No really, there is no progress there. Hid the face, hid the feet, hid most of the details of the body, and didn't even bother with the hands. The only difference there is is that the person added scenery around the character.

maybe it looks that way.. it was mostly a sketch, and i didn't want to detail to much the feet and hands areas, for the focal point of the image is the head. The hiding of the face was a design decision. I agree it may look that way however

That did not work very well because hands and feet lack necessary detail and jump out too much because of that.

Really? Not just lack of skill-decision?

I actually have a few landscape pieces, but they're so huge that when shrunken down to fit, all the details get lost so I ended up not including it in. But I do agree, I need to do more landscapes, which I actually find more entertaining than figures right now.

That is not regressing, I don't believe one can ever regress. You did not even finish the block in stage. I don't know the time frame between '12 and '13 for you. But if you've been studying frequently. I see improvement. It looks like you are seeing shapes instead of details, and your understanding of color temps are visible. Keep it up.
>>1522634
He did not finish obviously, also I'd say the shape of the castle, reveals his weakness in perspective and architecture. I understand though, why it may appear he has regressed, but that is not the case.

I believe there are marks of 'regress'. Stagnation, neglecting your craft for a long time. Still, everyone improves, even just observing nature and being alive. When you come back you cannot draw for at least a few weeks, everything is so strange. However, your abilities snap back and even improve slightly.

There are probably other things that fool us into believing someone has regressed. Possibly, not pushing a painting not challenging yourself enough or treating the subject seriously, especially in comparison to older work that shows greater promise. Another sign could be, your attempt at dumping habits or comforts, something basic like going from iconographic drawing to observation. How you approach your line work. Maybe you fell into a bad habit, and once you started getting instruction, your mistakes were revealed, and it appears like regression. You could draw an almost geometric circle with a hairy line, now you attempt it with a confident line and you have a lopsided oval that does not close, but in time your ellipses become elegant. Lastly, an injury, or great emotional psychological stress of course, but even then Frazetta switched to his recessive hand.

But the more studies you do and the more you draw from your mind you will build up creativity and intuition and youd be surprised how much more fun drawing becomes when you can just sit there and create what appeals to you without looking at photos and stressing! You actually show improvement, which seems to be rare in this kind of thread. But...

Keep in mind the human face isn't one color. Even people with dark skin have a bit of redness on their nose and cheeks.

Also lets see some faces from different angles, not just bland three-quarter view. Drawing characters from unique and dramatic angles helps to capture the mood of the character (like a villainous character viewed from below and to the side with the lighting from below) and make them more interesting and exciting.

Also the blond girl who seems to be smiling--frankly--looks more like she's trying to smile but the left side of her face is sagging at the same time. Study facial expressions more. Google people, women and men smiling.

Seriously, you should use a ref. Most of your learning will come from focused study. Working without refs is a great way to test what you retain. If this is as far as you can take it, then that's that. Do a new one from a ref (preferably a mirror) and choose something to focus on, whether it's values, proportions, edge control, brush economy, value massing, light properties, etc.

This x1,000, I wish it was easier for people to grasp the important of this. I've been pushing myself 6+ hours a day actually STUDYING since the first of this month and I've improved more in the last 19 days than I have in the previous 3 months.

Was gonna say the font reminded me of Invader Zim when juxtaposed with that art style and how it was self-consciously defacing or "ironically bad" font choice. But then I thought you might think that was a good thing and keep using that font, or even make it even more Zim-like.

"NO. I want your comic to be cool." It reminds me of independent comics, especially the ones in Kabuishi's Flight anthology.

I see no real improvement from 2012 to 2013--namely a lack of ability to render, poor understanding of perspective and VERY poor use of values.

Your best work is the windmill one and that's still poor in value usage and color and confusing because the windmill is off in the distance and it's doorway is only slightly smaller than the one in the foreground, which makes no sense and confuses where it belongs on the picture plane. Nor does the house in the midground match-up proportionally with the one in the foreground. Go back to successful drawing and study perspective please.

The two at the bottom are way too blocky and show a poor use of composition, color theory, and rendering ability. The bottom right one has the same values throughout, even on the buildings in the distance, which confuses the focal point. Also rocks and stone won't just be lit with the same color as the light source because they're not highly reflective, like metal, but would instead show a great deal of 'local color'.

Do studies of a similar subject before trying a new illustration. Also study composition. Get the book Framed Ink, as it covers the basics of composition.

Currently, I only ever work on these for a single day. It keeps the ideas fresh and more importantly, I don't start hating a single project, wishing it could be finished already. Some days I have more time to put towards painting, other days not so much. I have done paintings that I render to a stage which I consider complete, but I did not include them because I did not prefer them, for one reason or another; in this case it is the cliche color scheme. Also, is my study not rendered?

Also, out of curiosity, could I see some of your fully rendered paintings?

This book should be in every library for aspiring illustrators and artists, as it is 1) a slim read 2) written in the most simplified manner possible 3) covers the basics of design, composition, story-telling and color usage:

Picture This: How Pictures Work

I've probably learned the most from this book than any other and you can read it in about two hours sitting. It costs 3 bucks used on Amazon and is worth many times that much.

For many aspects of color:
Color and Light by James Gurney
Also, if you don't already have it, get Imaginative Realism by Gurney. If you're wanting to paint the fantastical, or just correctly create images in general, both these books are absolutely indispensable. There's no excuse not to have them in your library.

For color theory:
Color Design Workbook: A Real World Guide to Using Color in Graphic Design
It covers the basics of color theory and gives various guides to helpful color combinations.

For color harmony:
Color Harmony Workbook: A Workbook and Guide to Creative Color Combinations

And one of the best tools for using colors is to get a cheap color-wheel at an art store and tape it to your desk or where ever you paint and use it to pick quality color swatches. Good luck.

While age isn't that relevant (though it probably becomes harder as time goes on due to the decrease in grey matter) some people just progress faster than others for some reason or another. I don't think age matters too much, the main reason why you don't get many great artists starting in their twenties or later though is that to get good requires dedication, which means having a passion about art. If you have enough passion to spend the time learning you're very likely to find it young.

Most people who start in their twenties are more interested in the finished product and the recognition than the actual process of drawing.

That being said, if you do discover a passion for drawing it probably is easier in your twenties, generally you're more focused, can afford materials and books easier, have more control over your spare time, can travel, etc.

You definitely have gotten better at making folds look believable. Also, your composition has gotten better too.

You seem more confident with your style. Using solid blocks of color to portray lighting looks better than your outline, which carries no weight and flattens your illustration.

Obvious anatomical hiccups aside, I think you should definitely keep going in your current direction.

>> No.1535607

>>1535595
You need a good amount of basic drawing skills to be creative, and traditional figure drawing is great at teaching you those skills. You become creative by developing your own style on top of those skills, not by ignoring them.

It's for that reason that most art schools teach figure drawing, gesture drawing, perspective, color theory, visual composition, art history and many more.

You can't really be a postmodernist if you don't understand what you're deconstructing. You can't really be creative if you don't understand what's the norm.

What Loomis teaches is a means to an end, not the end itself.

It's important to realize that training should help you understand what you're doing better, not taking away from it. It gives you a different viewpoint to analyze and contextualize your own style. And you can then push/refine it even further.

Ultimately, as long as an illustration itself looks good and is interesting, nothing else really matters.
