1554086 No.1554086 [Reply] [Original]

As stated in the subject line, this is an anime/manga/cartooning thread!

Previous Thread here: >>1547582

Try to keep calm, have a positive attitude and avoid making Kind Janitor-san angry!

A general message to aspiring artists: Don't ever think that you should stop attempting to learn how to draw because "it takes too long" or "drawing is just a hobby." Being shitty at your hobby is definitely not better than doing your hobby well, no matter what your laziness tells you. Have some dedication in what you love to do, damn it!

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. Or you could muscle through it and end up like Genzoman or worse, your choice. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

The legs look slightly off in perspective, and the image itself feels flat. It's hard to make out the direction of the lighting, too. It looks like there's a downward cast shadow on her face from her bangs, yet her right side of her shirt and shorts are shaded like lighting is coming from her left. The legs are more or less without any shadow too, making them feel flat and separated from the rest of the image.

All of that combined with poor value control makes the image read very poorly. Work on value control, and shadow consistency. Some better lines would help too.

Nice, I don't mind the colors, they work fine for the most part. Don't be afraid of putting things in complete shadow like the artist you're emulating does. For example, the shadows on her shoulders and sleeve can go more solid instead of breaking them up in an attempt to differentiate the shirt from the sweater. If you do want to break it up, it'll look better not to have both ends open for color, ie where the sweater meets the collar and the other end where it meets the sleeve. (IMO, it probably you could fill in both ends).

Slow down, be more deliberate with your linework, think about what you're actually drawing. Granted, your pic may lose some energy or spark, but hopefully with a better understand of the forms and experience, you'll get it back. "Sloppy" doesn't necessarily have to mean "Haphazard."

People often just flat out lie, for a myriad of reasons. But if you let it get to you and influence your actions, you're kind of letting them win, in my opinion.

This place has its good sides just as much as its bad ones. It's just good people and bad people, invariably posting, nobody really knowing who is who.

I'm okay with the stupid rants, like this one I'm posting right now, the annoying trolls the stupid questions, I'm okay with the horrible advice and pointless discussion.
I half-assed-ly participate in them from time to time, but I mostly don't, because it doesn't make this board any better, it is not that enjoyable and pretty pointless.

It's like coming across a few people on the street, loudly arguing with each other, making a scene, you could try and participate and calm them down, you could avoid the street from now on (even though it has little to do with the street, depending on the area).
Or you just could keep on truckin'.

Because it's not sad that there's stupid and annoying people who take part in the community, it is sad that few people really know how to deal with it.

Miku, you've got some underlying perspective problems with that face. I keep asking you to practice learning the structure of a real head before you stylize, but it doesn't look like you have.

Here's your next assignment: Grab some sculpey, and sculpt a Miku-head. Make it as large as you need to. Take your time, and make it as perfect and symmetrical as you can. Make sure it looks right from all vantage points. DON'T include the hair (though you can mark the hairline and the center part of the hair).

Once you've done that, light it up with a lamp and use that as your reference. Get accustomed to drawing it in perspective.

For one, he's not drawing a human, he's drawing a creature from a game, and in the sense of that kind of character, the proportions are correct, if extremely emphasized for erotic effect.

Secondly, the way you describe line composition implies you have no understanding what it means, line composition includes the flow and the weight of lines to emphasize or de-emphasize shapes to draw the eye through the image and on the places where the artist wants them.

What you probably meant was more on the lineweight angle, that the lines were too uniform, I took the liberty of doing a paint over to emphasize the shapes more.

>line composition includes the flow and the weight of lines to emphasize or de-emphasize shapes to draw the eye through the image and on the places where the artist wants them.

Your piecemeal education of internet drawing factoids is conflated here. Line Composition is about the direction and alignment and not line weight. If I wanted to talk about line weight, I would have used that term instead.

>weight of lines to emphasize or de-emphasize shapes to draw the eye through the image and on the places where the artist wants them.

This is wrong and reflects on your understanding here. Line weight isn't responsible for leading the eye, it may help but it's not the leader. Line composition does the leading. Here is a website talking about it. (Linear Composition is another way of saying Line Composition)

http://mopdog.com/how-to-see-linear-composition-in-art/

While the article use whole paintings to demonstrate the idea, it can still be applied to parts of a piece or in this cases "sketches"

I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that English isn't your first language.

