Previous Thread: >>1525508

Try to keep calm, have a positive attitude and avoid making Kind Janitor-san angry!

A general message to aspiring artists: Don't ever think that you should stop attempting to learn how to draw because "it takes too long" or "drawing is just a hobby." Being shitty at your hobby is definitely not better than doing your hobby well, no matter what your laziness tells you. Have some dedication in what you love to do, damn it!

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. Or you could muscle through it and end up like Genzoman or worse, your choice. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Ah, ok.
The trouble is that in actual animation, many shortcuts are taken, which is why most contemporary anime look very primitive, with only two tones of shading, etc. So there's nothing to be gained from imitating actual anime. i.e. it's just meant to be fluid and efficient.

The actually admirable art is found in manga and fanart, which, like everything else, still falls under Sturgeon's law.

We had a thread on manga artists a couple of weeks ago. Maybe it's still around, dunno.

I kinda find it interesting how features relate to each other, and how sometimes it's the things you deem unimportant that turn out to be the most important thing.

Like how in order to understand the neck, the head, the chin and how everything fits together it's actually the ears that you have to pay close attention to.
Or in this case for understanding the mouth, it's the teeth in relation to the nose that you have to pay attention to for it to make sense.

I think that's the reason why beginners tend to be able to draw single eyes, noses or ears pretty decently, but can't for the life of them put it all together on a face.
Anyway, i just wanted to share this.

I tried to turn the head more but this is about as far as I can take it because I want both eyes to be showing. I also added a fold in the neck b/c I saw a lot of folds in my neck when I turned it.. also which shoulder are you talking about . if your talking about the front one, right now it's going the opposite direction of the head turn because of the arm wrap. so that shoulder is being pushed out which might make it seem her neck is twisting more then it really is
the girl on the left is suppose to have a dreamworks face btw

Better of just drawing a shitload of random manga-type things or go through some manga drawing guides/tutorials?

I too don't like this combination of moe head together with a disfigured body with tons of sloppy fat on it. Some of you are too easily imperessed and tricked, but if you look past all that fat, you'll see that his anatomy is pretty weak.

His understanding of the neck to body area is especially weak.

But it seems like drawing huge sloppy tits is enough distraction to make people think it's actually good anatomy.

I'm not one of the previous posters, but there is a minor issue of posing for the girl on the right. It is not about the possibility of the pose, but the efficiency of it.

If we take a look at that girl from a top down view, her torso seems pointed to the right, her face to the left, and her eyes to the right again. Such complex, alternating orientation tends to show multiple intent of movement, and that does not seem to be what the artist wishes to express here.

Most of the time, the twisting body should show one uniform motion. This is the whole action line concept in animation.

I think you should branch out a bit to gain experience.
Try to stop drawing the moe head for practice. because right now i don't feel like it fits.
Work on your style bro.

Also stop focusing so much on anatomy. The clothes and hair are also a huge part of aesthetics. You tend to only draw bald chickenlolis, and even when you clothe them it looks like they are always quasi naked.
You need to realize the BEAUTY of hair, fitting clothes and all the distinct features of the face! stop thinking about anatomy, it's important but it's not all there is!

You develop by trying out new things as well as learning already existing techniques. Leading to you having your own way of doing things as well as a good amount of knowledge about how things are SUPPOSED to be done.

In other words: go out of your comfort zone and try out a lot of things.
Nothing will change by you doing the same thing over and over again, at least you will only develop at a snails pace this way..

Learn how to do realistic eyes correctly. Major forms, major planes, etc. Once you know how the eye works and can depict that on paper, you can simplify. Pic related.

I'm not a regular in these threads. The pic I attached isn't mine, but a repost from teallineguy.

With that in mind, I think your problem stems from use of established simplifications without fully understanding the real world analogues. A few of the heads from the first two rows look fine, but once you have extreme angles, you're trying to shoehorn simplifications that only work from level vantage points.

For example, your jawline never changes, even when we're viewing the head from below. The mouth and lips have no real forms. The nose simplifications work from some vantage points, but not all. The eyes in the extreme shots don't read as spheres and the irises aren't laying on the eyeball correctly in perspective.

Take the time to learn how to draw the real head (especially the skull). If you haven't watched Vilppu's three head drawing videos, you should. They're very helpful for learning to construct the skull and head, as well as the various parts of the face.

When designing a painting what is better, fixing something shitty or designing something perfectly from scratch?

When I try to plan everything ahead of time often I miss a single obvious thing that ruins the whole picture.

Other times I just draw to get it done ASAP, then I paint over it to fix the mistakes, usually ends up looking more dynamic but it lacks unity.

Pic is me practicing painting over some images that were bugging me.

I don't want to scold anyone for learning from Loomis. It's good in the long run. It's good that you are forced to draw some primitives. But I feel you guys are misunderstanding the whys.

Loomis draws all those shapes and guidelines in order to consistently reproduce a standard human face with many different planes, to a standard set of proportions that he favors. The cartoons and anime characters you guys are drawing do not have so many planes. They do not share the proportions used by Loomis. You are trying to map those faces onto a construct that does not fit. Why?

If you truly understood construction, you'd only use the shapes and lines you need. What you guys are doing right now is copying the blueprints of a car to build a boat.

> I feel that once I fully understand his divided ball and plane method I may utilize it to my liking and draw any head I want.

Then study Loomis *seriously.* If you drew any of the previous examples, then you used a lot of time drawing lines going nowhere, doing nothing, having no relation the final face laid on top. That isn't going to help, because you're not understanding why that line was drawn in the first place.

>I truly believe that the principle still holds true on all heads, including Animu.

The principle behind form holds true. The principle behind space holds true. The various ways of dividing space equally in perspective holds true. And that is why those pictures were troubling.

