broccoli here, with another study. Like the last time, it seems that 500px wouldn't alow me to download the ref and 4chin is not letting me post the link. Stil, you can look up the ref by searching for "Alabaster by Marcin Wuu".
Anyway, I didn't stay close to the ref much, exceptfor her facial feature, the light was dull, and cold, appear to be tampered with a lot, also things like contrast, saturation,.... so I try to fix them up, change the color temperature, add a little bit of tone. there's no point with photo copying study anyway.
I think I did improve from the last time. let me know what you think and I'll keep that in mind to improve next time.
oh but of course, no body wouldn't know who I was, last time I did a monk .

hey guys I have a question. Often dave rapoza uses a rim light, to make the form pop out of the darkness. However i read that painters usually have a soft or lost edge where the figure fades in the background, to make the subject look like its coming to the viewer.

What is better ? Im guessing none is better and each applies to a different situation but its confusing.

Thanks !

>> No.1596796

>>1596792
A soft edge ties the subject to the background and keeps the focus on areas that are contrasting and sharp, and makes them appear even moreso and more interesting. The rimlight separates the subject from the background and helps define some planes or silhouettes that may have been lost in the shadows, as well as add visual interest. Your decision on which to use is very much on a case by case scenario and what you want to show. Typically soft edges and a melding of background and subject lends itself to mroe atmospheric and subtle paintings, whereas a rimlight is more in your face and has a punch/pop to it, so is often used in promotional artwork that is meant to grab your attention, or in the entertainment industry where everything is about flash and excitement. You don't often see rimlights in fine arts since their focus is different.

I do think about shapes and textures while doing studies from photos. Heck, ever since I got acquainted with Vilppu I try to feel the surface of anything I paint, I think that helped me tremendously in regards of rendering and achieving likeness.

I like the shape of the hair and the rudimentary metallic feel, especially in the upper frontal area. However the zone above the eyebrows is uneven, I also think you need to bump the contrast a bit more (more key highlights and darker values) This would do wonders to its sense of solidness.

I would recommend taking a time to look at some references.

I couldn't stand that book, back then its exercises and content seemed to interfere with things that I took for granted but that somehow worked for me. Like she was trying to aim her message only to those who had a really...really hard time with very basic stuff (ex: observing).

On the other hand, Vilppu's message matched really well the pre-conceived idea/workflow I had about drawing.

So I formally started with the Language of Drawing series, then I took Portrait Drawing by Wendon Blake.

Excuse the shitty paintover...but anyways, I tried to address a few issues.

The image is very warm feeling for a night scene, so I tried to bring in more of the cool moonlight and just cooler colours over all. I felt that the entire image was pretty monotonous in terms of value too, so I extended the value range both in the lights and darks (you seemed to stop at about 80 or 90% black, presumably because of your monitor).

Basically the image has two focuses-- the wolf and the guy. So you want to push those two aspects. I simplified the clouds and sky so the wold silhouette reads nicely against it and made the wold darker and with brighter eyes. The guy I brought more of that cool light onto and really emphasized the whiteness of his shirt/collar so you have a few crisp lighter shapes near his head.

I also added some stronger mist/fog to push the mood and creepiness factor.

You can probably simplify a lot of areas more than you have. Besides the fact that detailing every area is a bad idea, it is also a dark image and a night scene. If you ever observe things at night you will notice they tend to group into large masses, often with soft edges. Detail is nearly impossible to see, so there shouldn't be that level of texturework and detail.

Portraiture isn't that hard as long as you keep in mind the rule of thirds, key alignments and try to use values instead of lines you will get very decent results.

The book I mentioned is very easy to digest and a good starting point imho. After that one you could get The Artist's Complete Guide to Drawing the Head, which goes even further in terms of realism through the in-deep explanation of chiaroscuro.

bit of a nit-pick and a subjective one at that but if it were i, i would make sure some of the girl on the grounds skin is touching the dudes. you did it with all the other girls, but not with her. it makes her sit apart in the image a little, you can see it if you look at the thumb, she short of looks super-imposed onto the picture of the other people. i think the skin touch thing would help, but probably when the armour is shinier later it will tie her in anyway.

It looks like the shadows on her hoodie are a blue, not a grey.

Also pay more attention to the creases, they don't line up with the reference.

Why not try opening your ref over the top of the painting in a new layer then dropping the opacity to give you a clue where it's off? From eyeballing it I'd say the shape of the face and lines of the hoodie need more work.

you're right but it's better to think of it in terms of temperature, warm light cool shadow -- warm shadow, cool light.

otherwise you can get yourself in quandary trying to match up compliments, and wondering about how best to mix the local and stuff, and then on top of that there's normally a shift or some transparency or something which means using the true compliment makes the thing look weird.

best to imply KISS, or just don't think about the rule at all and use the real colour although that's not as effective with a photo reference.

The day I have a process is the day when pigs fly motorcycles

I start with a low saturation background usually pretty light and make some bigass stokes until I get some sorta mood going (image related I guess) From there I start sketching various silhouettes while trying to convey an image inside my head // .
(cont.)
Erm its usually either lineart or a silhouette it depends on how I want to approach an image. In this case a silhouette/lineart .

