You lost some of the form in translation, but the values and textures look okay. The background's composition is really boring and it doesn't compliment the figure at all. Plan the figure with accuracy in mind before you paint it and rethink the background

The composition of that background is good. It has unity with the character in the splattered paint patterns. The color choice introduces a complimentary blue that balances out the red the warm reds and yellows. It also makes the image feel grounded, gives it depth and it flows with the figures gesture and orientation.

You're learning abbreviated conventions. Even Loomis knew he isn't the definitive source on those topics. He advocated people broaden their horizon and find things on their own. All you're doing is waving around forgotten outdated books living in nostalgia land.

Read Creative Illustration page 19 start at the "If I am going to give you information of value..."

From Eye of the Painter page 14
"Let us assemble a whole stock of knowledge gleaned from the past and add newer concepts, and in turn join these to the concepts that will come out of the future. Let us give art the benefit of the techniques of scientific exploration. The scientist does not throw away a theory until it has been proved false or valueless. To condemn the past because it is not part of the present would be as short-sighted as to stick only to the past for the sake of tradition. It would be short-sighted not to be alert to any new truth to add to our stock."

not all concept art is rough looking. and for that that is, making something rough looking describe something accurately enough for your art director to accept it, takes a tremendous amount of skill. you try imitating jaime jones lose style and see how well you can describe something.

Thanks for taking up the great mantle of "women-everywhere spokesperson".
I know how much of a challenge it must be to make up pseudo facts based on your subjective preferences and then allocate those facts to every woman on the planet, but I just wanted you to know that you're doing a great job and we all appreciate how difficult the work it is and how obnoxious it requires you to be.

Picture related, it's my personal bushes that I as a woman, do not style in this way at all. Because obviously we all know that women hate thick eyebrows. Because you said so.

btw wrinkly eyes and thick eyebrows does not count as legitimate critique. You're supposed to be pointing out errors in anatomy, lighting, colour technique etc., not your own personal preference towards facial grooming.

You can critique aesthetic quality; likeness (since he's referencing a real woman) and design choices can be up for criticism. The big eyebrows and wrinkly eyes might not be indicative of how she looks. They also might hurt the aesthetic quality of the picture by making it less pleasing to the eye.

Of course, you can argue "those are preferences relative to your being" so why critique at all? If someone determines something looks like X even though it actually looks like Y, can you really point it out as an error? Maybe to that person, they want it to look like X instead of Y.

Something I feel like I should add is in regards to the smoke. Next time you find yourself drawing it you ought to think about what smoke actually is, how it flows, what it's comprised of, how it's affecting by air currents etc.

It's tempting to think of it as a thick fuzzy cloud but try looking at plumes from cigarettes for example. It's smooth and flowing and transient.
Some good practice would be for you to revisit this piece and attempt the smoke whilst looking at it from a different angle.

Some good advice to try and remember when drawing is not to think in lines. If you look at the majority of pieces in this thread you'll probably notice that most are made up not of bold, stark lines but rather flowing splashes of colour. This is how you should draw your smoke.

I'm no expert but I heard a landscape should have a foreground, mid-ground and background. Yours has a very indistinct background and foreground.

Your rendering of the snow is quite bad, there are dirty/muddy splodges everywhere. Use refs of snow to get the effect you want. I'd suggest going for a dazzling snow look, using plenty of the white of the paper. Maybe some settled snow on tree stumps or fenceposts in the foreground to reinforce that this is snow we're looking at. And do something interesting with the background and sky.

I'm having trouble making the building not look like complete ass, is it a core design problem, or salvageable? Also, is there anyway I can push the grasses/plains farther in terms of detail, without it looking cheesy? Uh, I'm no expert, but the way you've done your fog makes it look more like a blur, which is making your painting look really muddy. The rendering of the ship isn't terrible, but I'd try and bring everythign to a more even level of polish so it looks a bit more level. Also, you don't seem to have a good grasp of color, I would reccomend working in grayscale for sometime until you understand values better, and then moving into color once you have the fundamentals down :)