Let's look at >>1531330 . The artist drew a cross in perspective to locate the center of the head mass. Forget the fact it seems to be laid in there arbitrarily, let's just assume that is correct. If you drew a line straight down from there, does the neck match it? No. So the neck is still not centered. The artist didn't actually use the construction lines he drew.

Let's look at >>1531309. Are the sliced sides actual ellipses? Does the artist know why the ellipse is used? (Answer: the ellipse not only shows orientation, but its width to height ratio shows how much the face is turning.) Do any of the alignment lines respect the shape of the head? It's not doing anything, it's not proving anything, it's not making anything consistent.

Again, I hate to come across as dissuading you from Loomis, but some of you guys aren't ready. It's not going to help if your spacial sense is poor. Go study Loomis seriously, go study primitives seriously. Doing this half way just means you won't understand what all the lines truly represent, and more importantly, how to do proper alignment/boxing in of your own cartoon/anime designs.

We're not talking about me here, we're talking about you. And yeah, I can probably do better. Learn 3d forms for godsake, you are still too shit to actually even think about making a manga. You barely even have gesture down, seriously just practice more before you jump in and become an "artist."

These remind me of those 14 year old weaboos on facebook who want to become "manga artists" when they go to college.

It's not too bad but, that stance is really throwing me off. I don't know if you're going for that but, it seems that she's about to tip over. And, I think the skin could be colored better.

Mine's all on paper, and I don't have a scanner m8. I'm still learning, but at least I have a grip on the fundamentals, unlike this "manga artist'

I'm not really worried about the anatomy, but mind elaborating? Any criticism is fine really.

>>1531775
I was going for that, it's supposed to be like "she's walking on air" kinda like the shots you see in fighters that are mostly just there to show off the character. Pic related.

Yeah, the coloring is what's bugging me the most. I wanna move away from line art too, what do you recommend?

>> No.1531804

>>1531798
I don't know, for anime style drawings like yours, the lineart is the way to go imo. But yeah, I'm having trouble with colors too, usually skin uses more colors than peach and brown, sometimes blue. Just do some skin studies and you'll be find

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking of doing. I have a collection of pictures of pretty girls, so I might just start using those to do a bunch of digital painting portraits.

Oh, I do wanna point out though, that in the picture of Noel for example, the line art isn't as 'black' as mine, I feel like there is one step I'm missing when it comes to line art.

How do I make it look better?

If you can't do the pose yourself, you probably shouldn't draw it

>> No.1531811

>>1531808
Why exactly?

I don't think anyone can do the pose Noel is holding really, and there are plenty of "floaty" poses that look fine.

I'll take your advice and keep it in mind though, thanks.

Your line work is sloppy. Clean it up and learn more about line weighting. Use longer, continuous, strokes. I will let someone else do a red line of the body, but I can tell you the right arm is too long and forearms are not shaped like that. The lower calves/thighs are badly shaped as well. The face is also badly shaped and the expression is derp.

Shit storm incoming

What I meant was, I'm not worried about the anatomy in that piece, as it's not what's bothering me about it.

Good call on the arm though, I didn't notice that.

I'm still working on getting longer stroke on tablets. I find it more difficult to do so than on paper. I actually have no problem doing it on paper.

Any tips? I can do line weight if I could get longer strokes going on tablet.

And yes, I know "draw with your elbow" I'm just saying, shit's tough on a bamboo.

> I'm not worried about the anatomy in that piece, as it's not what's bothering me about it.

It should. Anatomy, proportions, value and form are your fundamentals and if they are not your first and foremost priorities then you're doing wrong.

Did you use any construction methods at all? Pick up Hampton's figure drawing and drill those basics into your head. If you can't see what's wrong with that anatomy you have a lot of work to do.

About line economy, either get a larger tablet or work from a larger scale

Yes, I did, but what I'm getting at, is that if I do a greyscale or a monotone of the piece, it looks better.

Something about the coloring is what bugs me the most, in contrast, the anotomy is not so much of a big deal, since I know how to improve that, yet, coloring still remains one of my biggest weaknesses that's seeing little progress. That's why I said "the anatomy is not what I'm worried about" because there are more pressing issues in my mind. No use focusing on what's been steadily improving over the past few months.

Anyway, thanks. I do have plans on getting a larger tablet. I feel that if I had a better tablet, this would be less of an issue. If I had a cintiq, it would be a non-issue, though those are too pricy for me atm.

Anyway, here's the proof of construction.

lol, I like how this whole thread is people just shitting on each other with little constructive criticism, yet most of the pieces you see posted here are very sub par.

Last time I ever bother to post here.

>all that jelly

Look, I'm no master at this trade, but seriously, it's embarassing how people ITT can behave. I'll stick to the other thread instead, people there are actually much more helpful.

Because at least I feel like I can improve. My work looks a lot better than 90% of what's posted here, and all the decent work gets shit on by so called "pros" whose work can't be posted because
>reasons

Anyway, like I said.

I'm out. You guys have fun circlejerking over girls with dicks.

I don't mind criticism, and my work being torn a new asshole, but people aren't really giving me much help, they're just saying "this sucks that sucks"

It's funny, I made a thread in this board dedicated to looking for some input on this very piece, and got tons of constructive advice.

I'm sure most of you are /a/nons, that would certainly explain the /a/utism. Anyway, like I said, cya.

>> No.1531862

>>1531857
Nope.

You're given constructive advice, but you ignore it because, "oh anatomy doesn't matter, I can fix that, the colouring is more important"

You can focus on colouring after you learn anatomy.

I got the same problem some time ago, and truth is, life still helped me a lot. Go try it.

And stop having that thin skin. Guess where are you posting and where you are.
