Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. Or you could muscle through it and end up like Genzoman or worse, your choice. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Remember, this thread is only a place to execute stylization and to draw for fun. This should be supplementary to your art studies. Don't develop an obsession for searching for "the perfect method of learning" and remember to just put mileage down. Don't get stuck learning with only one artist as well: Make everyone your teacher.

Keep calm, take it easy and remember the words of our good friend Glen Vilppu: “No rules, just tools.”

It's a simple question: Why should anyone push towards your idealism? You give critiques wholly advocating that, yet you can't give reason for why other than the standard "it's how professional do it." Which, again, doesn't answer the question. What you call "idealism" is actually anatomy, which is part of the real world and therefore basic for graphic interpretation of the human body. All manga and comics have a good understanding of anatomy.
>It's how professionals do it
No, it's the basis of how the human body is built and therefore how It should be drawn so it makes sense. Proportions can be deformed succesfully with practice and coherence, but cannot be made up.
If anything he helps everyone grow with his posts and constructive critique
If you are to self absorbed to understand it's not about professionalism you should go back to deviantart or /a/Drawfriends to continue the shitposting

Everything in that post hinges on the belief that your method of seeing is naturally the 'right' one. You're fucking idiot and brat to bare. Your idealism isn't the anatomy, it's the way you look at how the anatomy is described. So telling me "this is what anatomy actually is" basically says you don't how to look at things differently then what you're taught, told, or blindly conditioned to.

Which leads the questioning: Why should a completely stranger stop seeing on their own and take up your method, your style. your process of seeing? Apparently you have already stopped looking for yourself and took up another person's style. So tell us, why should we push for *your* idealism in *our* work?

Not him, but they aren't. Whatever they're seeing is literally through their own eyes. It's impossible to see everything exactly the same as another.
>stopped looking for yourself

Your argument is becoming more abstract as you type. People draw/learn to draw the way they want to--for reasons you wouldn't care about, nor should you care about.

Please just stop. Don't ask anymore questions. You aren't: going anywhere with this, getting any answers you want, or accepting any answers given.

>Assuming this is mikufag

You need to stop drawing Miku-heads on all your studies. Just as you have been drawing real bodies to better understand how to stylize them, the same must be done with the head. You don't understand the reasoning or the anatomy behind various stylistic choices, and this is making all your facial features look like formless stickers.

Look at teal's drawing in this thread. Notice how he uses his knowledge of the major forms of the eye to create a stylized eye. You need to be able to do that for the head and all its parts. Once you master that you'll be able to move on from the vacant same-face you've been drawing.

Hey guys, I found some really in depth tutorials/walkthroughs over at iradukai.com on how to make professional quality animu - they even go over the exact brush settings, layer modes that they use as well as traditional tools like lightboxes, what type of mechanical pencil they use as well.

one practical tip about getting better control and stoping chickenscratching:

imagine that you are using a unereasable pen (or actually do it in traditional) and do a bunch of sketches with it.
keep in your head a mindset of "never going back to redraw the line", so all your lines are supposed to be FINAL. if you make a crooked line, just work with it. maybe even draw a sketch of intentional crooked lines and try to make it work.
make a page full of sketches with it.
after it you should be doing better.

It's basically the exact same mentality as you would have in a drawchat or doing oekaki.
it's useful to get into focus and you will automatically stop rushing. at least it works with me.
you really need to stop half assing your drawings and make them more aware and final.

Don't sweat small details like that. You should try these things out for yourself. It's not that hard, but still here are some pointers:

-Zoom: Work at a size you are comfortable with. At the sketching phase zoom out far enough so you can see everything you need to see. Generally it would be wise not to zoom in too much, unless you are working on/correcting small details.

-Brushsize: It doesn't really matter. i'd say at least 8 if you want to have a decent range for line width. Just do whatever looks good to you.

If I may ask, is there any tips on how to handle the "hand & monitor" thing? On paper, you always see your hand going through the picture while you can only see the pointer in the monitor and not actually your hand. It kinda sets me off balance. Does it fix itself over time or is there a trick?

>> No.1523831

>>1523816

Not op, but I've not only grown accustomed to not seeing my hand when drawing, I prefer it that way. And it happened rather quickly. The only time I would choose the Cintiq is when using actual tools (triangles, straight edges). At all other times, not seeing your hand is an advantage. There's no need to reposition yourself so that your hand isn't blocking the drawing, and you don't have to take your eyes off the subject when you are doing a photo study.

