Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Each step being broken down into even smaller steps, the impossible becomes possible." - Glenn Vilppu

Previous Thread: >>1635387

Try to keep calm, have a positive attitude and avoid making Kind Janitor-san angry!

A general message to aspiring artists: Don't ever think that you should stop attempting to learn how to draw because "it takes too long" or "drawing is just a hobby." Being shitty at your hobby is definitely not better than doing your hobby well, no matter what your laziness tells you. Have some dedication in what you love to do, damn it!

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

And now someone will come up and say the usual, i am a hobbyist and i don't really care how much i make.
The thing is that you are destroying the whole market by doing that. No person that respect himself would work
for someone else for 20 dollars a day. If his quality is not that good then it will not sell so good, but selling something
that will take him 8-10 hours to make for 20 dollars? That's absurd, he might as well just use the time to draw something
that he actually wants to draw.

>> No.1641206

On the chart color, you might get better answers from /gd/. Graphic design is their business.

On prices, there's no such thing as too much or too little, only what the market will bear. Here's a little secret. We currently live in an ass-backward world where people are willing to donate money to Kickstarter, or pay a few hundred bucks for a porn commission of the weirdest fetish, but they'll pirate a 5 dollar comic. Most artists would like to think that quality is the only thing that matters to a freelancer, but when you work directly for fans on the net, what you can charge depends on how you can appeal to your fans on a personal level. Don't convince people your artwork is worth that much. Convince them you could be their friend, and that they should want to give money to you.

What are you talking about? I'm condemning it. I KNOW it kills the industry, and I'm tired of seeing it. I've seen way too people who

No one is "destroying" the market.

If prices are pushed so low that many people are forced to abandon this as a career, then there will be less competition and prices will go up again. If you feel overseas artists have an unfair advantage because of exchange rates, then ask yourself if you're willing to pay twice as much for your computers and tablets when they are not made in Asia.

The only way to be above all that is to be truly good. Good on a rarefied level. So good that the level you can put out cannot be matched by the hobbyist doing $20 commissions. This is your own problem, not anyone else.

So that we don't have to reach that point. I am also a hobbyist, and i am willing to draw for others
for some extra money, but if we get to the point where 20 dollars for a full colored character are the standard,
then i might as well draw something that i actually want. You will probably make more in 8 hours by begging

His prices may work. Or they may not. I'm not here to tell him that, that's something only he can find out.

My point is that this is not something you can control, for the benefit of everyone. The market is self-correcting. You don't get to set prices for anyone but yourself. There are people who can draw better, and paint faster, than you. There are people who can make a living on $20 dollar commissions because they live in a country where a dollar buys a full day's worth of food. Maybe that's OP. I don't know, you don't know.

The guitar model is a Gibson Les Paul, and it is usually smaller than that, assuming your character is a normal sized adult. That is a more of a semi hollow guitar size. The guitar you drew also has a crazy thin but long neck, which makes it pretty hard to play irl.

Anyway, guitars aside, you need to work on your anatomy, specifically, the proportions. The proportions is all weird, like her hands, her arm length, her feet, etc. Try using reference; put them beside your drawing and compare once in a while to get that checked. Being a stylized drawing, you can also play around with the proportions a bit to get the effect you desire, so you don't need to be too focused on getting it 100% realistic.

Color wise, don't go for the monotone look ('Grey clothes? Darker grey shadows!' logic). Play around with colors a bit, experiment with cool and warm colors in your shadows, highlights, etc, based on the setting of the enviro and character. The values is also very limited since you started from a white bg (a common problem in animu drawings), so try learning about utilizing values more.

are too long, and i honestly couldn't tell before, i guess that's a problem on its own, i am not as familiar with
the human body as i should. About the color, i tried not to use just gray, and picked something like a dark washed out
green, but yeah my values are weak as i haven't really studied anything about color or value. So far i've only studied about
perspective gesture some anatomy. Anyway thanks a lot, i have lots to learn.

from experience man, I can tell you, charge more than you think you should. Now, I'm not at the level yet where I'm doing commissions, but I was in your place a couple years ago with wondering how to price what I do freelance at, which is structural inspections.

