First of all those lines are way to scratchy. Not saying they have to be perfect for a scratch but you're basically trying to create thickness by going back and forth like a maniac. Stop that.
Another thing, you're working almost entire in outline, especially on the body. Just do cross contours and segmentation, forget about the outlines, you want to show the volume, not the outline.
Anatomy-wise, again you need to focus way more on the volumes of the body instead of the body's outline. There are no muscles or fat to be seen anywhere, not even a basic set of primitive volumes, cubes, spheres, cones, anything.
You should draw your next pic WITHOUT outlines. Use only cross-contours, intersection, primitives, anything but those damn outlines.
And that pose just calls for a stronger more coherent curve to go from the toes all the way to the head, a real arch in the back. It/He's pulling her hair for heaven's sake, why would her back be almost straight? There's no force or power to be felt at all.
Overall you really need to focus on the fundamentals and start using your drawing to communicate shapes in 3D space, not lines on a paper.

Yeah you are letting the construction hinder you by making it more important than other things such at 2d relationships and your value pattern.

Use a simpler construction and don't shade it based on the construction you put down, shade it based on the main forms and how it looks in your reference.

You are overstating many things because of the construction--this applies not only to your shadows, but also to contours. The far edge of her face is way to lumpy...it is likely much more simple than that.

Remember to keep it SIMPLE. Erase out your construction lines too if they are getting in the way of the image (as they currently are).

This guy >>1612720 is right. Think of the main forms and their volumes, and then how they relate.

With your linework, it is okay to go over the same line more than once, but make the lines longer so it flows over that whole area. Do not make one flowing line by placing a hundred short choppy marks.

Anyways, here is a quick construction showing how cross contour lines show the volume. I also put the three main masses of the human in blue, so you can be aware of their volume and how they relate.

I've been familiar with you drawing monsters for a while, now. I never bothered to ask until now - what are you inspired by, what's your thought processing when you're coming up with them?

As for me, didn't get a good reception on this guy, but fortunately I'm not made of glass. Even more fortunate, a few little breakthroughs built up to what I feel are the ideas I had for the character being more clearly portrayed in the design. Bigger hands fitting for displays of strength, black cloth laced with gold to create interest, along with slashed upper sleeves and an undone button to fit in with an earlier design change that gave him frayed hairs. I think this is as far as I can take it without adding clutter, unless anyone has any other ideas.

Cool image, but it lacks a bit of punch. You can play up the values and saturation more. Basically you have this creepy thing coming out of the shadows of a cave, so make the shadows darker. And you have this gold material headdress, so focus on getting some better material differentiation. I just took a soft brush on an overlay layer and then did a touch of painting ontop on a regular layer.

Btw I do like this guy a lot! I think in this rendition the face is a bit flat, as in, it looks like a 2d image imposed onto an angled 3d plane. Maybe that's the look you're going for?

I also think that since this character looks like you're designing him for a comic or an animation, he will shine the most when moving. Maybe you'll get a better reaction in that light?

Another thing to remember is that in your drawing all your lines were the same width. The drawing you posted as your goal used varying widths. You'll see in the girl drawing that the outline is thicker and inner details are thicker. There are other rules about which lines should be thinner and which thicker. I think it's scott robertson who has lineweight tutorials on youtube. And I think teal did a teal-line for some guy explaining it once.

How hard is it to make a new layer, use the elliptical marquee tool to make a circle, color it light yellow, and gaussian blur the edges to push it back in space.... just sayin.
Otherwise not bad in terms of how you thought about the forms being lit from a low angle. I would push the contrast even more. There's no area especially in the figure where there are extreme contrasts of dark and light, its all in a middle ground of value. The ground seems flat but a lot of the rocks you painted are all sitting at weird angles. And those feet, blarg. You got the hands but ditched out on the feet.

It would be nice if somebody could help with the proportions of the arms (especially the deltoids), the shape of the pectoral area and the upper leg muscles before I get to draw the actual thing.
Also, I'm want to draw him a hat and some pants (or maybe something else) like in the reference but I don't know what kind of shapes/texture should I apply.

Not just the bed, the ceiling is too low, the floor slants up and to the right, the door is too wide. Basically nothing is really in perspective or proportion with anything else. Construction, perspective, and proportion is essential when you are creating an interior environment.

>>1612744
Nice stance, decent stylization, more lighter tones to pop it from the background, its mid tones on gray right now so the pants are drawing more attention.

>>1612798
Proportions of head is off compared to the body, as well as other proportional issues. The arm pointing at the viewer is flat mostly because of shading and that there is no perspective on it. Your feet shapes aren't really accurate to the way feet work. And finally the entire pose is off balance. The amount of time you spend and materials you do or don't use do not make you a better or worse artist, how you use them does, and you still have work to do.

>>1613483
Nice start, decent values, and solid blocking in of shapes. I would push the values more on the central structure to create more focus and work on defining the bridge more, especially its reflection because that ain't right.

Dynamics doesn't just refer to 'actions' in the traditional sense, but having flow throughout the figure and an interesting gesture. Look up a contrapposto and how a stationary figure can be 'dynamic'. Pic related.

