How would you categorize Anime?

The Anime Fanbase doesn't seem to care despite there being about 6500 Anime

i think one big general thing would be moe vs non-moe styles.

Painters = God Tier
Sculpters = Good tier
Concept design = ok tier.
Illustration = meh tier.
Tattoo = bad tier.
Tracing = shit tier.
Anime = below shit tier.

sort of like that.

I categorize it by story quality when watching, and by animation style when studying. There are good and bad anime artists, just like there are good and bad realism, stylized, abstract, etc. artists.

Being close minded won't make you a better artist, anyone who shuts out anime completely as being "unworthy of knowing" is someone who won't get better as an artist.

>Various artists and their styles.
>Pointing out there are a broad spectrum of artists in every style and field.
>Pointing out that ignoring this won't help you as an artist.

That's what it has to do with art.

You mean all those painters/artist before anime was even invented, were shit?

This picture is ridiculous. It has nothing to do with the art styles or their "acceptance" rate, and everything to do with the creator's taste in the anime shows.
>MOESHIT NOT ALLOWED
>Usagi Drop is fine though lol
I hate it when people cite stupid charts like this.

I mean that they probably didn't ignore a specific style because it wasn't their taste, they took in what they could and moved on.

"DRAWING STYLIZED IS NOT ART"
Shut the fuck up.

This must not be art either! inb4 HURDURR MAH REALISM IS THE ONLY WAAAY

Not OP, but the pic is about acceptance among japanese people in general.
And usagi drop definitely has a mixed style. It's not all moe, the eyes aren't as big, it feels much more shoujo/josei/seinen like.

I liked anime.
More recently, I became interested in painters like lucien freud, manet and gustav klimt and am drawing like them.
I still like stuff like hidamari sketch, though.
For me it is like that, but of course I feel embarassed when I talk to others about what I like and I end up having no opinion at all.
Personally, though, this anime style, while childish, is still more interesting than say dreamworks or wreck it ralph tier big nose characters. At least I have the internet to be a philistine on. In the real world I will go on pretending. Amen.

This is assuming you wish to limit this to visual style only.

The difference between the two lists is that the one on the left is "conservative." They are mostly older styles that have been tested and refined, and with which older viewers are more familiar. They've been "vetted" by time. Elements of these classic stylings are always coming in and out of vogue, in ways a lot of foreign viewers are not aware.

The list on the right are mostly new shows that cater to a small and finicky set of viewers. They all still contain elements of older anime in varying degrees. Their unique stylistic choices have not been vetted by time. The best of these may eventually become accepted. The worst of these are likely those without wide application, i.e. designs that cannot be turned well and rely on a lot of shortcuts, or are extremely stylish but easy to copy gimmicks that are popular due to novelty. But, if any of them manage to become breakout hits, finding wide acceptance among the young, then it will be included on the list to the left in a couple decades.

You know nothing about art if you believe the style something is drawn in is the deciding factor whether or not something is art. Educate yourself before you run your mouth, you ignorant fool.
