Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"We never copy from the model, but analyze it." - Glen Vilppu

Previous Thread: >>1531864

Try to keep calm, have a positive attitude and avoid making Kind Janitor-san angry!

A general message to aspiring artists: Don't ever think that you should stop attempting to learn how to draw because "it takes too long" or "drawing is just a hobby." Being shitty at your hobby is definitely not better than doing your hobby well, no matter what your laziness tells you. Have some dedication in what you love to do, damn it!

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. Or you could muscle through it and end up like Genzoman or worse, your choice. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

I never understood the whole "Omg he drew something I don't like, RESPECT LOST" mentality. Some of my favorite artists occasionally draw things that are not my cup of tea, but I don't suddenly think they have committed some kind of crime nor do I think any less of them. drawings reflect a state of mind. If you're sitting around drawing animals having sex all day, it reflect deep issues inside you. Use your fuckin head. It's beyond an 'appeal issue' and it's more like a 'you have mental issues' issue. You can't pull a 'stop liking things that I don't like argument here'. There is a deep and inherent problem with sexualizing animals and grade school girls. It reflects a sexual psychosis.

Western Art has nothing to do with how modish Animu is. These Animu Threads however are about learning a complacency and a homogeneity with Animu. Which is why it all looks the same around here.

Every critique that is given in an Animu thread comes solely from the idea "staying on model". Every redline is about showing how off model you were. Every advice is about telling you how off model you were.

If you got pizazz in your drawings, you'll be a celebrity here, followed and copied--until the next pizazz comes along, or people get bored with your antics. These threads discourage active learning, and instead encourage propagandized a drawing process.

That's why it all looks the same here, at every level.

Different proportions or style choices does not make it "off-model." Not being able to draw them consistently makes one off-model. Not being able to draw from a variety of angles means the artist has no real understanding of form. Artists who can't do these things, who need to superficially copy from another drawing, are known as hacks. It is good to steer away from that.

The cloth is poorly drawn. Too many short, choppy lines everywhere. Too many straight lines. Please work on depicting cloth and making it look better.

The pose is also off. The arms are large compared to the head, as if they're being held forward, but they're shaded and angled in such a way as though they're being held straight up, creating visual dissonance.

Likewise, the legs just look weird. It's difficult to tell what's going on there, and the way the cloth shorts are folded only creates additional conflicts.

One step towards fixing it is to move his feet down and straighten out the legs a little bit. But there's really much more to be done.

Also if the sun is coming from the back left, you'd better introduce some dark values on the things that are facing away from it. But of course, get the pose right before you do that.

More hard-edged "glistening" highlights, transparency effects (like showing the contour of the hips through her ass, which is supposedly translucent), having more dripping / gooey features instead of having such a coherent form, etc.

Depends on your idea of what a goo girl is, I suppose, but I reckon a gooier looking girl is a better option.

Not the anon you're replying to, but it's true that he changed the composition. The terrible original figure was jumping toward us and the image was supposed to be some kind of cover (I guess, from the title at least). Teal changed it into a solid constructed figure jumping somewhere to the left, which would not be as good for a cover.
I think.

If it deviates on any part that wasn't questioned, it's automatically not a critique, it's a "you should've done this instead". So it's not legit.

>>1534897
Not really. If you notice, once again, Teal use "perspective" as a catch-all to talk about positioning the figure, distortion, overlapping and composition. But he quickly dismisses all of that in showboating the use of cross contours to emphasize the direction of the limbs, totally downplaying the fisheye like distortion the drawing was attempting to use as a part of its composition..

Did he give a cool drawing? Yes.
Did he actually look at what the original drawing was trying to do, and argue with that? FUCK NO.

Teal's readlines are the shining examples of telling you, that you were off model.

What do you think about this faces /ic/, are they bad? must I go back and practice more loomis?. What is the major flaw you see in them?

>> No.1535013

>>1534765

Your problem is that you are getting way ahead of yourself. You shouldn't be jumping right into extreme poses like the last 2 pieces of art you showed us... ESPECIALLY with this one >>1534597 when it's very obvious you don't know perspective or construction.
With >>1534730 you are jumping right into coloring when your drawings are sloppy, not to mention the clothes shading makes no sense and it looks just like a default brush with multiply turned on and scribbled everywhere. Its like how most of the people on Deviantart who jump right into photoshop before they even know how to hold a stylus. Perhaps you should be practicing in a sketchbook doing basic shapes, composition, line, construction ect. ect. before going right into fanart.

Secondly, your attitude sucks. Sure,
>>1534615 Was blunt with you but he wasn't wrong. You go on and on about your "studies" and "practicing" but when it comes down to it your work shows little evidence of said study, and obvious mistakes. You get all defensive and it shows, this is probably why people are getting annoyed with you when you are begging to be spoonfed basic info like this example:
>tell me how to get better if you want me to get better dude.

