Do you know any place where I can learn to draw like Toriyama? I really like Osamu Tezuka as well. I'm a very big fan of their drawing, they mix cartoonish and anime elements perfectly together. It's way different than everything I've ever seen before and most tutorial only show the "modern" way

Remember, this thread is only a place to execute muh styles and to draw animu/cartoons for fun. This should be supplementary to your art studies. Make sure you're drawing real figures and practicing anatomy/proportions, gestures, and lighting because that knowledge is what will make all your art better.

The drawthread and sketchthread have to mountains of resources you could scan through. Don't get in obsessed in looking for "the perfect method of learning" and remember to just draw. Also, don't get stuck in learning with one artist as well - make everyone your teacher.

Usually they're overwhelmed by the information (which really isn't that much) so hopefully emphasizing videos like Proko's and ctrl+paint, as well as giving them examples from anime-like sources (hitokaku, 0033) they'll be more encouraged to get their shit together instead of posting stuff that a middle schooler could have drawn.

Before you start a session of drawing, have a warm-up session. This is a little be too scheduled for my taste, but maybe it's what you need.

1. Draw a line, 2 inches long, as straight as you can with a ruler
2. Go over said line 8 times, try not to make the line any thicker
3. Repeat 10 times

Now do that with longer lines, waves, circles, curves, zig-zags, etc until you fill up a page/canvas.

See how on the reference the head and the upper torso is a little tilted to the back? You lost it when you stylized it.

It's a modified Vilpuu "beanism".

Your cross-contours are horrendous, by the way. I don't say that to offend.

A few pointers

1. Study perspective. You still aren't fully thinking in form. Perspective, while not meticulously used in figure construction, will help you better understand how to think 3-dimensionally, which will in turn help you understand what a cross-contour actually is (a perspective shorthand)

2. Once you solidify your understanding of form, draw your cross-contours COMPLETELY around the form. This will help you see the volume. You can always erase these lines later, especially if you draw digitally. Note: you don't have to overdo your cross-contours. Just a few will suffice.

3. The line of action and the spine are not always one in the same. Proko's gesture videos as well as the Hampton lectures (yes, they exist, I may seed them tomorrow) to understand gesture and when it is appropriate to include the spine in your line of action. Think more of the movement instead of actual body parts.

I'm not one to draw up anything at the moment, but here's an image from an anon a while back that sums up what I said about 1 and 2. Notice how in the second sphere, anon draws entirely around the sphere instead of just using dinky crosses. He has a clear understanding of perspective and it helps him establish forms, even spheres which have no edges which are ideal in perspective.

This is weird dude. It's not even anime, no stylization or allowing for imagination it's just awkward and kind of sickening. I figured the appeal to loli was more about the innocence and the acting young, but not actually BEING young. Yeah I know, the anime loli tend to be pretty young but it's stylized enough to make a distinction from an actual child. This is awkward/uncomfortable territory and wreaks of the artist having a couple of mental issues. Not saying you CAN'T draw this stuff or even shouldn't but it's just... I dunno. Am I alone on this?

>> No.1518481

>>1518476
I'm not the poster who did the colouring.

Pay attention to the subtle changes in hue and variations in hard/soft blending.

For example, the robe's base colour is a cold purple/grey, with very soft warm colours mixed in. Use a large soft brush and dab a brownish red or orange. Do plenty of colour picking and don't stick to the shades you began with. It's also nice to adjust the hue of your shade for more vibrance.

Another example, notice the robe casts a hard shadow on the leg. However, the values of the legs themselves are blended softly.

Just some basic stuff about values and colour harmony. I hope it helped.

>I figured the appeal to loli was more about the innocence and the acting young, but not actually BEING young. Yeah I know, the anime loli tend to be pretty young but it's stylized enough to make a distinction from an actual child.
Yeah well, no. Loli is preteen girls.

>> No.1518484

>>1518479
I'm the OP,
No you are obviously not alone in this, about 99/100 men are with you the other is a pedofile but just like homophillia, it's not a mental issue its an orientation you are born with (its been removed from the manual of mental sicknesses this year, the same manual homophillia was in). I somewhat understand your discomfort, I dont feel comfortable looking at two men kissing but to think it's dangerous, to be scared of it is wrong. A sane person never wants to go against the will of their sexual partner. The pedosexuals you hear on the news are 9/10 times people with personality disorders, NOT pedofiles. Now please keep it related to drawings regardless of subject matter. Cartoon lines and anime, it doesn't make much difference to me.

>> No.1518491

>>1518482
When did I say that? It's not like everybody who creates things I dislike automatically have mental issues. I believe you're missing the point.

While loli is pre-teen girls, they're not real. The stylization helps to make this distinction. It's the same kind of distortion used to make talking rabbits and aliens. That's not how it is in reality. What he's doing is just kind of... mirroring reality.

"murderers can't help their urges either" that's why people who actually do it are INSANE, but normal people dont even though we might have hated someone so much we think of murdering them. That's the difference, having control over your urges. Shit, I'd say I have MORE control over my feelings than most because I deal with them everyday, and you know what, it's not even hard anymore...and drawing helps. I've worked at an institute for the criminally insane, there is no help, if they are insane they will have no control over their urges. The vast majority of pedos are sane and never have sex with children but their difficulties are more towards harming themselves because of depression. There is even a helpline for pedos struggling with their urges (for whatever reason) but only in a few countries in europe. hopefully it will be in the US as well. They're fucking up the board already. Starting random threads on how to draw anime heads or anime hair or asking for critiques on their style. They post their shit in here praying for a redline, and when they don't get it--because everybody else are too busy wanking over a loli, futa, or emo post--they go over to the draw threads and meticulously post repeatedly. For example there is this guy working on the same face and posting endlessly the smallest details. He started in these threads way before the derailing.

The problem isn't the the animu subject, it's the people. This has nothing to do with these threads being bad because they're animu. They're bad because of the kind of people doing them are horrible people for this entire board. They bring their private culture and mannerisms from /a/ to here and expect everybody else to kowtow in suit.

The thing about asking for a critique is a fucking lie.

So do the majority of fan artists just use reference poses to make their shit?
I always feel guilty when I draw straight from a reference, but I just can't make up dynamic poses in my head, and I feel you learn more from just copying references then just studying vilppu/loomis canon and making shitty gestures with them. (Not saying they're bad tools.)

>So do the majority of fan artists just use reference poses to make their shit?
they don't. but it depends on what level they want to work at and how skilled they are in general.

if you want to learn how to draw naturally you really have to think about anime more in terms of cartooning than realistic poses.

-think more in terms of cartooning
-sketch a lot. A LOT.
-simplify your figures (heavily) if it's too hard. you can always add more anatomy once you understand the gist of the basic body structure.

>> No.1519135

>>1519128
pic kinda related.
most people bite off way more than they can chew. especially if they try to draw real people from imagination. for animu it's not even necessary to have that level of skill.
and even if you want that level of skill, you're not going to get it with that kind of approach.
drawing from imagination is all about understanding. and if you don't even understand how to draw stickmen from imagination, real people from imagination will be too high of a hurdle.

you can already express yourself freely with even the most basic anatomy, as long as you learn how to sketch freely.
again pic related. just look at how whacky the feet and arms look like.

Thanks.
I've been in a slump for a long time.
I've taken several live figure drawing classes for the last few years and feel my knowledge of figure drawing has improved, but whenever I sit down and try to draw from imagination it's a complete blank. It's nearly impossible for me to sketch freely because I obsess over making something perfect. Using references I guess is just a clutch for me because the answer for everything is sitting in front of me.
I guess I'll just try to simplify what I do.
