- Perspective is right off. The floor and ceiling don't converge to a common vanishing point. I don't think we should be able to see the underside of her ringlets from the height we're implied to be viewing.
- Poor foreshortening.

>you mean the background ?
no, i mean the foreground.

it looks like you tried to render it properly for a little bit before you gave up and started making ugly hatching with your brush.

if this was a speed painting i could sort of forgive that..but not really. there would've been various other ways to simplify the foreground than flattening it out. the background suffers from similar problems with the form. for example, at the area that cars toward the left of the figure, you used a textured brush to create a vague oval instead of blocking out that ground plane and thinking about the perspective. those hill shapes could've used more overlapping too.

I would like it a lot better if her back was bent. There's all kind of movement and flow and shit in the rest, but the focal point where you think there would be something happening doesn't really look like much. I don't get an explosion vibe from the source of the backsplosion at all.

maybe that's what you meant by torque but really it would look better that way

thanks for the feedback! I don't mean this to be a cop out response but maybe if I give you some background it will help. I'm making this painting for my girlfriend who had bad scoliosis. She had surgery to correct it which involved putting a steel rod in her spine to help straighten it and now has a long scar that runs down her back. Since the girl depicted is supposed to be her, I wanted to keep the back fairly rigid.

Perhaps the file is poorly named as well, the backsplosion is supposed to be less like an explosion and more like light seeping through a crack or under a door. Does it give that kind of vibe?

I can certainly fix the hair though, I thought I made it look like she was grabbing a handful of hair, but I guess it doesn't to the outside eye. Admittedly I didn't really know what to do with that hand, but I wasn't trying to hide it either. Any suggestions?

It makes more sense now. As someone else who suffered scoliosis, it's pretty sweet. I think that the way the light is so bright still far from her back is what gives it the "bursting from her back" feeling rather than the "seeping light" feeling, which is what makes the rigid spine feel so conflicted. Maybe experiment with toning down the brightness of the light a little more as it leaves her back.

As for the hair, have a super shitty 10 second mouse drawing that hopefully helps. Unless her hair is supposed to be super super dense or she's not supposed to be holding on to it very much at all, the shape you have it in now as it comes into and from her hand feels wrong

that bright green is too much of an attentiongrabber, this is bad since that blue/green dog-thingy isn't very interesting to look at. it also makes the whole dynamic of the image unbalanced imo.

think about where you want the focus of the piece to be. think of other ways of pushing the piece instead of poppy colors. for example think of interesting light-enviroments and such.

you should start thinking about the background too.

Hello, i need some help coloring some objects i've drawn as of late. Hopefully someone here can give me a few pointers on how to draw metallic bronze/brass totems with intricate patterns on them.

I'm trying to color these 2 pics i've drawn;
http://oi41.tinypic.com/2ivyby9.jpg
http://oi40.tinypic.com/24fzh40.jpg

With colors that relate to the colors of this glove.
http://oi40.tinypic.com/2zs8xgn.jpg

But no matter how long i spend staring at pictures of metal pipes and rods i simply can't get the pipe-like shading right.

Yep, it's mostly experience, refining technique, learning shortcuts, etc.

Careful with those values, your pic is a lot lighter than the ref. Looking at a full-sized image too long gives you tunnel vision and you can trick yourself into thinking your proportions, values, orientation etc is all correct, so sometimes it's good to use a thumbnail image to spot the main issues.

Everything else looks fairly solid though. Maybe pay a bit more attention to the calves.

1 - Distance from eye to hairline has been increased
2 - Angle of neck has been changed (you already know about the ear)
3 - Pay attention to dat dere negative space
4 - Nose seems smaller, philtrum length has been increased
5 - You made the mouth narrower. The bright white teeth add to the impression that she's tense, change this to a light/mid grey.

>>1630828
Yeah, I'd definitely use guidelines. Use the vertical axis of the head to check the features are equally spaced and correctly oriented, find relationships like distances between features, spot angles, use negative space. Use whatever helps you.

(Oh yeah, I think I put my finger on what's weird about your girl's head - I'd be willing to bet her hair has more volume when she's not wearing the mask.)

>>1630806
>Got no clue what I'm doing wrong. Mouth? Eyes? Everything?
it's kind of a minor thing, but i think what he's referring to is that the eyebrows in the drawing are closer together, maker her look like she's stressed out. also, you pushed her chin farther than in the ref.

>I don't know how to continue.
after you fix the parts where your proportions are whacked. like the ears, eyes, top of head all being too small, and some shadow shapes that aren't quite right, just go over it and refine your edges.

When you say "sucks so badly", are you looking for positive reinforcement? You wont find that here. Why are you posting something if you know that it's bad with only the intention of showing it off as bad. If you want help, then just ask for it. Negativity only gets met with more negativity. This isn't a hugbox. It's an art and critique board. If you're going to keep that attitude, then go to deviantart. Otherwise, you can just ask for help here.

The sketchy linework isn't working with the size of the figures. You should either clean up your lines, or draw the figures larger. If you're stylizing the figures with the lengths of the necks it's kind of working. A lighting scheme would help the picture pop out a bit more and look less flat.
