Nude reference and concept for a character.

Trying to start coloring, apologies for the bad scanning job, it's still in my porn sketchbook so I had to reposition it to show the left figure. Don't know if I should replace my scanner for a bigger one.

Worked on right figure last night, spent today doing the right. Also, the sclera on the right are supposed to be colored in red, though I wish it came out less muddy.

Well, her skin is supposed to have a grey complexion, so that's why it's all shaded in, but how can I make it less flat?

Also, the faces aren't supposed to be uber realistic if that's what you mean by "symbols", trying to develop a style where it's 90% realistic and 10% cartoony.

'vary' as in describe the forms via the direction and weight of the hatching. you can have the linework flow along the forms, or you can hatch uniformly but rely on value variation to define your forms (this is more difficult)

Her ribs shouldn't be that apparent. Your shading is currently being screwed over by the weight of your linework; using a softer pencil and using fewer lines to describe contours will help solve that.

the difference, i feel, with actually dancing or whatever and watching people dance is you can actually feel the torque of your own muscles. then when you watch people dance later you have a better understanding of the forces, and you can emphasis/exaggerate them in your work.

i wouldn't go around to everyone and say 'you must dance to draw!' it just seems as though this particular fellow doesn't 'feel' [vilppu style] the forces in the torso.

if he was just one of those 'arms connected to a granite block' types i wouldn't of mentioned it. but as he does squash and stretch the torso it would pay him[or her i guess] to do it right instead of just following the line.

if you want to stop yourself shading you should get a black pastel pencil, as the shading doesn't look too good but the lines rape graphite.

but as you like shading you might want to get a set of watercolours, your drawings seem small, and watercolour washes [ relatively dry washes, which seems a bit paradoxical but ain't] are well suited to quickly add some nice tones to that sort of thing.

try doing gestures with a big charcoal stick, or on its flat side so you can get used to thinking of the masses rather then contour. using finer media like pens and pencils make you want to do outlines, which isn't great for learning gesture

no ,i'm not the person who posted it. but it's charcoal [or conte maybe].. and obviously hatching isn't the default for charcoal.

the beautiful thing about charcoal is that you can do whatever you want with it, and it's good to experiment. smudging can be used well. hatching is actually harder than smudging to do well with softer charcoal.

i agree it wasn't successful here but, 'don't smudge' is the wrong response, i think 'look at how other artists use smudging and other mark making techniques.'..or..this is fine:

hatching > smudging
i did smudge the shit out of that drawing and i do agree the values are quite off, it's definatly something i need to work on

i have never tried hatching to achieve values before in a sketch so i can't comment on its merits so ill suffice to say that ill look into it as a technique.

as for the drawing itself its about 90% pencil and only for some parts of the hair did i use charcoal.

thanks for your response

>> No.1640038

again different person. my point is that you were wrong. charcoal =/= graphite. smudging can be the easiest way to make lighter tones with charcoal.

instead of trying to enforce rules you don't understand you should be drawing. see how that can go both ways? that's why it's called an irrelevancy.

now be more civil, this is a sketch book thread, not a filthy draw thread.

it's a simple kind of system.

there are tones, which are separated by steps.and also transitions.

tones are the values, steps are the gaps between.

in good paintings/drawings the steps are usually equal.

usually for a drawing people will use a pretty simple arrangement.

the simplest is 1 highlight, 1 midtone and one shadow tone.

but most people use something more like 1 highlight, 2 midtones and 2 shadow tones.

a transition is the 'blending', the way one tone leads into another, it could be a hard transition or a smooth soft one etc. there are heaps of ways to do it. similar to edges. this is where you get the extra tones that control the subtle descriptions of the form, where something curves slowly around or changes at a sharp angle for instance.

um, and i think that's it basically. there are innumerable variations though obviously, and lots more advanced stuff, local value etc.

there's a couple [many] places where you'd of been better off using a thinner or lighter line.

your values need a little bit more work, you do a good job of setting up a local value from face to face but then you only really use maybe 1 or 2 values and a highlight. if you could get more in there that would help a lot. might be tricky if you're working from photos though. you really want a much more subtle shift. i hate to say it but you might want to slow down, do fewer faces with more time spent layering the shading.

good drawing overall though.

Hey man thanks for bringing some diversity to the board. Just draw what you find appealing. Whenever you lack inspiration, try doing studies of other people's art, like, copy their work that you like. I'm not saying claim it's your original drawing, but just do it for your own sake. Look through or start a folder of drawings or paintings that you find appealing, and just go to town trying to copy their technique. I find it really helps me develop a style that I personally enjoy, and also inspires me to draw other original works.

although cartoony and amateurish, there are actually some strong elements here, mainly 2d stuff, good curves not a bad line etc. you have potential i think.

if you're new here just remember /ic/ is filled to the brim with frustrated losers, and their advice often comes from a place of malice and misinformation. basically if it's not a red-line, don't take it seriously.

you have to watch where you put the mouth, for some reason there is a tendency to put it about half-way between the bottom of the chin and the nose. usually in reality it's much closer to the nose than that, but it moves up and down a lot depending on expression.

I don't think blending will make it less symbolish. Its about construction and linework, shading comes after. You have to draw shapes, not your idea of an eye or a mouth, like you're doing now.

I always found it weird. On the one hand, you are being told to draw what you see, and not what you think you see (that's an eye, I know how to draw an eye), on the other hand, there are just so many eye tutorials. How should I approach those tutorials then?

The best course of action would be to study anatomy and structure and draw the picture again. She's kinda wonky and cardboard looking, particularly the arms, legs and collar bones.
If you just want to finish the picture anyway, I guess fix her legs. She looks like she's floating because her legs aren't under her.