At first I charged by the hour, and I got faggots that called me out for only spending 30 minutes inspecting and then told me about how long I must have spent writing the report and still charged them $200, boo hoo hoo, and they didn't want to pay me.

Then I charged a flat rate. I had no idea wtf I was doing and set it at $150 and I got tons of work. So I kept increasing it until now I'm at $350 and I haven't really turned off many clients because of it, and the additional income I get from the ones who do contract me make up for the ones I lose. I feel like I wasted a lot of potential earnings when I was charging too little.

I don' t know what the typical price for a commission is, but I know what I would do if I were in your place. I'd look at what other artists are charging, and regardless of talent, I'd make sure I was on the high end of that range.

This doesn't work if you are just doing general commissions. You probably need to start lower than what you deserve if you are unknown, work up some following at a lower pricepoint so you get a lot of commissions, then crank up prices until your 'supply' (aka. how much work you want to do) meets the demand. Just like any business you will need some promotion at the start so doing some fanart will probably help you gather a lot of traction if you are good at painting and net you a ton of commissions. This is especially helpful if you want to establish a higher pricepoint from the getgo

>> No.1641558

just like most people don't really have an idea of what a typical structural engineer charges for his time, i think most of the weebs that want people to draw their fetishes and waifus don't have a grasp on what an artist's fee should be as a function of their skill. i gather this by looking at the god awful stuff people actually pay for on DA.

what i mean is, if you charge more, it makes ignorant people think, "oh, I'm getting some quality stuff because it's costly," rather than "hey, i think he's overcharging me. his skills aren't in line with this price point." Assuming you're not an absolute bottom-tier symbol-drawing noob, which this guy obviously isn't.

>ton of commissions
I agree getting followers is crucial, and i agree fanart is a good way to get them hooked, but making your prices low just to get more volume is just a recipe for burning yourself out. I'd rather have fewer clients that pay more than a ton of them who pay peanuts.

or i may just be wrong and engineering is so totally unrelated that what I learned can't apply. I accept this as a possibility.

Not to be insulting, but you need to work on the basics.
The image is very flat, and there's no sense of depth or coherence. The legs aren't really at the same angle as the rest of the body, and the clothes look a bit like random sheets of paper strapped to her body. Remember, clothes have thickness to them. You also need to work on the face. The iris is way too large. Even in anime style, the iris should never cover more than half the area of the visible part of the eye, unless you're making very specific expressions. Find an artist you like who does varied expressions and try to replicate it.

I strongly suggest spending a few months working on gesture drawing. It really is the best way to both learn anatomy and gain a sense of depth. Also, Loomis.

you just do it because you see other artist do it and copy mindlessly, study the human body more.
Now, understand that i am not giving you a specific critic about your drawing because there is nothing
specific to fix,the whole thing suffers from little to no understanding of how light works, bad anatomy
and a very stiff gesture. Face could work if the teeth weren't coming out from the upper lip.

Both can be good if done right, it's a matter of taste at that point. Just decide what you like best and go in that
direction. On another note, i think that there is something wrong with her skeleton, why is her torso almost
one head away from her neck? it's like she is hiding a rugby ball under her shirt.

amateur graphic designer here, that font and your color choice is terrible for what you are doing

that font creates far too much space between lines and words and frankly looks like ass. For something just plain promotional like this, go with a basic font. helvatica, calibri, baskerville, bauer, etc

also those boxes, fucking lose them, stick to one background color, and if you need a box, use it around the images only to make sure they stand out if they don't, and that's only if necessary, really, lose the fucking boxes

The entire area from Kneesock's deltoid to her mid thigh is all the same value and thus looks flat, like it's all pressed against glass.

Main font choice is fine, imo but you need to fix the kerning, badly.

Line up all the titles ("information" is too high)
I'd suggest to change the COMMISSIONS title font cause it's ugly.

Push the price title and # together. They're too far a part and they bleed beyond the border created by your images.

What the fuck is going on with the boxes at the bottom? Also, that dead space on the bottom right... Do something about it.
