LIVING CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE FINE ART PAINTER THREAD (Non-Digital)

>Please read:

•Living = Artist is alive and actively producing art.
•Contemporary = Work produced from roughly 1965 onward.
•Figurative = Contains some recognizable objects from life (or from myth, etc.)
•Fine Art = Gallery/Museum type work rather than illustration made to go with text or on products, etc..
•Non-Digital = Using physical paint, exclusively.

THIS IS NOT FOR YOUR OWN WORK!

This is for the education, enjoyment, and inspiration of the board.
Please feel free to contribute, and please include the artist's name, and show us the biggest and clearest example of the piece possible.
Extra credit for including the medium and/or the name of the painting and/or the year it was created.
PLEASE DON'T FLOOD with more than three or so pieces by the same artist.

Note: There is a sister thread for more traditionalist subject matter/style/technique:
>>1521637

(Some work may be in a grey area which makes it appropriate for either thread.)

>Figurative art, sometimes written as figurativism, describes artwork—particularly paintings and sculptures—which are clearly derived from real object sources, and are therefore by definition representational. "Figurative art" is often defined in contrast to abstract art:

>Since the arrival of abstract art the term figurative has been used to refer to any form of modern art that retains strong references to the real world.

This thread is for sharing art, not arguing.

The definition and widespread understanding of "figurative art" is what it is. It may cause confusion due to containing most of the word "figure", which may lead one to think of the human figure. Compounding this confusion could be the fact that the human figure has been by far the most popular subject of human art for thousands of years.

If you don't wish to contribute to the thread because you don't like the definition of the term, that's OK, but please be kind enough not to derail it.

you'll note the only thing that isn't a person there is from the basically incorrect wikipedia page you quoted.

some terms have special meanings in the art world. this ones a bit confusing because it refers to art but isn't an art term.

think of the special meaning of 'theory' in science, if you'd like a comparison.

it's sort of an important distinction because of the way 'the art world' treats abstraction compared to your average pleb on the street.

everything is abstracted quite a bit even the 'realistic' stuff. so, in art you talk about naturalism and levels of abstraction. you don't say, 'this is abstract', 'this is not' because it's imposing a black and white way of seeing onto what to someone with even a tiny bit of experience looks to be a very fine gradient. not to mention different elements in one work can be abstracted to different levels and in different ways.

just don't go up to someone in the fine arts and say, 'i'm a figurative artists i paint landscapes.' because you'll look like an idiot.

hope that's cleared it up a bit.

Hm, and what's pic related? Ah yes, it's the Oxford Dictionary definition of Figurative Art, along with the Collins Definition, and the Longman.

The Oxford entry, contrasted with the book you cite, shows that while the common definition of Figurative Art is the same as Representational Art, a minority of people, like the curator of that book, use a somewhat different definition.

no i promise i'm trying to help that guy or you or whoever.

if you describe yourself as a figurative artist and you mean you do killer still lives, you'll be laughed out of the building!

look at the google search results, they're based on how people use language.

i will concede of course that 'figurative art' as an adjectival phrase CAN mean what you mean [remember i said 'generally' in my original post] but it's not commonly used like that amongst the art community. but a 'figurative artist' and describing a work of art as 'figurative' both mean it's a human figure, if you are talking in art 'jargon' naturally.

Because that's the idea of the thread. To look at living, working artists. The people who are making paintings today. We see Beksinski every day on /ic/, so that's a perfect example of why this thread has parameters. You can talk about any other artists at any time. This is figurative, which you can probably see fairly easily. He bases some of his work on historical art.

In my opinion, so far, all but these images have been far too graphic, even in their "painterliness". They fit more into what OP would call illustration. Far too cliche. Some even look more like bedroom wall posters than fine art

Attached is Dino Valls, who essentially communicates new things with the older centuries of painting, but whose majority of work I consider quite boring

Just my opinion. I don't know of many living painters I respect beyond their drawing knowledge and colour theory

>In my opinion, so far, all but these images have been far too graphic, even in their "painterliness". They fit more into what OP would call illustration.

OP here. I disagree, so please speak only for yourself.

I'd add that it's not necessarily the point of these paintings to look like pre-modern art. If any have influence from illustration or graphic design, without actually being either of those things, then they are completely valid for the purposes of this thread.

