But I've only been drawing for a week, so I was sort of okay with it, just trying to learn as much as I can from practice, understand and learn from the flaws pointed out in my work to fill in knowledge gaps and draw inspiration to do better, as well as indulge in resources offered, etc. Anything good about it? I'll start with anatomy: her nose is too long, bridge might be long, she has no joints in her arms, her right hand has only four fingers (presumably missing the pinky), what fingers ARE there are too short, hands seem smallish, her clavicles are fused, the viewer could take or leave the SCM, she has no pectorals, her gait is awkward, her posture is stiff, there's nothing to indicate why she's standing that way.

Couldn't agree with this even more than I already do. To make a point, imagine a still life with a table top and wall as the background; the subject of study a silver cup. At an atelier, the student would be instructed to paint everything around the cup; a couple of inches around the outline or so. This helps you to judge accurately because values and colors tend to be misread due to what is around them.

When I do portraits like this one, I always do it with just red first, then when I have a majority of it done, I take the drawing, make it black, and put it on toned paper. Once I do that, I will add the highlights to give it more depth and thicken lines or add more darks or whatever I see would add to the image. One of the layers on that file in the screenshot is my red drawing turned to the black version, while the rest is me adding layers for the highlights I put in, or for darker lines. I do the changes in small "batches" or layers so I can hide/change the opacity of them to see if it adds to the image or takes away from it. I also like to be able to see the progress of the drawing. I like the drawing to look really clean, so I will often use a shit load of layers. The original red one has around 40 so far.

Cool stuff man. I know you're working from photos that tend to be very bright and flattening, form wise, but have you tried to push the darks even darker so you can start pushing other forms like the roundness of the chin? Like, you have the top plane highlighted, but the bottom of the chin looks flat since there is no value change to show its roundness. If this is purely a style choice, it's super nice, but if you're studying value, don't be afraid to push it.

Okay so before I start doing anything I wanted to know how far away from my goal I am so I did this. My goal being able to paint fantasy characters from imagination. Obviously everything needs work, I have no idea how to approach hair and eyes yet for example (so ignore those for now) but I was wondering if you could give me a few pointers on the obvious beginner mistakes I do so I can try not to do them again

As you described about the hair and eyes problem, I think you are not thinking in forms yet.
Imagine the hair strands as the shell of a cylinder, the eyes are not just a circle but a sphere, a ball and then you start blocking them as they were a cylinder or a ball, then adding more details.
I am still really bad at figures and gesture so I can't help you with it...

I find hair to be much easier to do with pencil on paper for some reason. I do have some trouble putting volume into hair and making believable haircuts in general from imagination but as I said, I'm not worried about that just yet. Eyeballs are fine but I can't figure out eyelids at all and drawing them from reference before only confused me more so I've been avoiding the subject for a while. Pupils as well, they turn out creepy as fuck and I'm not quite sure often how they work from a side view on the surface of the eyeball

not him, but

-you draw very flat. you don't think about how your character looks in 3 dimensions. there's no planes on her head, her hair is flatted drawn behind her head, her arms are very close in so that you don't have to bother drawing them in space, etc
-you have a horrid sense of anatomy, and any parts that aren't seen just disappear with no effect on anything else. ie her right hand isn't holding the severed arm, the top of severed arm's fingers just vanish around the neck, etc
-the skirt is drawn completely wrong, we wouldn't be seeing the forms (shadows) of her legs.
-shitty gradients

I personally think it's pretty damn good. I agree it's flat, but that's typical of the anime style. (in b4 b-but his style!)

Only thing I agree with in your post is the skirt.

>the top of severed arm's fingers just vanish around the neck
Um, why would you expect the fingers to be pointing up where we could see them? The severed arm has no muscle control obviously, the fingers are limply hanging behind the palm.

The most glaring problem is that your light source and shadows don't make sense.
The sun is setting on the horizon, yet is making a 12'oclock shadow over the city, with a sunset the shadow of that ship would be stretching much further and would probably not even show up in this shot.
Even from a sketch perspective, there is only 1 definitive form change and that's between the side and bottom of the ship when you clearly wanted to do more complex shapes, you need to define your values with crisp, sharp lines, use the lasso tool if you're struggling.
The next big problem is that this is meant to be in a sunset yet the sky fades into red rather than a nice blue/purple, so the oranges that typically define an interesting sunset can't show up properly, go look at pictures of sunsets/sunrises.
Lastly that ship is much much closer to the camera than the city, there's no atmospheric fog on it as it reaches upward, and theres no bounce light hitting the underside either, the ship is probably half a mile away, while the town is several miles in the distance.

