Anatomically the eyes are too high and large and look a little flat. Some of the values are causing things to not sit right inside the image, like the teeth seeming either inside or outside of the lips and the necks relation to the head. >> No.1553379

It does make you a bit of a pleb, yeah. When you want to shade something properly you add the opposite color. Doesn't have to be much, but some at the very least. Also, even without a pinkish hue skin tone, skin naturally contains the colors red, yellow, orange and green.

>> No.1553380

>>1553375
partially the tones are kinda there irl, partially in the classical 'muted colors' type paintings the yellowing varnish pushes some blues into green, so if you're trying to paint with a sort of traditional palette (often unintentionally) you tend to have a bit more green in there.

and strongly yellow light will add a bit of extra green into skin.

and on top of that some people have a green bias in their sight which makes green in skin tones look more green in paintings than they should.

it's quite an interesting topic. but there are lots of people who don't like it. so you're not alone.

>> No.1553381

>>1553379
Yeah and white light contains all the other lights. I know my colors somewhat well and I just can't see why you would add the opposite color with such high saturation. It doesn't stick out nearly as much if you use desaturated green and it still has more or less the same effect

>> No.1553382

Also, sometimes the lighting and your surroundings will make you cast a greenish shadow. It depends on what kind of light his hitting you.

>> No.1553383

>>1553381
You don't want to add a very saturated green, no, but likewise if it's too desaturated it'll just make the color muddy instead of making it look like a proper shade.

>> No.1553384

>>1553383
Not making it look like muddy doesn't take too much effort. The saturated (almost cyan) green just seems to almost be some trope on artsy portraits so I thought I'd ask you d/ic/ks about it

>> No.1553385

>>1553380
I didn't know people could have a green bias in their vision. Can people have the same with blues? Because I always love it when people use blues in figure paintings, but I can't see them like that for the life of me.

>>1553375
I don't know. I personally like it. I feel like a little bit of green where appropriate makes colors pop. If you think I've gone too saturated/don't like it, I understand, but I personally disagree.

Is your monitor okay? Because it doesn't really look close to cyan to me. Maybe a dull emerald, but nowhere near true cyan.

>>1553352

Maybe look into calibrating your monitor?

>> No.1553387

>>1553386
Was talking in general not just your specific piece. My monitor is okay and I have flux on when I'm browsing (would make cyan more green than vice versa) but I don't think those apply to my eyesight as well. I walk past some galleries on my way to school everyday so I see some rough oil portraits and they all use a lot of green and cyan and I think I've seen it in portraits in other places as well

Could you elaborate? I'm trying to stress the light more and I've changed the composition a bit because I want it to connect more. one thing that is immediatly recognizable, is that you are rather mindlessly trying to copy the picture. you look at individual parts (colors for instance) and try to pick them accurately as close to that of the ref image as you can. then you lay it down on your canvas comparing it only to that part of the ref image.

the result is this disaster. you need to try to make your values and hues and temperatures harmonize and carry over the appeal of the reference image, but within YOUR image. does that make sense?

imagine you did a value study of that image, but you are told to shift all values 15% into white. would you look at a blob of value in the ref, estimate it's greyscale value, increase the white by 15%, then lay it down? or would you you look at the reference, observe the RELATIVE value shift from one form to another and then try to keep the relative value shift within your study using the values you already laid down.

i don't know if i'm making sense plz tell me this isn't complete gibberish.

don't bother with tiny Details or likeness at the moment. You Need to work on constructing the head. I hate to say that but you Need more loomis (drawing heads and Hands). If you can draw the two forms (shown in the bottom left) from any angle, you have a good Basis to add more simple forms. In the next step you can worry about carving out Little Details but the first step should always be constructing with the most simple forms.

I'm really sorry to be an ass, but that's just how it is. I'm sure those people who you drew it for will appreciate it, a little bit (though them being mushed together with other people probably devalues the thing for your average narcissist from /soc/).

That doesn't make their lack of structure excuseable though. It's easily the worst thing going on in the pictures.
Next time you do this try and think about the underlying anatomy of the form you're trying to represent. I know it's easy to forget it and just focus on directly copying the picture, but that won't get you anywhere. Really try and understand what it is you're trying to put on paper. It'll help!

it doesn't matter, an artist with strong fundamental knowledge produces quality in such a sketch. This Sargent sketch probably took less time than any of yours and it's still great.
Still though, >>1553587 gives shit advice. It;s obvious that you're at a complete beginner stage. What you need to do is read Loomis' Fun with a Pencil, practice drawing basic shapes and forms like cubes and cylinders, then apply it to facial structure.

Because it is very stylized and there's some chance your fundamentals are lacking as in sense of form and understanding the planes of the face, you likely don't fully understand the three dimensional form of what you're drawing and therefor are unable to shade it properly.

Go back to studying form and planes of the face. Or try to find the simplified 3dimensional forms in your drawing, cylinders, spheres.
Think about the angle of your lightsource hitting those objects and shade accordingly.

Draw the head from another angle perhaps to figure out how it is shaped.

Also, if you stylize ears, pleas at least put in the tragus..

