Tried doing a study with colour for the first time.
Also, I mostly used a square brush, no sensitivity, opaque, for this too. No idea why I picked something with so many little details.

Any help?

Obviously hair, nose, cheek (how do I make it look like it is a 3D form and not just flat as it seems to be now, the left cheek from our point of view, I have tried and failed) and mouth need more work. Should they be near perfect at this stage, or is it easier to fix the forms later, after glazing? I will also put the shadow back below the skin.

thanks, about the torso thing, I like how it looks to me - I'm copying this from George Petty's ballerina (side by side, no tracing that'd be stoopid) and the body proportions are about similar. Mine is a bit thicker and older compared to the original.

I learnt A LOT with this, I didn't draw anything in months (which is something I do a bit too often) so it helped me get back on track, and now I know a lot more about shading and stuff.

Almost done, will finish it today probably.

Yea, the proportion on the body was off a bit since I was drawing it while lying down using a tilted back CRT monitor, which doesn't help with the forms much. Rectified it quickly so it maintains it's original streamlined body.

For the sense of weight, I noticed based on the source of the light, the shadow below the car does not make sense, which makes it appear to be floating. Also lowered the main body of the car to enforce the sense of weight.

canvas size doesnt really matter, just make it large enough to be comfortable. canvas size will not really effect your brush confidence. i'm talking about using the least amount of strokes to describe a passage, instead of using hard round opacity to pressure, stroking it a million times with intermittent color picker which gives that ultra soft, pillowy, crappy look.

look at david. look how fucking bold he is. he's about to fucking kill a giant and he's made of marble and he's solid. get that across in your rendering.

>>1524784
that might be part of it but its mostly because david is a teenager and the head's size compared to the body is larger than an adults (because the head grows the least throughout development)

I wouldn't bother constructing that. You could just mark the major landmarks (center line, top of the hood, top of the roof, etc) and connect them just by feeling the form.
If you really have to construct it though, you can take the side views and use the warp tool to position them in perspective and then trace lines in perspective from that. Or if you're familiar with some 3d application, you can build a simple 3d mesh based on the side views and paint over it.

So first thing, I just want to say that I know that you aren't accusing me of tracing, that you were just thinking out loud.

That said, there actually were a lot of construction lines, I just draw those very lightly (after practicing and planning it on a separate sheet of paper).

An if anyone is interested, this was the final product.

That's quite beautifully rendered.
The point at where the arm narrows lines up nicely with the bottom of the rib cage, but just that little triangular shadow further down makes it look like you're implying that the inner part of the arm is further down than the elbow.

The arm may just be elongated, an arc from the tips of the fingers would have them rest at her knee.

I like that though. Not sure what the drama is about, obviously not traced (at least not from a photo). The face and expecially the mouth is really nice and has a great style of rendering, but it clashes with the background and the solid colored face. If I were you I would probably have simplified the hair and background or simply stopped before drawing all that.

Form is highly important. Contrast and values are equally important while color itself (At least at this stage of definition) can be let by the wayside a bit. Focus on getting the forms out quickly and deftly and then refining them, not focusing on small areas and then piecing them together (otherwise you get microchin in the background there.)
I'm going to (likely accurately) assume this is from the lord of the rings?

It's a bit of a boring image, sorry to say. The values and colours are dull, and the pose is about as static as can get. You can still keep a fairly straight-on standing pose but make it a bit more interesting and less stiff.

Here, I did a quick paintover showing how I might try to get more interest in the image. Some minor changes to the pose, some more clear lighting, and I introduced more values and colour variation. Hope this helps!

So I'm stumped on a composition for this. It's for a tabletop RPG, and all I really want to show off is the frog guy, but he has 3 cultist henchmen. Any ideas on a decent composition? I'd like to shoot for a horror/ creepy factor.

>> No.1526132

>>1526121

Needs a background. There's really nothing else to tell you at this point because you've given us nothing to work with. Unless something about your project brief forces you to forgo a background, you should probably make a few mock-up thumbnails of background/lighting ideas with the characters in them and then come back for better feedback. You're stumped for the composition because you haven't actually fleshed one out yet. If you were doing this for a client they will usually expect thumbnails or a rough idea of the final composition/lighting before they tell you to go further and render characters.

>> No.1526136

>>1526121

I want to add one last thing. I recognize that you want to get into rendering the characters right away because that's the fun part, but an extremely large part of illustration is doing the legwork for every piece. This means doing thumbnails, color comps, design iterations/concept art (if you aren't given a style guide which includes designs), etc. James Gurney's book "Imaginative Realism" does a good job of outlining the entire process from start to finish and shows you a lot of tools you can use to produce a better final result.

Getting to that final step of painting the final illustration is really the last part of a much larger process. Go through the hard/exhausting work at the start and it'll pay off later, always. It also saves you a lot of frustration in redo-ing a piece over and over again.

Both. First copy his diagrams. Then apply the same concept to the model (life is preferable, but quality photos work). You can then test what you retain through drawings without references.

The goal is to study the model and build up your visual library. Loomis provides tools and frameworks for studying the model. His work is intended as a supplement to life drawing.

It's not just a texture problem. Major forms and planes need to be clearly defined. Then comes refining with minor planes and forms. Then extra detail as needed. Finally, texture can be incorporated as part of the polishing step (though strong use of texture brushes in the earlier steps might eliminate the need to add it in later).

I'm seconding that the thumbnail does look good though. Once I zoom I am both surprised and let down. If you decided on revisiting this, I'd be careful to not destroy the value hierarchy you've established.

No, but the vignette is unnecessary IMO.

The refining is coming along decently, but I'd like to see more emphasis on minor forms before the surface texture. It doesn't feel like there's much musculature aside from the major forms, making it look a bit like a clay model instead of a living creature.

A lot of it comes down to deliberate practice and experience. Next time you do a batch of gestures from reference, do a few unique poses from imagination.

Have a clear action in mind. Try to feel the weight of a pose, all the tension, all the pinches and stretches. Have a sense for the center of mass, and any counterbalance occurring. Get up and act out the pose.

Your perspective is really off (best example would be the bottom left of the cube, look at your angle and then look at the reference). Your shadow is too large compared to the reference, and is at least one full shade lighter than it should have been (use color picker on this one to help see it if you can't eyeball the difference I'm talking about).

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=116213

You might find this thread has some great exercises for learning how to build a box in proper perspective. You might think it's not important to your study (shading) but since you can't do it perfect you might as well learn how.

Also, make sure you tighten your initial sketch first and check your measurements, like I said your shadow is too large (again the front angle is the best giveaway).

Otherwise good effort, I might try to find a reference without that little stand beneath your shape though, but that's just me.

Didn't really feel like this was worth making a new post for so I have just a quick question.

I'm trying to work on my line control and line economy, so I've been doing studies where I don't let myself pass over the same line twice.

I still, however, remain very loose and "feel out" lines several times on my initial sketch before I go over them with another pass as a line drawing.

Is this a bad habit to keep in my sketching, or does it really matter as long as the line drawing itself is clean?

Thanks

I know this is animu, but I was wondering if anybody had tips for doing backgrounds and such. I know it's probably the least of my worries, but I'm really excited to do a finished piece right now.

Robot feet looks tiny, and the pilot arm look bit anemic. I think you shuold focus on the pilot as the first plane, while robot legs would be a second plane, try changing values a bit
