You're getting ahead of yourself with textures and detail. I think you should take a step back and re-evaluate your value organization. Here is a quick paintover showing how you might want to simplify the value structure so the image has a clear read. Currently it is too dark overall and not well defined.

Also, I am not a fan of the soft brush over the lights like that. Be careful too to not have pure white highlights then everything else pure black. get some nice middle values in there, even if the painting is low key.

Oh, and the staircase looks a bit funny. I think it might be a bit steep or something, I dunno.

Thanks, I´m learning it the hard way so I will take it into consideration next time.

I still like it it´s just a shame that I can´t find a proper way to add colour.

Perhaps this time the lower part looks ok, dimension-wise of course, I really need a reference for this kind of dress.

>>1522339
I think you really need to start adding much more darker values, the left side of her face could be a bit thinner, the jaw on the right side shows a more acute angle than the one on your painting and I think you can afford to show the other teeth.

A WIP, took me about 2 and a half hour so far.
Opinions and critique is welcomed. I'm pretty sure the anatomy is fucked up.

All in all it's still very rough and sketchy, and haven't gotten to shading it yet. But maybe I should keep it sketchy? It doesn't look so bad I guess.

It really is. I don't know where to start, Anon. Head is small, her torso and arms are very long and her feet look pretty fucked as well. You also obviously hid the hands. Work on that line confidence as well.

Thanks for the tips.

I made her head a little bit bigger, and removed some of the length of her torso/arms. Not quite sure about how to fix the legs/feet though. Haven't adjusted the color yet, so black and white will have to do. Compare it to the other one, and see how it's changed. Oh, and I also made her right hand more visible. Keeping her left hand in the robe, because that's kind of where I want it to be.

Your anatomy is still fucked. Her whole body gets smaller and smaller as it goes up to the head. The head is still too small, neck too short, shoulders should be wider than the chest, chest should idealistic be as wide as the hips. Her right forearm looks to be half the length of her arm, they should be the same length.

As the other anon suggested, you should read up on anatomy and gestures.

there are two ways to do it!
one is being the one the other anon mentioned. Using a very soft round brush at low opactiy and sloooowly blending them together, be careful not to ruin our edges though!

The other possibillity is more work heavy.
Learn how to describe form with brushstrokes.
You did okay on that, but could be way better.
make use of the transfer option and use a square brush here and there.
put down the pencil, press hard and do the stroke while reducing the pressure as you go, this way the values or colour will automaticly fade into the other. Its a lot of work, but it will look brilliant if you can pull it of.
Just think of it traditionally.

>Always overpaint edges. never try to closen up two surfaces edges to each other. Be rough and paint over one colour with the other, also creating mixed colours (Be careful not to make it look muddy)

For the fine work you can always go and use the same hard brush on low opacity to correct some of the spots.

The thing with the soft round is, its gonna get rid of all the strokes and makes things look very odd and boring. Ita painting after all, so dont hesitate to show brushwork and heavy strokes. All you need to learn is to use them wisely.

Look up the Blast rule for paintings (google it)
Also look up the sargent notes on goodbrush.com
Gonna help you a lot and you will hopefully grasp the concept behind good brushwork. Its an overall nice read anyway.

Good luck, and off to work with you!

Welcome, please ignore the trolls and assholes.
>Quite what I'm getting into...
Basically /ic/ is full of people who want to get good enough at art to sell their shit and work professionally. If you're not in it for the long haul, you're probably going to be discriminated against. You'll still pick up some shit, but again, don't feed the trolls/assholes.
>Struggling to find my style...
You won't "find your style," because a style is something that develops naturally. You can choose to emulate the styles of other artists if you want, but your "style" is something that accumulates from everything you've learned about art - the way you lay down lines, the way you treat light, the way you approach values, etc.. Don't worry about your style, because whether you want it or not, you've already got your style - all you can do at this point is shape it, emulate other artists, or focus on defining a set of rules that could be considered stylized (anime, pinup, etc.). - but I recommend you don't worry about that for a while.
>Did this on a whim . . . ten/fifteen minutes.
If you're not used to drawing (which judging by your work, you're not) then ten/fifteen minutes may seem like a solid chunk of time to draw. It's not, some artists spend several hours, even days completing a work of art. Doodling is fine, being creative is great, but don't hide behind a short period of time as an excuse for not knowing how to take your work further. You've got potential, you could hone your potential by learning more or you could continue to draw using what you know - but either way it's bad (not trying to attack you, just being frank here).

If you're already in the process of learning - great! You don't need to dedicate your life to art to want to improve the hobby, but learning about a subject is the only way to know more about it, and in terms of graphic arts, practice and learning are the only ways you'll improve.

Hi! Is the portfolio for a job or a school?

I'm not sure about the abdomen, there's a lot of anatomical problems that aren't going to be solved in a while. Them aside I think you should focus on refining the shapes.

You have an idea of what you want to make, like your crysis kind of soldier. Find a light source then use to show us what objects or armour he is wearing. Just looking at his face I'm not quite sure what it is. How about angling his head a bit (still having his eyes forwards) to show what shape it is? What is inside his visor? If they are two vertical lightsources, try to look at some reference on how that actually looks when they are behind a small transparent piece of glass.

Best of luck with the portfolio!

I think you should focus on drawing him from one angle first, no offense.

Try to think about what shape every item on him is and then use light to show it. It seems there's a lot of just brush strokes instead of shapes right now.

A good thing to do if you are not sure yourself (it happens a lot) is to "boxify" him. Ignore the texture and materials, paint him like a lowpoly 3d model or even as a wireframe and then you will have an easier time finding where the light will go.

Some of the most valuable stuff from the last month and a half. I'm obsessed with finding exact methods of doing individual things (like, at the top, somehow consistent, smooth pencil gradient and texture) instead of producing anything resembling finished artwork. Hope it all will come together one day.

Am I approaching this the right way to some extent?

>I feel like I've learned quite a few things with it.

Well how can you know for sure if you don't start a new drawing and apply what you think you've learned?

>I don't have a lot of time available

Does it really take you much more than an hour just to do another black and white sketch? Even if you could just spend like 20 fucking minutes on a rough sketch and see if you can lay down the proportions and shit correctly

Why would the spacing show if you scale down your artwork? Whatever, that never happens to me anyway, yes I actually do resize my shit after

Any help?

Obviously hair, nose, cheek (how do I make it look like it is a 3D form and not just flat as it seems to be now, the left cheek from our point of view, I have tried and failed) and mouth need more work. Should they be near perfect at this stage, or is it easier to fix the forms later, after glazing?
