This - the assholism.

Relax your face and then focus on only stretching your mouth - you can do this and have your alignment be much wider than the eyes. Every face is different - if you sameface, then study a shit ton of faces to help understand.

Emphasis on the >generalization; because being "non specific but accurate" is what will help with sameface. Symmetry is the most important thing in a face, and even then, it shouldn't be 100.00% perfect if you want it to feel realistic.

The eyebrows are seldom uniform in thickness and value. Look how faint it is just above the tearduct, then it becomes much darker and thicker, then fades to a lighter value again. There's more to the eyebrow than the shape of its contour - think about value and edges.

>> No.1530513

>>1530509
You're saying I should construct it while working with values? I thought everything should be formed at the stage of sketching, no?

>> No.1530516

>>1530513
There aren't really any definitive rules on what should and shouldn't be included in the sketch, especially if you intend to paint it. The problem here is that you filled it with a uniform value when you didn't need to.

You should either fill in all of your darks, or none of your darks. In the sketch, lay in your lines as contours for shapes - including the shadow shapes. Divide everything as being in the light value group, or the dark value group. It can be argued that only part of the eyebrow belongs in the dark value group, but that depends on how you approach it.

After you have your two value groups established, expand it so that you have about 5 values in use while keeping the initial divide consistent (three values in the lights, 2 values in the dark for example).

1530524

>>1530513
>>1530516
And for extra clarity, here are some quick and dirty mockups of dividing the reference into two value groups. I played around with the contrast slider to make these, so it's not as 'correct' in terms of refinement or simplicity had it been done by hand.

As you can see, depending on which values you want to push into your shadow group, it's possible for either the whole eyebrow to be grouped with the darks (shown on the right), or only part of the eyebrow to be grouped with the darks (shown on the left).

You should pick whichever one you feels works best compositionally.

you need to study lighting asap.

you seem to just randomly jot little brushstrokes to give it a 'painterly' feel and cover up the fact that you can't actually build form, that will only get you so far (in face it will get you nowhere) so you would be better off studying light and colour before trying something like this.

There nothing wrong with doing fun stuff from your imagination too but make sure that you are trying to incorporate what you lean in your studies and make a priority of studying.

Cool man, turned out great. I think you can simplify/flatten the rocks a lot though. And also make the dragon pop a little more with value and saturation (take a look at how Ruanjia handles this stuff). I also think you can crop a bit tighter to get rid of dead space. And the guy on the throne at the bottom can be more obvious too. Watch out too for it being a bit overly symmetrical, I tried adding some cracks to one column to break it up a bit.

Anyways, hope that helps a bit...I think I went a little heavy handed on the paintover, obviously you can do it with more time and subtlety. Just my 2 cents on the piece though, again, it looks great.

I have no idea what I'm doing.
Any input would be appreciated.

I was just messing around with colors in Photoshop (which I never really did before) and it turned into a weird landscape (of which I also never did one before other then just copy).

I know it's shit.

well, you've got a semblance of perspective in there, so good going. Anyway, I'm going to treat this assuming you'd like to put together stuff like 1530781 eventually.

Forget about colors for awhile, you need to work in black and white to learn some basics about value and how to use it to represent light/shade. There's guides on this in the OP if you dig around. Also, look into linear one and two point perspective. That should get you started.

>>1530833
Her cleavage kinda looks like it's painted on, and her navel/hips seem disjointed. Certainly not bad though.

Looks nice. Looks like you used small brushes for the entire thing though, or some sort of jitter. Try working with the biggest brushes you can, then doing details like the brown marks with a texture brush.

>>1530799
looks like you're just copying the value. Try to think about how those shadows give the face form. The shadow the nose is casting is too close to the nostril in your version. It should run up and over the tear duct.

Fond of the ear in this one, not so much the rest. Again, numbers are minutes spent on each sketch

I'm not sure what's going on with the light source. Seems like there's a white light to our left of the scene, and the lights on the robot are supposed to be casting light. Id suggest making the white light weaker and lighting it mostly with the robot's lights. That'll require quite a bit of repainting though.
Also, work on your hands/fingers.

