copy values. you copy value relationships and transitions. does that make sense?

>> No.1652085

>>1652082
I am not an expert so take this for what you will but the shading is way way too blurry. Take a lamp or any light source and hold an object between it and a wall. Take note of how the distance from the wall/light determines the sharpness of the shadow. Some things look rather arbitrarily shaded as well. For example, the box beside the blue one is shaded as if it were a rounded object, even though it is quite clearly supposed to be a flat surface. You can also see parts where it looks like it's glowing around the left most person. I think you need to use a harder edged smaller brush and actually determine the proper color rather than painting things black with a multiply layer.

Concentrate on an area you want to focus on (in this case value) and don't worry too much about the details. Just focus on the values of the big shapes and ignore the lesser details.

I'd also say get a better reference with more natural lighting if you're just starting out. It might be more helpful value wise.

When asking for criticism from more experienced people, don't ever say "well, i think you're wrong because ___." about anything. Unless it is, in fact, complete bullshit. You can usually tell when your being snaffu'd. Or if you actually know what your talking about, which in this case you dont. Anon's are actually trying to help you, a beginner, get better. You obviously know little about composition, perspective, and anatomy/proportions. Study real life, like how the pros that draw manga did, then stylize. It's a process. When you defend yourself instead of absorbing advice, people wont want to help you anymore and you wont learn anything, and eventually stop drawing because you cant figure out why your art looks like shit.

your eyelevel doesnt match your drawing in regard to your characters, they are sitting on a different plane than the one you are showing, also the guy sitting down is way too small compared to the distance you are visually showing. But yeah try looking at the plane the feet are standing on, and think of them as boxes, and extend lines, should give you an estimate of the horizon. Also now that i think of it, the guy sitting down is supposed to be a kid, but your kids are looking too old, which fucks it up. Also something about the shape cloud right side is annoying me, its like it doesnt want to go anywhere, but generally be carefull of crowding all the corners of your composition. Especially plants in right side bottom corner have a vignette quality to them, and they dont seem very thought out/designed. i think you can create a more interesting foreground if you spend time on it. But yeah, basically you are crowding all the corners of your comp. Just my thoughts, use what you can, discard the rest.

I started this piece back in june of last year, I was still pretty new to doing original pieces and got stuck real bad & scrapped it shortly after. Been going back through old pieces to see if I could finish any of them off with what I've learnt since then, any resemblance to that piece is purely coincidental. Though I do think i may have used a brush from the set someone uploaded a while back. Sorry, I'm a brush hoarder, don't castrate me.
I spent months trying to imitate other peoples styles and all it got me was bad painting habits and a wasted year. The last thing I want to do is be a shit clone, it's just taking me a while to find my style.

It seems like you need to learn about composition.
The robe guy is the main focus there, therefore he should be more detailed and have brighter colors or higher contrast.
Don't give those hills at the right too much detail because they are competing with the main focus.
Also, stop with those small brush strokes, they are useless and make your painting look messy.

the face proportion is way off, you need to learn at least the basic proportions and also if you are gonna start with the wrong colour palette , you should consider work with grayscale instead first.
hope this helps a little bit its not perfect but just so you get the idea.

There is no sense of perspective, scaling or composition. You should at least try a rule of thirds and work out the composition in thumbnails. Right now it's a mess, you have a giant blob with no indication of flow and direction. A successful landscape relies on strong sense of perspective, it looks like you have no idea how to approach this. Next time, lay down some vanishing points and even grids before you begin.