The distance between the guy and the closer ship seems a lot shorter than it should be....does that make sense? I cant even really say how I would fix it. Shadows and highlight arent just a darker or lighter base colour. Shadows are usually more saturated and highlights more desaturated. It's also not a crime to change the hue. The shadow is affected by light too. Purple or Blue as a shadow hue is always fine in most cases.

Use some colour balance to make your colour palette more harmonious.

You are wrong. If the lightsource is not overexposed, the highlights will be the color of the light. If the color of the light is more saturated than the local object color, then the highlights will be the most saturated. Which would be totally the case in your sunset-type lighting situation.

Yes, because you don't understand how forms and values work. Make a quick sculpture out of clay, light it up and draw from that if it helps you any. Keep a light source in mind.

How the hell did you end up on 4chan? Better be glad this is one of the more lenient boards regarding that.

Also, you obviously have no idea what you are doing. If you want to get better start working on your fundamentals. The sticky's a good place for that. This is also true for >>1554485.

And what I think that anon meant is that it is good that you know you could do better. As long as you don't get complacent with your art and have a healthy urge to improve, it's all fine. Don't be like one of those dA faggots with horrible art that think they are the shit and don't work on improving for years. Doesn't look like it. Whatever program/tool you're using is crap. Your lines are aliased like no other and there's no sign of pressure dynamics anywhere. Stick with pencil for now.

>can you or someone tell me which fundamentals are lacking?
Literally all of them. Your lines, values and color are crap. You have no understanding of forms and perspective. You don't know your anatomy either. The piece is amateur. Power through the sticky and the resources listed within (ctrlpaint will provide an introduction to all the fundamentals and then some).

>I read some Loomis and fundamentals (I guess not enough)
You have to practice from those resources too, not just read them. You should be drawing from life, that's where most of the learning occurs. All the resources can do is teach you what you should be looking for, and how you should approach your studies. Only directed practice will teach you how to draw.

>also I'm scared to ask but is my "style" shit?
>if so, how can I fix it or make a better one?
Don't worry about that yet. You need to have a decent grasp over all the fundamentals before practicing stylized drawings will yield any benefit. Stylization is ultimately an abstraction of real life - you need to have that base in place to produce anything meaningful.

Two things: The tank and the guy in armor look as if they are miniature figurines (action figures). Also, the muzzle flashes look a lot like there are fireballs flying into the cannon, and gun.

The space around them isn't selling the idea, I think it's one of the main reasons why I am seeing them more as action figures/toys, rather than real things. Try making the tank bigger and to a similar scale of one from real life, or making the guy smaller.

Another thing, this is more of a compositional issue. NEVER have anything important being cut off of the main canvas. The flash of the guys gun is going out of the frame and it makes things awkward.

TLDR: Define the space, fix the size relationship between the man and tank, fix the muzzle flashes, extend the canvas outward, or move the man inward, finally define another source of light.

How exactly can a beginner estimate an absolute value, even as a mistake? Maybe if you are blindly color picking.
Your eyes automatically sees values in relationship, unless you're looking at a picture done 100% in the same value (and even then, you're putting it in relationship with whatever else sits in your visual field, like the edge of your monitor). This is how our eyes works.
You say one should estimate the value change, but you fail to realize that's exactly as difficult as guessing the value of each plane, actually it's the exact same thing.
Plane A is value 50. You guess plane B is roughly 25.
Or: Plane A is value 50. You guess there's a 50~% drop down in value from plane A to B.
It's the same. You're way over-thinking this.
As you said, this is entirely dependent on how well your eyes are trained. Ask your non-art/beginner friends if they can tell you the % difference of two planes, even as distinct as the ones in your example, they can't.

I think one of the major issues is that you're not sure if what you're painting, and didn't really plan ahead the entire picture. Evidence of that is the first thing to hit the viewer. What you need to do next time is consider exactly what's going to happen, what's going to be on the canvas, what's most important and how to arrange them.

Once you've considered what's going to be part of your picture, set up some placeholders (or a block-in, however you prefer to work) and move from there. This is why thumbnails are important. You'll notice that for almost all professionals a picture is clear and informative about what it's saying right from the start. WIthout the level of detail of the finished picture, it still makes sense.

Look into composition. Feng Zhu had a good paid tutorial on that.

I think he meant not just look at local value clusters, but addressing the whole ref and relating values all over the place will result in a more accurate piece.

Example:
One plane @ 50% value sitting next to a plane you THINK is 70%

Then you look around and find another plane that you also thought was 70% and you find one is actually darker than the other in your ref, so the darker one might be 75% or some shit

At least that's what he should've meant, bc that's what you need to do. It still takes some eye training, but it help to choose values when you have all of the information from the ref in mind

I'm learning to draw backgrounds and stuff, I want to shadow it and add textures, however I wouldn't know how to approach both.
Also I do seem to notice a problem with the floor, the perspective is a bit off, how would you draw floor so it looks like squared tiles?

Because if you actually know how to use the brush properly it will always look better than smudge and you wont need to use it

Smudge has bad rep because many people think its the only way of blending in photoshop.
