The horizontal line I drew on both pictures originates from her armpit, you can easily see where certain parts of her body arnt quite where they're supposed to be. You can do simple checks like this by putting a ruler on your screen and check intersecting points.

Also your values arn't consistent with the reference. Check the ref in black in white, to check your values easily.

good, keep filling up those sketchbooks.

but you are too aimless.
try to dedicate single pages to certain topics you are weak at. like value, expression, gesture, or specific asnatomical features you are weak at. you can also challenge yourself with angles you are weak at.

you are already doing that to an extent, but you should try to be more organized. think of the sketchbook like a notebook. don't be afraid to write down notes and explainations from time to time.

well, the main point is: keep a tidy sketchbook, be aware of what problems/topicyou are trying to work on at the moment so that you can eliminate them.

>> No.1611004

>>1610992
Yeah, I do those though I need to do more challenging angles.

I'm really messy in sketch with stuff overlapping each other, I don't think I'll try to be more organized for now, maybe in the near future but I'll start trying to make jotting down notes a habit since I'm currently trying to learn design language as well.

Thanks for the advice.

Here it is again. I worked on the anatomy of the male figure. For the right figure I am trying to develop the perfect Amazon without trying to make her too ridiculous (before you point out the balloon tits, I am perfectly aware of the muscles=/=big breasts paradigm. I'll make it an artistic liberty, or better yet: MUH STYLE.)

>> No.1615564

>>1615483
Nice. Good effort. However,

- try not to use harsh outlines around features like the eyes, lips and hair. You'll know where the lips stops and the cheek starts because there'll be a change in tone. You don't need a black outline.
- Easy with those blending stumps hombre. They're fun to use but sometimes less is more. With a light-skinned subject like that you'd expect to see the lightest parts of the face remain white.
- To get areas of dark grey or black, like the hat band, don't just pull out your darkest pencil and start scrubbing. Rather than using pressure try underlaying a layer of say 2H first, this will help "receive" the 4B/6B/whatever. When using the dark pencils, build up with multiple layers of tight, light hatching rather than one furious pass at maximum pressure.
- Try using a technique like this: http://youtu.be/YcYdizSG4l4 for the hair.

You're drawing the contour, any gesture that's in those 2 is happening almost by accident.

Watch prokos gesture videos and vilppu videos and maybe read vilppus drawing manual.

I had a problem letting go of drawing the contours in the beginning, what helped me was to just draw really short gestures (30 seconds) since then you really don't have time for details or contour, which forces you to consider the figure as a whole more.
Just keep in mind that with a 30 sec gesture it's not about getting down as much as possible but "describing" the motion.

Took me months as well to get any real improvement or understanding, so despite frustration keep your nose to the grindstone.

The shadow cast by her nose should be way darker. But I wasn't concerned with getting the values right, necessarily. He's correct in that the value relationships are too bright

However, I was focused on separating the image into roughly three values and emphasize myself to use the paper as the midtone. That's all the exercise was. well here's a quick somewhat warm up sketch I did to try and get drawing again. I don't think this exactly counts as a "sketchbook" but I often use digital canvases to practice. Trying to work more proportions, have written out some notes on skull to rest of the body proportions.

I know for a fact that I've overlooked some things, but reason I'm bringing it here is so someone can help me by pointing those things out. I've been staring at it, zoomed out and flipped the canvas around. So far I notice that the head and neck might be a little large compared to everything else. I think I put too much focus on the head and caught myself on the fence between more realistic and more cartoony as far as proportions go. Cartoony necks are usually thinner. Perhaps I should trust my gestures more? Maybe I got too caught up on one part? What can I keep in mind for the next sketch?