True in a layman's sense, but in the art world the term "contemporary" denotes a specific era of art history. There are contemporary artists who worked a decade ago and are dead in the present, that's why OP had to include additional specifications.

I hear you, and I agree about another thread (which is why I called this 1.0), but from my perspective I don't see the point of blasting through a thread, dumping a zillion artists all at once which nobody gets to see or appreciate, then telling people to look at the archive, which most of them won't do.

I think easy and steady is the way to appreciate and disseminate artwork.

> I don't see the point of blasting through a thread, dumping a zillion artists all at once which nobody gets to see or appreciate, then telling people to look at the archive
>I think easy and steady is the way to appreciate and disseminate artwork.

I just know from experience that if you post a lot of one artist people tend to get biased-- I gave you that option because I thought it would be helpful-- not many people would do that even though it has a lot of different blogs and groups so I wouldn't be the only one posting.

It was so I could avoid being the only one in the whole thread posting anything because from what I see the artists being posted in long succession happen to relatively well-known painters.

I wanted to show that there an asinine amount of unknown artists that do figurative work-- also; I thought that if you really appreciated a certain artist you'd google them and look at all of their work-- there is no way to show contemporary art without showing a multitude of artists because they don't all operate with the same ideas or motifs.

Slow and steady acts against this somewhat because you didn't mention you wanted discussion or anything-- I just posted a lot because I thought this was SHARING. Besides-- when are you going to run into modern artists that frequently share their sketches and studies?

>> No.1525664

>>1525661
But-- I could care less. If you don't want to look up these artists it stands against me to post them anyways if you're just going to use this thread as a primary way of only admiring artists you look up to and not looking at people active in the field.

Don't worry about whiners anon, it's not like it costs anything to create a new thread. And there are plenty of contemporary artists out there, certainly enough to fill two threads with...
I think posting 2-4 images by an artist is ideal, they can google if they want to see further work, and providing more than one image gives a better idea of their oeuvre.

tl;dr Threads are made for posting images!
This is an image board!

"Whiners"? I made the thread. I said it would be better not to flood it so that people have a chance to see and savor the art. The internet is already a flood of images. The fact that threads cost nothing isn't really relevant. By that logic you could just start your own thread for the purpose of filling it as quickly as possible.

I set out to establish a loose framework so that we could possibly have a tradition of these threads as we do with draw threads. Since this is the first one I'm clarifying my idea with the one or two people here who share a knowledge of the subject.

what he does especially well is texture, which is something you don't see much mention of on /ic/. i guess people just say rendering, but there are four fundamentals of rendering..atmosphere,form,texture,light.
mr. cotton does them all to a very high standard obviously but the texture is what sells it.

Also, some artists like the sensation of painting with their arms instead of their wrists. The sensation can be a big part of the process and the satisfaction of it.

you never need to paint with your wrist, if you can't make your arm do it you aren't sitting right.

Obviously you CAN use more limb than just your wrist, but are you seriously going to argue that painting a 9" x 12" panel naturally involves more full arm movement than a 60" x 72" canvas? Or are you posing a contrary position just to be difficult?

I'm remembering why I don't post more often. People feel a need to be argumentative just because they have have a forum.

i just mean you can use your arm for the tiniest detail if you want, the shoulder can make movements just as fine as the wrist, only it has more range. of course with a bigger panel you move your arm more but not more frequently.

if you want to use your wrist that's fine, but it's just a bad habit from writing.

For many I'd agree. For me, at this point, it's just another joint in the finger>wrist>elbow>shoulder>other body mechanics>brain signal chain. Again, I do agree that many use the wrist as a crutch, but it's a very effective tool for detail work.

it's a less effective tool. in fact it tends to cause all sorts of errors, people 'dig' the line where the line has varying pressure, they 'whip' the line wherein in pulling the pencil off the page they sort of add a little whipping motion and include a little tail. they curve lines which were not intended to be curved because of the short axis of rotation on the wrist.

but you know as i said you can use your wrist if you like, i know it feels better. and as long as it works it works. but it simply isn't the best way to do things.

you can substitute line for stroke, if you want to put it in a panting context :p and the whipping thing is way worse in paint.