From there I usually start blocking in the light sources and gradually add in colors. I pump up the shadows saturation...usually //.

From there its usually just polishing or just mindlessly working on one part of the image. If I was going to finish this probably 5-8 hours of drawing probably depending on how polished I wanted it. Don't over render as it takes away from the substance of the image at least im starting to figure that out.

For this sketch I dunno exacts but around 30-50 mins

Also I encourage experimenting with how you approach an image finding something that fits you. There's alot of ways to approach images but its more or less left to you on how you want to do that. In my case I'm just figuring it out as I go along. Also known as staying away from other artists workflows.

>Also I encourage experimenting with how you approach an image finding something that fits you
I've been trying to figure this out for at least 6 months and I'm none the wiser. I still get drawn back to doing outlines and overly detailing my sketches as if I was trying to finish a traditional pencil drawing. I really have no process and I have never had one. I can't find a way I like, everything takes way too much time. The thing you spent 30-50 minutes would probably take me a closer to like 8-12 hours

I just have no idea how to paint and I can't seem to find any place to learn how to do so either. I've read a few books about it but I'm still none the wiser how to actually go about it in a way that focuses on the important stuff and doesn't take a hundred hours for a sketch

Oh, and thanks for the reply, very informative

Well as I've progressed i've sorta picked up ideas by simply glancing over other peoples images. In my case rendering/painting is pretty much the bulk of what I do.

So alot of the time if I find something I like ill do what you do spend a shit ton of time endlessly spending hours working on it. Eventually Ill get to a point where im simply repeating what I was doing an hour ago and I immediately stop working on it.

So in your situation that doesn't apply to myself since im more of an observational thinker

Honestly I would do some life studies if I were you. Fruits and fruits and I dunno fruits anything with strong color is nice to work off of.

O and thats another thing taking an image to finished especially when dealing with studies in my personal opinion I feel it merits no point. If you can render and observe half an apple and leave the other half completely empty its gtg in my book. Thats just me though.

Lastly toss what you think you know and walk blind. Every other image I change how I start working off it. If you dont experiment with what you're doing nothing will ever come of it. (dont take anything anyone says as fact either, what im saying can be observed as shit by many others)

And that image wouldve taken me 8-10 hours a year ago as well probably longer. Don't worry about time just paint ^-^.

Sorry about engrish I know I suck

>anything with strong color is nice to work off of
I don't think I know enough about colors to do anything with colors as of yet. And painting from reference seems only to subtract from my ability to draw from imagination which has gotten me kinda worried about doing more of that stuff. Sure my observational skills have gone up but my ability to come up with stuff from my head has had a massive decline. That was one of the reasons why I asked about your process

O okay

Imagination and technical skills are two sides of a coin

Umm for me its just been trial and error
If I find something I like I go with it.I put in my brain vault of sorts and save it for later. There's like two things I can tell you about imagination and that is... It developes over time and , If you want to jumpstart it because its lacking or just not there gather reference - If I were to draw an alien and come up with nothing I would probably google "deep sea life" Find interesting creatures and pick and choose off them. Dont copy them just take interesting parts- from there.Perhaps mash them together.

When It comes to armor ive drawn much of it that I can just sorta shit it out. Second nature at this point - back to the point of over time.

Life studies or photos are fine. If you really think you suck at color and or anything I would do some observational life studies. And then some observational photo studies. A study is a study so you really cant lose just try to intake as much information rather than zombie mode

I don't really know how to do life studies. It's not like I can drag my PC outside to draw and my room isn't very inspiring and I don't trust my eyes one bit when it comes to colors. And when drawing from imagination I have no idea what colors to use and how so I've been just sticking with greyscale

I mostly want to draw characters from video games and such so there's a lot of things I can take reference from but I definitely don't want to copy the crappy in-game models 1:1 so I have to use my imagination, which is suffering from doing photo studies. I can't approach a drawing from imagination the same way I approach a photo study. There are no angles or values in my mind that I can just try to emulate on the canvas and I can't fabricate a scene that accurately in my mind

Your way seems a bit more natural, trying to find the feel of the piece and such, that might help a bit so thank you. Still gotta figure out the painting part though, and the colors

I like it so far but it divides the page in half diagonally and makes a huge dead area. What should I put in it? His music in this time was mostly about sex, so whatever I put in there I'd like to fit that theme.

OK.... some of these critiques I wouldn't normally make because I'm all for straying from a reference pic, but since you included it I assume you are trying to stay close to it.

-The nose/mouth are too far to her left (our right).
-The neck/jawline is off as well, and you have reflected light form her hair hitting her jaw when I don't think there should be any light there.
- Then it just isn't even close to done. The hoodie looks like an amorphous blob, not a cotton hoodie. One of her eyes is covered by hair and you haven't even done the one remaining eye yet. The hair is in it's first stage (I hope), and you haven't yet included any of the leaves/ferns.