I guess first thing I should draw bigger. this is only a small corner on a canvas I intend to fill with other gestures and sketches. Help and pointing things out would be much appreciated

okay. your work shows a very obvious lack of training and is, for lack of a better word, child-like. there's not much criticism that can be given for something that's just so overall poor. everything needs to be fixed. i really recommend starting with some basic tutorials so you can learn how to begin drawing altogether before you start seeking artists' criticism for improvement. if you're just looking for some kind of easy shortcut or something so you can instantly be better, then art probably isn't for you.

Other than that, just look at some good dragon art/real life reptiles and add elements from them into your dragons.

after I've started drawing her I discovered /ic/ and, even thogh my work is lightyears away from yours, some real but not discouraging criticsm would be great to prevent me from going in the completly wrong direction.
it doesn't look right, something feels very off, but I can't figure out why.

a lot of things aren't quite where they're supposed to be.

Here I just move some parts of her face to where they're at in the picture.

look at the distance between objects on your drawing, from her left eye to her hair is about double what it should be, and the distance from the same eye to the nose is also longer then it should be.

I move her eyebrow up and her eye closer in, made her whole face shorter and brought the hair in on the right side.

To be honest brah you really need to start over.

value is relative, you need to add a background and the shirt etc if you hope to get them right.

if you insist on doing this and giving it to her, I would try to get away with an ink piece with as few lines as possible, with swathes of tone for the hair/shirt/bk etc.

I don't know what it is, but sometimes when I go from drawing to rendering, I totally lose all the planes and end up feeling my way through the rest of it. I don't know if it's a confidence issue or what. This jolie drawing is like a prime example. I had everything mapped out, then I started values and it's like everything went 'poof'. It looked great as just lines. In the red watercolor drawing I was much more at ease for whatever reason.

that happens to me while painting, i set it up/draw the base then everything goes out the window while I get tied up figuring out the physicality of the media/color value texture etc.

just try to focus on the plane you are defining. every stroke should be made for a reason. either it is helping define form/drive viewers eye, set tone or a combination of the above.

if this shit was easy everybody would be doing it.

Nice general transitions from light to dark, and cool shading in general. However your actual focus on light and shadow is a bit.... not noticeable. See the highlight on the head? Where is that light everywhere else? Also, your symmetry is a bit awkwardly off. You could try balancing that by moving things around. Also is it just me or does that armor seem a bit impossible, and maybe even floaty at certain points

Still tho, you have a generally clean style that's pretty cool. The armor is a nice concept to say the least. Though actually the helmet seems way more spiky than anything else.

two things

1. the manner in which the arms are drawn look like they are bolted on (two separate pieces) I doubt this is what you were going for

2. the weapon weighs at least 7 pounds, and the way your guy is standing is a weak stance, whatever he hits, or doesn't hit from that swing is going to throw him off so much.

hope that helps

Proportions and gesture nigger. Better learn it.
Also, the upper body seems to have some motion going on, but the legs are straight and stiff. Imagine yourself handling and swinging a large and heavy axe; would your legs be like that?

Some thought are needed before you put the pencil on the paper, or at least while you're sketching midway. Always relate to real life and logic, and if else fails, there's always reference online which is handy.

You also need to discipline your lines and tones more. Hatch cleanly, and control the hatches to get the values that you want.

One way to practice this is to take a scrap paper and just do line hatches all over the paper, with consistent space in between the lines. Use your arm and shoulders. Vary the line length and the space inbetween the lines. Do it daily and you will see an increase in quality of your hatching.

Lastly, look for good pencil artists to draw inspiration from. I'll drop a few; Joao Ruas, Wes Burt, Paul Calle. If you wanna be Min Yum, you should master these first.

really weirdly disproportioned, lines are sloppy. Back right leg (in the background) is messed up, horns bulg out and get skinny randomly, no real sense of form there. The structure of the wings is hard to understand because of that weird triangle thing that has one point at where the body meets the wing and where that wing horn sits on the wing. The tail is creepily skinny.

But still, cool head. It's just your anatomy's all wonky. Maybe go back to gestures for a bit, then study types of anatomy/forms of this shit you're drawing.