Don't go too much further with polishing this, you need to do some photo and landscape studies first.

You need to think about two things:
1) What is under the skirt, and how the folds of the skirt can define that. Are her legs straight? Is one pulling upward? Observe clothes in real life.
2) The material of the skirt. A skirt made of thinner, lighter material will have more folds. If it's a puffier, heavier skirt, it will have less.

Much worse, you lost all the dynamism of your first shot by shrinking the ship down, now you have this big ugly square of empty space in the left and the image is just dead.

You also destroyed all of the ships negative space and interesting planes and turned it into more or less a floating cube.
The fact that those giant stair things are bigger than your city also kills your composition, you need to think in size contrasts between the various areas of your picture, the city and ship now look like childrens toys.

Adding on to this, the horizon line and the city size were better in the first shot too, by raising the horizon line you lowered the cameras position in 3d space.
When the camera is high up in the air (say for example a helicopter), yet still below a hugeass object taking up 2/3rds of the screen it helps capture that sense of scale.

There's not a lot I can comment on from experience.

You feathered (some of?) the lines, rather than draw long, smooth, consistent strokes. Try drawing from the elbow if you're not confident in your linework, it'll improve your accuracy with practice.

The sword looks weird (I don't see the dildosword, personally), and I'm not too certain its positioning accounts well enough for the armor and mad traps that're back there. It also looks to be floating somewhat.

Sword's boring after the hilt, and just a lazy banana shape without any defining elements, like grooves or patterns in the metal.

Also, curse you (sans the actual cursing) for drawing a character whose visage is the spitting image of this one awful (mischievous and conniving) coworker I had a little under a year back.

To tell you the truth, I find the people who have achieved a higher level of ability, aren't that terrible in ego. You can't become a better person without failing and losing your ego many times.

I say you don't need to worry about his ego. And you know what we should celebrate the fact that a painter gets some attention on the front page of reddit. Gets acknowledged by a fellow peer. This should invigorate you, your wording reeks of jealousy, even if you aren't. But you too can be the guy that gets some attention on a mainstream website. And love from your peers.

Let him have a little ego. Let him have this moment and to have him build up some confidence. We don't always have to be mousey, meek, modest, self-deprecating, self-destructive. That next painting he works on, feel free to bring him down a level. But in this scenario, just give him his congratulations.

i think that's a terrible attitude and mentality. you should really put more effort into judging artist by their work and not much else

Abusive anon here again.
>Admittedly, no, I didn't use any references.
No kidding. The feathers look like leaves, or petals. The cat has too many visible toes. Please, for your own good, use reference, at least the first few times you draw something new.
>I though I handled at least that pretty well
Well, you tried, which is commendable, but it's not very effective. Why is the wing in front of the foreshortened paw, and yet smaller than the other wing? Anyway dude, at least you're drawing, which is more than can be said for half of /ic/. Keep it up.

They're not really shadows since they don't darken the subject. More like a bluish light source.

I like it though.

Kind of a German Expressionist vibe there. Nice.

It reads as her offering the chick a beer, not requesting another. Emphasize the lightness of an empty beer by having her hold it in a dainty thumb-and-forefinger grip, maybe have the can slightly crumpled as well/

I gave up on it before finishing those feathers. Had I finished it, they would've more closely ascribed the proper aesthetic. I'm on the same page with you though, I've actually just borrowed a book on drawing bird and wing anatomy from a local library.

>Too many visible toes
Yeah, I looked at that afterward.

>Why is the wing in front of the foreshortened paw?
It was actually when I'd taken a good look at that I gave up on the piece entirely, I know I screwed the pooch on that one. Those wings are in two different states though, one being open the other being folded outward only slightly. It should have gone behind the leg,, and probably have just been redone. But, well, polishing a turd, and all that. Messing with it further just felt discouraging. Thanks for following up on it with me, Anon, your throughput's appreciated (and logged).

It just depends on the person. I'm more tactile, so I like to work on paper first. The only disadvantage I can think of is that working on the computer might make a beginner think his piece looks better than it actually does.

I was a bit bored and decided to sketch somethin up. It's far beyond my current skill to take to a rendered finish due to knowledge gaps.

I think If I were to find a similar pose and an abundance of arms and hands I might be able to. I feel like I could learn alot taking this to a finished state.

>> No.1579394

Head's too big, the entire thing looks copy+pasted onto the figure; the face doesn't mesh well, which is partly due to it facing the viewer, which looks unnatural and clashes with the torso's perspective. Also, that model has hands, where're your figure's hands?