There are still some things best done on paper, such as curvilinear perspective, anything involving a compass. There's no intuitive way to do that "by hand" on the computer.

It's just a photoshop manipulation based on form simplification and annons redline of my first attempt, so I could modify the second attempt to fit more realistic proportions, the following step would be to redraw everything from scratch, but im at work with no tablet or even a notebook and pencil.
Maybe this would be helpful for some of you, It was for me!
Row 1: Figure simplification of the head in those poses
Row 2: Anons redline with the figures
Row 3: Second attempt and how it doesn't fit the proportions (the front one DAT HEAD)

You have no idea how to cartoon let alone actually ink it. I hate to blunt and negative but it's people like you who give cartooning a bad rep on how people use it as an excuse to not become a skilled draftsman. Cartooning is an artform that, when it's not bullshit, involves studies of the human and animal figure. You need to study rhythm and improve your line of action. You also need to study form, line, and construction. In fact, if you really want to be good at cartooning, take a few weeks and do nothing but practice the bare necessities of art fundamentals and apply it to your own drawings, but this is scholar level if you ever want to get into a decent job or school, and isn't absolutely necessary if you just study the above. If you don't want to do ANY of that, watch your favorite cartoons and take a few screencaps of your favorite poses. Copy what you think looks good and apply it to your own drawings. This is the absolute bottom of studying that can make your drawings a little more appealing.
But really, if you're going to draw Ren and Stimpy, at least learn the techniques from John K himself.
Go to his blog, John K Stuff, and look up his curriculum on cartooning and his many other helpful postings on stuff like inking, BG painting, color theory, and even storyboarding. Also, look into Preston Blair books.
Get better. You don't want to be a Tom Preston for the rest of your life and never seek improvement.
Cartooning should be a respected artform, but unfortunately you will always get stomped on by other pretentious artists, and no matter the amount of work you put into it, they will always criticize you for being lazy. At your current skill level, you probably deserve their beatings. But if you work hard at it, you won't deserve it, but you'll still get made fun of by "serious" artists. Cartooning isn't a respected artform except by other cartoon artists, and it really blows. But nobody said being a cartoonist is easy; people only assume its easy.

>> No.1524240

>>1524206
you're right. i've actually looked at John K's blog and his posts about art and theories and whatnot are very interesting. I have no intention of neglecting the principles of art and drawing cartoony things just because I think it's easier than everything else because I don't understand how important real life drawing skills are in drawing stylized cartoon drawings.

So, I guess, thank you for wanting to spare me humiliation. I'll go learn the basics before I jump into this kind of thing.

And as I said before, work on your lines because even in sketching, avoiding chicken-scratch lines is beneficial.

Everyone has said this before but as much as you do, don't draw Miku every single time you want to draw. Post an actual study that you did where we don't see a (badly drawn) Miku.

>>1524278
You don't have the available techniques to use these references with understanding. All you are doing is copying what you think the reference looks like.

I wouldn't focus TOO much on loomis/Villpu as a beginner. You more so need Hart and anime how to books since they give you more of an easier way to start anatomy/proportions. Then as you get better work on loomis/Villpu to challenge yourself to get a thorough understanding of realism and so on.

Stop drawing the bodies as if they were realistic bodies. At least not when drawing animu.

Why is everyone trying to draw an animu head with a body that is obviously not attempting to be animu?
My guess is you people are trying to go for some kind of semirealistic style.
But unfortunately that is reserved for people that can do both animu and realism.
You can do neither, you can barely draw, so the result will always be a trainwreck.

The gesture studies are either clean (left) or really messy (right) depending on the time set for each reference: 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes.

Remember when starting gesture studies to not focus on the minor contours when you can't easily decipher flow yet! I had a really hard time doing that and frequently ran past the timer! Really listen to what Proko says in his videos and also in the descriptions on his site.

You're wrong!
It's like saying drawing chibis is fetish art. Sometimes it just seems that way because when you practice anatomy unclothed it'll look questionable. But the same thing would happen when you practice drawing realistic children. It just happens that the moe look is based on children.

But yeah, it's true about the necks. just look at some children and sometimes you'll be amazed at how thin they are in comparison.
One day i looked at those and realized

This is actually true. A fetish originally was an object which is given weird properties by superstitious people.

In some tribes (forgot the name), the father who's undergoing a journey will leave his staff at the front of his house. The staff is supposedly imbued with his "soul" and will keep the entrance safe and look over the wife and kids, like the father would have.