Knock that shit off. There are others here who post without blabbing on about how much studies they have done nor give attitude and show much better work than you. Furthermore, this isn't tumblr, nobody cares about your feelings or history. Lastly saying stuff like:
>You are a scholar, and a gentleman.

Not particularily in the faces themselves, but your jaws do all look very similar, both on the more masuculine and feminine models. Perhaps change it up for different faces? ex. A tougher-type guy might have a more square jaw? It gives your charecters more personality, and you don't have to exaggurate the jaws either, which would make your designs look more western style.

>> No.1535031

>>1534994
>must I go back and practice more loomis?

Not Loomis necessarily, but practicing and honing your shape drawing and understanding of structure is never-ending.

You've drawn a few random faces of different characters, so your consistency is not tested. The heads are not shown in many different perspectives, and you tackle none of the hard ones. There's too much mirroring in the eyes. The expressions are limited, and none of the eyes are looking away from the viewer.

Your limitations are clear from what you choose to omit. Ask yourself why, and if you're honest, you should know your weaknesses.

They don't, actually. Flip both your picture and the reference, maybe you can see the difference. You aren't sticking to anatomy, your knees look thick, fat and unnatural - the reference does have thick thighs, but they're not as lumpy.

You're better than I am, so I don't know that I can tell you exactly what's wrong - but they don't look natural to me.

You might be overdoing the form a bit with the light/shadow making them pop more than they really do, but that's the best guess I've got.

I'm confused, all you're doing is shopping someone else's work? I mean, you definitely improved on the guy's jaw, but you can't expect to get very far on a technical level unless you put your pencil to the paper and learn what it is that the artist who drew the picture was originally thinking.

I'm not saying there isn't a future for this kind of stuff, but it's not /ic/ work. You might want to head to /gd/ (graphic design) for photoshop work instead of actual painting/drawing work. That said, you mentioned you haven't learned anatomy (and some other stuff) - you should learn it. Anatomy, form and perspective all go hand in hand (most art does, actually) - but with these three things you can know what is anatomically incorrect in any angle.

If I'm misunderstanding and you actually drew this, let me know - I'll post a different reply (sort of).

Your colors are almost exclusively warm, which creates zero contrast. You need to study figure and anatomy though, as your hands look like she has two thumbs instead of a pinky. Also, you lack confidence with laying down your paint - it's very blocky and doesn't live up to what I would expect from an anime drawing.

If you're using reference (which I assume you are based on the clothing and hair) then I suggest you try to emulate the original artist's style - clean up your value variation specifically. Also in the future I'd spend some time studying proportion, figure, anatomy and color theory. Maybe a little time on composition as well. Other than that, it's a good solid drawing - not amazing, but still fun to look at.

You need to do some muscle and bone studies, your arms for example are basically jetting out of the sockets - there is no muscle on the anatomical left shoulder, for example (either that or you drew it thinking of the muscle way too sharp).

Your gesture work seems to be solid considering how fluid the figure is, but there are a lot of anatomical anomalies. Are you using reference? If not, get into this position, or if you have a girl willing to pose for you get her to position like this and then take a shot of it. It'll help a lot.

Either way, take a picture of the position and then make sure you pay particular attention to the way the muscles lay on the bone, and the way the bone looks in perspective.

>bad habit
If it reflects the kind of work you want to do, then I see no problem emulating the artist. You're basically doing the same thing with a master study when you copy from observation. If you're studying a style though, it would be very beneficial to know enough about your fundamentals to know if something is "off."

That said, you can't just go at a style like anime without knowing what to look for - you HAVE to study good work and understand what they're using to create their "style," anime is very symbolic and simplifies a lot of fundamentals (light, color, value) but "good" anime won't exclude a fundamental entirely.

As with anything, there are good artists and amateurs - bad habits can be fixed, but you should still look for people who know what their doing, and this is a chore if you don't know what to look for - if you DO know what to look for, I see no reason to not study style. Style is a conscious choice, you can't just master something like anime without studies.

Pic semi-related, 1/3. There are a lot of ways you can draw, you SHOULD draw realism because you'll learn a tremendous amount, but that doesn't mean you SHOULD ignore things that aren't realism.

Hope this makes sense!

Haven't read this in a while but if I remember right it does talk about the major 5 styles (realism to abstract symbolism) - don't discredit a style because it's a style - if you like it, that means it succeeded in the job it was doing. Study the artist, learn what makes their style a style.

While I like these drawings, what you've done is less an exercise in capturing the nuances of different races, and more a catalog of generic archetypes that happen to be associated with certain races. It is as if you were drawing the main character, and two back ground enemies.

Again, no offense to the drawings themselves. It is simply that your choices reflect cliche typecasting that one tends to find in older video games and B-movies.

I suppose I could have drawn all 3 as skinny ass teens, but I thought the exercise was to make them distinctive as in different age\body type. Many manga artists (even in Japan) I think have a hard time drawing something other than skinny teens. Some draw older people as teens with just more lines on their face. I try not to be that.