>>1530752
Looks solid, but you're riding that white pencil a bit hard. reserve it only for the brightest brights. Also, your value only hits 10 (dark) in some creases in the lower right. Try expanding that value into the shadows a bit more next time while reducing the white- leaving more halftones to play with.

I just have to face it, I draw ugly titties.

Really cool, I like seeing oil in these threads. I don't think you can really pull it off on this one so critique to keep in mind for the next: Only thing I'd say is to push the value on the hill down, and the value on the top of sky even further than that. You've got a foreground which works really well cast in bright light, a mid-ground (the hill) and the sky as background, but they all hang out in the same value range.
Take that with a handful of salt, I haven't really bothered too much with composition in a long time.

neck is too long, and the ear is too busy and doesn't look much like an ear, aside from its placement.

I like these, but I'm still struggling with organizing my value quickly while making sure my strokes follow/describe form.

No real secret. Just takes a lot of practice and observation to slowly get things right.

Note that there's no universally correct palette for skin tones - it depends on the local colors of the model's skin, as well as lighting conditions (both from primary and ambient light sources).

A key tip is to never use colors straight out of the tube - learn to have an appreciation for the grays. It's one of the more useful means to achieve hue and temperature shifts while keeping a harmonious palette. These posts on Gurney's blog are somewhat related:

Her hips are strange, maybe because the panties seem to be riding up on (her) right. The panties look like a solid object rather than fabric that clings. Her left hand and arm feels unnatural, maybe place it on her hip instead of her belly and uncurl the fingers. The perspective on the face is off, like it's being stretched, particularly (her) left eye and eyebrow. Her right cheek and jaw is also wider than her left. Also, try letting some light hit her left cheek, that might help it look fuller. (The right side of her head needs more light too, it's pretty dark.) Awesome! I didn't think I'd get a reply at all. Bargues are meant to be done in the sight-size method. I don't currently have an easel or stand that I can use to properly do a sight-size drawing. My goal is to be able to get really strong likenesses in under an hour, so I'm working mainly on value organization and line quality until I can get a sight-size setup going. That said, I'll probably still only spend 3-4 hours on each drawing, as I see the main benefit of sight-size practice to be developing the ability to draw what you see. I don't really care much for rendering.

I've been there. During a critique you really can't say anything. I cringe at myself now, when I'd even explain that I was 'aware' of my mistakes. And the answer was always an immediate checkmate "Why didn't you fix it then, anon?"

Critiques are hard for everyone, I bet even the best can't take them. You'd have to be an utter sociopath or liar if you brush off critique as being 'no big deal.' You have to go through with them, tough skin or not. Great artists got so good that there are few things you can point out in their work really. And the reason they allow critique is they open up, it's very emotional, they are in pain and they want to improve more than they want to breathe. If there was anything to help them get better they would take it. So they finally grow up, stop talking and making excuses and let someone else examine them.

This has nothing to do with your post. Just an insight on that vulnerability with C+C.

Thanks! You're right. I didnt dare to mess with the ropes too much because they are very major for the comp so I kept them parallel or else it might have looked messy (?).

Now looking at your grid I think you should add another vanishing point for the leftmost columns to compensate for the extreme "camera" angle distortions. Do you know good sources where I could learn about this? I only know basic perspective rules with 1/2/3-point and never read or saw anything beyond that on ctrl+paint etc. I did notice that left part was off but I dont know the rules behind it so I went with it not questioning the grid. I'd love to learn more about those advanced perspective rules and camera lense stuff. If you don't I'll just search for 'advanced perspective rules' or something.

Actually looking at the painting again I think the rule is simply that all objetcs on both sides from a perspective point centered in the picture have their own secondary point off the page?

oh honey its looking so nice but i really think you would benefit to wash darkest darks first then lighter shadows and build up to finally highlights with opaque lights like old oil do....