Your argument makes no sense just based on the fact that you say nonsense phrases such as "line alignment", I suggest you get a dictionary because these phrases when put together mean absolutely nothing in english.

It also calls into question your attempt to talk over people by using such made up jargon, I asked a few of my coworkers what it meant and I got a few chuckles, but it tells me that you're just making things up, and when corrected on proper terminology (I assume you mean flow, but when I corrected you on proper usage before, you got rather autistically angry). In the future I'd suggest hanging around, or better yet, ask a friend who knows what they are talking about, because unfortunately you do not.

very informative but the link talks about element composition positioned ALONG lines or curves. the term "Linear Composition" is different from what the other anon meant, which he clearly clarified when he spoke about line weight. the similarity was an artifact of said anon thinking and constructing terms to use in a certain situation.

you are being very stubborn and finicky with language as though terms used must EXACTLY match your own definition, otherwise 'anon is pretending to know what he is talking about'. this aspect of your post is shitposting, please stop it.

also, you are claiming anon's education is assembled from piecemeal factoids and conflated. This anon must insist that the same applies to you as you only seem to value your opinion regardless of context and are not willing to conceed anything, namely that said image has no background and (at this stage) we don't care about framing it within the "ER-Muh-Gawd-Comp-o-zee-shanz", anons were commenting on the lines/brush-strokes and how they add to the illusion of volume whilst being 'minimalistically' inked, which is, as you surely know, manga-style.

so why the fuck are you linking classical composition shit?

Never said "line alignment." I just used the words separately in a sentence. And why should my English matter? Apparently, you have had no problem in understanding my jabs or the general ideas I presented up to this point. You asked me to prove a term existed, and I did that.

I suggest you actual learn about art making and stop depending on your coworkers at McDonald's, or whatever internet hell hole you use to procure an education.

I already showed you an example of an educated professional using the term. It's not my fault that basic terminology, of a simple idea, goes flying over your head. You should already know this stuff by now. I can't be blamed for your stupidity.

He used the wrong word. He was talking about line economy. Otherwise, you're full of shit if you don't think line weight doesn't lead the eye. Both Loomis and Hampton have whole sections in the there respective books about line economy and "lost-and-found lines."

Also, everyone is different, and in all honesty, people will go to the element that excites them the most. Line economy and composition are just there to make everything more holistically appealing and help lead them through all of the other elements.

Any more corrections I can make on the head?

It started out very weirdly tilted, with most of the weight concentrated in the upper right, the far eye bulging, and the face all over the place.

Since then I've moved some of the weight around, brought the far eye in, and brought the chin and mouth forward slightly.

It's a bit more balanced, but still looks wrong. Should I expand the back of the head? Reduce the width of both eyes?

This is a "sketch" we're talking about, and not a finished piece. That term doesn't apply at all here. Didn't you figure that out when Kyle went through his usually titty baby rant, making excuse with, 'It's not finish, It's a sketch asshole!' Your shiting things on top of each other. Who cares what Loomis and Hampton said? That shit has no relevancy here. If you don't know what things are applicable and when and where they are used, maybe you shouldn't try to talk as you know what's going on. I'm not the one you should be upset with because of your lack of understanding of things.

This is exactly why you should use a reference more rather than less. You clearly have no idea what you are doing and it's not going to magically reveal itself to you if you avoid reference. I'm drawing characters that I can't use reference for yet I try to now practice from reference every so often so I can avoid issues such as the ones seen in yours. When you draw from reference you aren't supposed to blindly copy, you are supposed to understand how things work and how they are structured

You are drawing contours before you know the fundamentals and that's why it looks so bad. Start with the fundamentals if you really want to learn this stuff. Watch proko videos of gesture for example to get you started. That should help you get rid of the idea of copying reference

>> No.1556628

>>1556620
>>1556616
the reason he tells you to use a reference is because it looks like you've never seen a naked human. proportions are all fucked up, even though individual parts are ok, if looked at in isolation. if you want to draw from imagination, you need a good sense of how a human body is supposed to look like, as a whole, not just individual parts.

So I've been drawing for years now, and I've been looking to get better. When I was a kid, I'd draw Sonic characters and Pokemon, and it's had a real negative effect on my art where I can't draw anything that isn't super stylized and have it look good.