>at this stage of renderring Im not going to burn it and start over :/
Time already invested doesn't change the value of a piece. People judge the results, not the time stamp, to determine whether they like a piece or not. The pose in the redline isn't perfect, but it is clearly an improvement.

If you want to call this done and move on, I understand. However, if you spend a lot of time on a piece and later realize that something isn't working, don't be afraid to change it.

As an aside, consider thumbnail exploration before committing to a piece to avoid situations like this in the future:

I forgot to add:

There isn't anything inherently 'wrong' with a static figure, but depicting one as such is a choice. At the very least, you should have a specific reason for using a static figure, and at the same time it must work better (in terms of content, composition, flow, etc) than the dynamic alternative.

Welcome to /ic/ this isn't what you asked for, this isn't what you wanted.

Good luck figuring out how to draw ocean water on your own! No one here will help you.

(google search images of ocean water, find a scene you like and save it. Open it in your editor of choice. use color selector on the ocean scene and build up a palette of colors the artist used. You can find tons of different palettes this way. Now desaturate the ocean image and note the values the artist used. See if you can duplicate waves starting with monochrome.)

All these combined do make her look like >>1613555

And before anyone says it: yes, I understand this is supposed to be stylized, and many deviations from the norm are possible. However, everything is drawn fairly true to nature save for the proportions. Instead of a stylistic choice, it looks more like a mistake. The fact that the model's likeness varies a bit between heads furthers this looking like a mistake, or at the very least an oversight.

I'd like to see more room above the central figure's head. The cropping is a little tight and the figure separates the scene into two separate paintings. In that line of though, I'm also not the biggest fan of having him dead center on the canvas, but I don't know if your value groupings are final, what colors will be used, or what content the environment will provide - my opinion might change as this progresses.

Your preliminary drawings always seem great to me, but something goes wrong in the painting process and things take a turn for the worse - probably due to values, colors and brushwork. Have you been working on any of those? Do you ever do several value and color thumbnails before you begin painting?

Thanks, I'll try to draw sightly bigger hands next time.
The reason of why I haven't drawn the final pic yet is because I'm not sure about certain shapes of the muscles.
The head looks flat (which makes drawing a cap on it pretty hard) and the shoulders are too big. There's also something wrong with the pecs but I'm not sure what it is.
Also, it's impossible to draw the red scarf with that neck, so the Buddhist beads would be a good alternative but they look sorta strange.

This is really helpful, i think i get too caught up and into/inside the drawing after i start so now i'm realizing i need to step back and look at it as a whole more as i go along.

It's not impossible you just don't have the necessary internal visual library of the things you are attempting to convey and how they can/would/should sit on a frame. What I threw together is far from the ideal way of expressing it, but think about how far back the cap would have to sit to get over his eye ridges, think of it in three dimensional space. What is the angle of the brim? Could you use it to draw more focus to his eyes? Do you want a rounded cap or a more military style flat cap? With the more serious styling do you want to push his naval association? (dog tags, tattoos, etc) What other ways can a bandanna be wrapped around the neck besides the rolled up way in the ref? You aren't asking yourself the question you need to be asking and you are just assuming it won't work.

I'm more of a matte surface type of guy when it comes to armor I usually put off the crazy 0-10% value range for the final pass That color dodge and screen though

O right Umm I guess I can crit that image as I am an armor guy

Try to make sense of armor. Things looking cool is awesome, however there's a fine line between looking cool and making no sense.
Not gonna go into detail too much. Think of the helm Why is it split into sections(think why it make no sense). Youve got some biggass diablo horns which dont make sense with his body which is teeny weeny itsy bitsy. Giving the Idea that the helm would be a pain in the ass to hold up.

Other than that what makes armor somewhat difficult is 3d space and overall design complexity while staying in a reasonable area

at least thats some stuff that ive learned

Still getting around to the damn hipguards theyre a real pain in my ass

O another good rule is the law of three which I dont always do

Metal Leather Cloth
Cloth Skin Fur

Having three separate surfaces is good for later rendering to keep it interesting.

>> No.1614008

>>1613968

I've started trying to design warriors myself. What I did first was realize that armor can range from just cloth with a few leather patches and chainmail to entire metallic suits. History hasn't provided any rich examples to me, as there were trends were one army would style something and then others would adopt the same look (see: Hussars).

Depending on how fantastical you want it to be, a great way to spark inspiration is to look at an animal, a fish, or an insect, then imagine how those characteristics would translate to armor. It could be literal or you could make abstractions of those traits based on your view of them, what you think of that creature as being. For example, if you modeled a suit off a horse, you may give the helmet a comb that goes down to the back of their waist and an emphasis on the head and legs, and so on.

All criticism is useful, even if it's harsh. You would do well to put aside your feelings instead of wasting an opportunity to learn.

tried to take my study from >>1612239 and put her in a different pose with no reference to see how well I understand the pose and inventing my own lighting.

really like the feeling of it. What brush settings and layer mode are you using? I'm really having trouble layering colors.
