You realize a study is supposed to teach you something concrete and specific, that you can later apply to your own work, right? It's dumb to "study" things with no practical application just because you feel like copying a random photograph.

The reason people like to do figure studies here is because it teaches you all of those things you listed plus gesture, construction, perspective and anatomy.

Just paint with a hard brush with high opacity. Try unchecking the Transfer box in the brush panel. You can also at the very end go to Filter>Sharpen>Unsharpen Mask, and that will let you sharpen your image a fair bit and pull out some more texture. Most pros use it at the end of an image, especially for speedpaints and stuff since it makes it more crisp and finished looking.

You dildos are aware that you should use a reference photo as a reference, and not just try to become human Xerox machines, right?

Use OP's photo as a general reference and change the colors, angle, lighting etcetera to make it your own and show you understand what you are drawing.

You are a fucking idiot. The point of a study is to _study_ the reference. If you are changing everything about it, that just means there was nothing worthwhile to learn from it.

I'm all for thinking about what you are studying and making intelligent changes to it when you see fit to improve the overall image, but what you are saying is completely idiotic. Not that this ref is any good int he first place.

To be fair, he's partially right, it's good to do photo studies to the T sometimes but it's also good to use it in an applied way, that way rather than just mimicking what you see, you use it in a way you'll remember.

When doing a study, you aren't supposed to mimick what you see, you are supposed to understand what you see. If you change something as fundamental as the lighting, like that guy suggested, in an image that has pretty much nothing else going for it but the lighting, then you are no longer trying to understand and learn from the reference, you are just doodling something loosely based on a photograph.

With that said, studying that particular photo seems like a waste of time in general.

Well said anon.

Here's my interpretation of OP's picture. I decided not to be slavishly tied to the constraints of the subject matter. I used my judgment as an artist to change the angle, lighting, composition and subject to something I felt a deeper emotional connection with.

Pic related. Before any bigot criticises it, remember it's my style, so I'm objectively a great artist.

So weird! Never thought there's so much planning and thinking involved!
The math part was really interesting, because I never knew you could move the vanishing points closer by moving the construction lines from diagonal to making a line to the next square's farther corner.
Thanks for the insight!