So obviously, I need to practice anatomy, so I need to practice loomis, so I can draw animu girls without their heads being bigger than their bodies, right? Here's the problem. I'd also like to get better at using my tablet (I'm absolute shit with it), but I have less time to draw on it than I do on pencil+paper.

So, basically, should I practice loomis harder on pencil and paper and learn to draw on my tablet later, or get better at what I need to do slower, but learn to use my tablet faster? Asking you guys since my art is typically stylized, and even after getting better at the fundamentals, I'll probably stick to that more often than not....

I guess mostly, as artists who do more anime-style stuff, is it better to learn to use my tablet now or later?

Isn't as bad as others are saying. The forms are solid and the anatomy is stylized but fairly consistent.

The gesture is okay in some places, but the actual pose is awful. Try standing like that. Do it. How the fuck do you think knees work, son? Bitch be pidgeontoed out the ass.

Also, look where the (her right, our left) thigh joins with the hip. The fold is incorrect. How you drew it, the thigh would be coming out the front of the pelvis. If you're going to have it pointing forward, you need to have the smoosh from folding against the pelvis.

Shading is okay. IMO the calves are too small in proportion to the thighs, but if you want to style it that way...

And the feet are too small, as another anon pointed out.

anyway, would fap, so that's all that matters.

The character in the back just looks plane odd to me, like she's about to fall over. What's she doing there? I can't tell if she's just some weirdo who stumbled on set, an adversary for suzuha or an ally. What I'm saying is her pose lacks intent. Which is important since we cant see her face.

It's peppy, but old tech (SandyBridge). New Wacom driver finally has Photoshop 7 working with Windows 8. Battery life is that of a laptop, so only get 2-3 hours out of it. Not good for a full day use or at a convention. I'm waiting to see the reviews on the Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga, or wait to see what BayTrail tablets come out next year. Hopefully 9+ hours with enough horsepower to run PS and MS fluidly will become the norm for tablets.

Whoops, didn't talk about if it's good for drawing... sorry.

The resolution for it (and my Samsung 500T) is only 1360x768. IMO a little too small for really serious drawing. Tool windows for PS and MS take up a little too much room. If looking for a tablet, full HD (1920x1080) or higher would be better.

My S7S and 500T though make it really convenient to draw pretty much anywhere. True, you can do the same with a sketchbook and pencil, but I got tired of having eraser shavings in my bed or on my couch. The S7S is lag free with the SB i5 CPU, while the 500T with the CloverTrail Atom CPU is just barely fast enough for HR sketching in Manga Studio, some intermittent lag, and you can't scribble in dark areas as fast as you would on the S7S or a Desktop PC and Tablet. But as I said again, new products coming out all the time, need to find the holy grail of raw power and battery life.

I vouch for this guy, I used to use :3 and still do to an extent. Everybody frowned upon the nature of my posts simply because I used a favorite emoticon, I don't get why it's such a big deal...

GreyDeath, you can do your thing if you want, but could you please do it in another thread? Or, preferably, on another board?
/po/ needs more traffic, so I guess you could set up shop over there.

I'm not really that good at 3D things like sculpture or papercraft (cool plans of the Discovery from 2001). Although back in college for my 2nd 3D Design course I did make Kei's gun out of paper boxes just for the hell of it. TA liked that I had initiative, he showed it to the Dean and all he said was, "handle is a a little boxy." ;_;

I do have the TV series on DVD but have yet to sit down and watch them properly to see if it holds up. Last 2 eps (I think they didn't show on TV) are nicely animated, the last ep having a nice Kei moment.

Pinnacle for the series IMO was the Dirty Pair Movie: Project Eden, great animation, soundtrack, and the DP never looked better. I kind of trailed off during the OAV series and Flight 005 Conspiracy. I never watched Dirty Pair Flash.

The girls' personality dynamics are fairly close to Panty and Stocking (to compare to more recent anime), except the Dirty Pair are of course, not as coarse or slutty (excluding doujinshi). Enjoy!

You gotta work on those joints. Make them more subtle. Also practice your line widths.

Anyone know of any good anime tutorial books that I can buy and read?
Preferably someone that isn't mark criley

Mark Criley is shit. You don't need specific books for drawing animu. Practice your basic skills (see OP) and study from animu artists.
