Hey /ic/, its been a long ass time since I stopped drawing, but I recently got a new job that gives me a tonne of time to doodle while at work.
Now, I've gotten really rusty over the years, but I'm completely self taught, so I'm sure there are a few things you guys can see that I obviously suck at.

Aside from having a decent Camera, I know I need a better camera, or a scanner or something, but I just moved to a new city and need to get settled in before buying that shit

I've been really focused on getting better with shading, but I feel kind of limited having only a #2 pencil and some pens

I do a lot of faces, I don't like to just draw faces though, I like to try and capture a 'feeling' into a sort of impossible expression

Also, here is a wizard that you can barely see due to a lack of pen being used in his creation.

A lot of people seem to tell me that the faces I draw remind them of Tiki masks

Don't worry man, I've been on and off of /ic/ since 2006, I know how it works here.
I'd honestly be more offended if no one took the time to hop in this thread just to red-line my worst shit, tell me I suck, then leave a link to Vilppu before he runs off to do it again.

Although, I haven't been on /ic/ in years, as you can probably tell from the state of my doodles, so I'm sure what you guys are like these days

I'm really quite upset that my camera is so shitty though, I was hoping to get some feedback on some new things I was trying out on some of these drawings.
>>1628357
This one in particular, I tried a new speckled method for shading and I think it helped make a nice smooth transition from the lights to darks which I usually seem to have a hard time pulling off.

But you guys can't really see anything as far as details go, so I doubt I'll be able to explain what I did or ask for tips for next time.

Hi op, I'm posting in /ic/ for the first time, but it deserves to be said that you apparently have some talent.
Your doodles are good and you could probably make money with your skills.

All you could do is refine what you already know, and perhaps get a sketchpad without lines, I used to always draw on lined paper too.

Thanks for making this thread anon.

OP here, I guess I should have also mentioned that I've never studied still life for more than just the very basics, I've always wanted to be an animator, so many of the books I've read have been more about how to animate, rather than draw one really nice picture. So I feel like I keep hitting this brick wall in my drawings, I know how to draw things so that they flow nicely when put in motion, and how to (for the most part) keep the drawings between frames consistent.
But as a result, I feel that I can't do anything as a single piece that looks anywhere as good as my other stuff does in motion.

>>1628391
Hi, weird that you're an animation enthusiast as that's what I studied for a degree.
You definitely have the artistic aptitude in your doodles to make some interesting footage, or whatever else you can think of.

But I would always try to keep animating and 'drawings for creating drawings' separate, to an extent.

Doodling is a non-linear practice in essence, whereas animation is a collected linear process that requires the utmost contemplation. You need to have some clear pipeline in mind when producing animation, otherwise you'll end up quadrupling your workload and going mad.

Maybe you should establish a pre-visualisation phase beforehand.

Are you a traditionalist?

>Are you a traditionalist?
Of course, animation just isn't animation unless its hand drawn, preferably on paper (or cells, you know what I mean anyway)

Yes, I think that I understand what you mean by cells (frames right?)

In any case, traditional 2D animation is almost a dying art, it's fantastic that you've trained yourself to learn about its processes.

I'm not sure what you've read up on in your studies, but I'd highly recommend the Richard Williams masterclass 'the animators survival kit's it's a fantastic resource that all of my tutors really encouraged us to learn.

Good luck man

I haven't actually read that book yet, looks like at the very least it will be great reference material.

And yeah, its really upsetting that traditional animation is such a dying art these days, when I was younger, there were so many great single season animated shows popping up everywhere, that I couldn't help dreaming of one day having my own cult classic show just like those ones.

I'm actually working towards getting a Psychology and Animation degree in the near future, my thesis is going to be about bridging the gaps between psychology and animation, and really using it as a more emotional medium.
I hopefully I'll be able to finish this short I've been working on eventually, I really miss that existential depressing vibe from all of the animation that was coming from young adults in the late 80's early 90's

Awesome, you sound like a bright spark, I can see it being beneficial to your style. Hopefully your project gets finished but even if it turns out badly, you can get lots of useful data from the failings.

After you check out the Richard Williams book (there's also an exceptional dvd lecture series of 'the animators survival kit' which is unparalleled in my opinion.

Also check out some Preston Blair, he was the main influence Of animator John K whom created the ren&stimpy show. Lots of Preston's work reinforces the principles covered by RW.

You have fun now, and remember to keep doodling, you can't teach doodling really, and you're great at it.

Sounds like an interesting project OP. You should start a blog or something for your doodles. Of course you can always improve things like your lines and crosshatching technique but you already have good ideas which is probably harder to learn than just technique.

>> No.1628446

>>1628444
>things like your lines and crosshatching technique
I definitely do need to work on these things, my line thickness is always way too varied and inconsistent, and I need to get better at consistently parallel crosshatches, I've started shading with dots lately though which I'm finding a lot easier, and I really like the effect it gives from a moderate distance