It's often said that at the beginning, all Art was hieratic, and used for whatever mystical properties our ancestors believed it to possess.

Also wouldn't doing it just for the monies (rather than passion for drawing) result in having a bad time at the hand of ridiculous requests? I heard that commission requests in that area are from some of the most autistic people with overly-specific fursonas. Also bitching endlessly about prices.

You win some you lose some when it comes to furry commissions. The key to handling ridiculous clients is to have an iron clad contract and terms of service. Most people fail this step and then end up in a limbo of death.

Also once again you need to pick your friends. The furry community has tons of different people from all walks of life. The only thing they have in common is that they like anthropomorphic animals. Just like /ic/ isn't one entity. Ignore/block the annoying ones, and network with the ones you like.

Anyway to get an idea of some of the problems face with furry are commissions (about both artists and commissioners) I recommend you read Artists Beware. People talk about their problems with various Furaffinity users. Get your popcorn ready.

That actually brings up a good point.
Coloring something (meaning: shading and highlighting something) will make you more aware of form and make your drawings less flat. Sometimes i just use a marker to do this.
It also makes you more aware of your weaknesses once you realize you don't know how to shade certain parts. Because that means you don't understand the planes which further means that you don't understand what is going on with the object.
Of course for animu the whole procedure can be a more lax because some areas are a little bit abstract.

It isn't going to be easy and it definitely won't be quick, but push your brain to understand what those artists have to offer. You'll find drawing to be even more enjoyable after you've acquired the knowledge and techniques to draw what you want.

A general message to aspiring artists: Don't ever think that you should stop attempting to learn how to draw because "it takes too long" or "drawing is just a hobby." The crotch is too high. If you use the measurements of the head you have there, the first 3 landmarks line up more or less in the right place, but the 4th should have the crotch be lower. I'm assuming you use 8 heads, but even if it was less it's still generally the same area of the body.

The leg to the left (her right leg) maybe juts out too far for that angle? the angle it sticks out should also be lower, that protrusion is called the greater trochanter of the femur, search an image of the femur and you'll easily be able to see how the form follows that.

I think you made the scapula muscles (the muscles on the underarm) travel too far down the bicep. Their insertion point should be equal to, or less than the position of the deltoid's insertion.

Try just adjusting the lower body distance, she looks a little squished right now.

I apologize in advance for intruding on your figure but I got curious on how you went about drawing it and I tried to put two and two together. I hope I got the idea right.

oh golly i don't do anything that advanced, though it'd probably save me some time in the long run.

it's usually just a circle with a line down the center of the face, two lines for the chin, then try to draw the eyes so that they're level or make sense.

without a lot of guidelines things end up looking skewed at some point though so it takes some fiddling to get it looking alright.

Mouth is too low and the neck is pretty fucked. I know you hear loomis a lot, but fun with a pencil can reeeeally help you. the head portion can take a day.

that's what i'm saying, i'm almost always messing with the placement of the facial features till the very end, but the results are usually pleasing to me so i don't seek out change.

welp now i just wanna draw sexy girls

my biggest problem with animu/mango is that i typically draw in a western style my default and switching out the symbol set to animu/mango is really difficult for me, so my anime stuff never really looks "pure"...anyone else have this problem?

That's really cute so far! I suggest you fix up the facial features' distances from each other (brought the mouth and nose down for you). Fixed the boobies and made the pose a little less awkward by bringing the arm in. I think you still have a ways to go with the contours on your torso though. Keep up anatomy studies, so you can draw duh sexeh ladies!

You just need some time to adapt to a lot of anime/mango features. I suggest you browse through pixiv and find some artists that you can look up to!

>> No.1525320

>>1525316

thanks! the torso looks much better the way you drew it, but the mouth brought down that low looks kinda strange to me (i like that mango style where the mouths are closer to the nose, it looks cuter imo, so i want to emulate that) but yeah whoa her stomach looks much better, much appreciation

The same way you'd draw clothes on any other grill. Do a lot of drapery studies

>> No.1525365

you're right, that is shitty. if you know it's shitty why did you post it? the purpose of a redline is to teach the original artist how to draw their thing better, not demonstrate how inept you are yourself.

He does contours from start because he a lot of poses are on his head.

If you can do that, then go to construction

yeah because ears clearly are that shape and sit that highly on the neck, boobs are naturally cleavage'd, and that little torso would clearly be visible.
