>> No.1575343

this is a good site: http://livlily.blogspot.ca/
As for art books, theres preston blair's "cartoon animation" and walt stanchfields "drawn to life." I Hear "the illusion of life" is good though i've never read it. where are you studying op?

This, without a doubt the best book about 2D animation.

If you can grab the dvds as well, they're fantastic.

Buy it or find a torrent of the whole set.

Drawn to life is all you will ever need and I've seen animators in 2d and 3d call it the best book for animation.

The animation survival kit is more of a "tutorial" of animation useful for going over once or twice. Richard Williams was never an animator he was just an animators assistant he did inbetweens then went on to teach as if he was glen keen or something.

I'm an animator that just so happened to go on /ic/ at the right time.

I do 3d animation so I use maya, there are other 3d packages worth looking at but maya is the most animator friendly one. As you mention you're a 2d animator your best best is Adobe flash, Toon boom, digicel flipbook or Tv paint.

an old 2d animator that works at valve the games company swears by flipbook but animation skill is transferable from software/medium so whatever you like using go for it.

Heres a link to a series round of of Harry ( an online 2d animator and voice actor) he put together everything you need to get started in 2d animation in flash.

I only flicked by /ic/ because I don't thumbnail my shots and I reallllllly should start doing so.

Hmmm ye, he's a great friend of a friend of mine who got freelance jobs animating for fun even though he's an "elementary" teacher by education.

IIRC, the fact that he got those offers without art education convinced him that it wasn't necessary?

Best of luck to you anyhow.

I completely recommend-
The animator's survival kit
The illusion of life
Character animation crash course (Eric Goldberg)
'Drawn to life'
Also Vilppu has an old series purely on drawing for animation, so get that, and also check out Mike Matessi's books/videos

>Richard Williams was never an animator he was just an animators assistant he did inbetweens then went on to teach as if he was glen keen or something.

Are you fucking kidding? he did THOUSANDS of commercials over a 30 year period, AND short films AND the Thief and the Cobbler, Christmas Carol, Roger Rabbit, Raggedy Ann. He started his own studio as soon as he got into animation so he never went through inbetweening apart from when he was studying in his spare time. and he's still animating today at 80 years old. His short film "Circus Drawings" that he animated when he was 77 is incredible realistic hand drawn animation. He knows what he's talking about.
The great thing about animator's survival kit is that it's completely void of style and doesn't try to teach you to draw, it's pure animation.
>>1575416
Though I agree with you on the software here. I'd say Toonboom is better for vector stuff and Tv Paint is probably the best for fully inbetweened stuff. I've been using flipbook at the moment because you can colour so quickly with it, but it's no use for compositing or anything like that, I have to bring the levels into after effects.

Also a 2d animation student, here is what I have and recommend:

- Drawn to Life, both volumes (pure gold, its just a series of all the handouts given out to gold era Disney animators)

- Life Drawing for Animators (force is super important and once you understand it and move onto shape you will find its the basis of appealing design in all western animation)

- Richard Williams Survival Kit

These would be the essentials but if you can be more specific in your interests I can recommend more.

>> No.1576175

poor animation student here, i've searched everywhere for those volumes of drawn to life on the internet but all I could find is a pdf of a non-complete version of it. If anyone could point me towards a place I could download those volumes I would be eternally grateful.

>> No.1576202

>>1576175

There was a thread a couple months back looking specifically for them and the results were inconclusive.

I don't think there is any link but the pdf you a referring to is a pretty good start. You are essential missing out on stuff about inspiration and lifestyle as an artist.

Not an animation student and not OP.

But does anyone know what tools someone could use to do some paper and pencil animation.

Like how you can make a setup at home on the cheapy cheap?

peg, table, scanner etc?

>> No.1576312

>>1576273
also several boxes of animation paper, col erase pencils in blue or red, maybe a camera stand with a base and adjustable camera height to make pencil testing easier: http://www.kaiser-fototechnik.de/en/produkte/2_1_produktanzeige.asp?nr=5411
or you can just get a scanner,
an animation table or just a light table if you're strapped for cash.
a copy of digicel sketchbook,
maybe some dope sheets if you're really super serious about being traditional?

just practice m8, books are for nerds in terms of animation, either you can make movement or you dont, in the end if your animation looks crappy but you can't seem to know why then start doing something else, animation is not for you.

notice I said
>in terms of animation
if you wanna learn how to draw and paint theres tons of books, it has nothing to do with animation.

No, read the books. If you're going into any discipline, study it. Good movement comes from understanding the principles

So if you CAN'T make movement initially that exactly what the fucking book is for. People who start and stop their skill with natural talent suck balls compared to the ones who study.

as a student of animation you should really need to consider looking at music theory for a tiny bit
ideas/fundamentals are presented there
are analogues to animation
timing
rhythm
harmony
etc

some names are different but ideas overlap.
movement also comes to mind

and i cant stress this enough
ask your self
what is good animation? whats appealing,
whats stimulating.?
you need to follow this with
"why is that ?"

good luck

all and any that you find.
Just read the table of contents
the wiki page is a good start.

i'd recommend “the frist 20 hours” by josh Kaufman
give it a glace over, don’t read it if you don’t want to.

Hell the important things to take from it are.
chapter 2 and 3

Read it a bit if it interests you
at the end of the day its your life
do what makes you happy

I'll tell you why just getting a bunch of books and only reading the table is a good starting place though.
Glacing though a bunch of sources helps your identify things that repeat over and over again.
If things show up constantly .
Those things are probably important
and deserve a closer look

the books and who wrote them arent important.
Its wither the ideas presented are solid and relivent to what you want to get out of them.

Really think for bit of where you want to go.
Whats the kind of things you want to do and animate.
Look at why inspiring to you and ask
hey why is it interesting to me.
See how it relates to things you read.

Remember to have fun op.
You cant will fun but you'll know when your having it.

see if any of these things interest you
pretty much the whole book relates these idea

if your lazy and anxious check out "getting things done."
its productivity book about making things streamlined so you don't have to worry about things and get the things that need to be done finished

BTW yea, get all the books and vids people on this tread recommend
like I said
look what is universal with all of them
