Indeed you do.
Assuming you did this with a reference?
If so - try again. sketch only! No values, no colours.
Its way to early for you to try and get goot finished results. Once your drawings are okay, you can start painting in values, then colour.

Its just the most effective way.
If you keep doing full paintings and no studies and dont really learn anything, it costs unnessasary energy and time.

i saw that tiny watermark afterwards. i was hoping it was a still from a movie or something.
as for your study, i think its of utmost importance while rendering extreme lighting, where most of what your drawing is the defined forms of the shadows, to have a thorough understanding of whats going on below the shadows before you drape them upon the form. for example, youve created a pointed chin where the light has highlighted, instead of rendering that ponted light as being the apex of the form of her chin. I did a redline of roughly what form is under tht light and shadow but i suggest you find it yourself, draw it, and then cast those shadows off of it so that your study is more of a learning experience :3

I don't like his stuff in general because he paints almost everything in extreme detail. The goal of a painter is not to create an illusion by replicating reality in all its exactness, but rather create an illusion by replicating a HUMAN MIND'S interpretation of that reality. Humans don't see everything in a canvas with extreme focus and detail. We lose the information that is not within our focus. This is a human aspect that he just doesn't have in his work. He works like a cyborg camera.

I totally disagree. Honestly, a painter shouldn't be restricted by any goal. Alg and co do fine pieces BEFORE getting into the details.

I mean, like you said, humans don't see all the detail in a painting, so why should it matter if they go into extreme detail (I wouldn't even call their stuff extreme detail, it's pretty standard compared to other artists)

Sorry, that's not what I meant to say. I meant to say we don't see everything in extreme detail/sharpness in real life. It matters if you put in a ton of detail into a painting or not because we are working on a single 2d plane.

Another point I'd like to make about painting like a human versus painting like a camera: High Speed cameras and Motion. A high speed camera will capture a running/jumping person perfectly clear and in extreme detail, but our eyes do not see motion like that. Things get blurred, so paint it that way.

>a painter shouldn't be restricted by any goal

But the thing is, if part of a painter's goal is not to paint like a human, instead of replicating like a camera, why paint at all? You can take a photograph that will look 100x better.

I know what you mean. A lot of appleflinger's work is very 'clinical' and lifeless. A lot of it is due to his approach with lassos and masks, which he supposedly does to minimize wrist strain. The result is a lack of vibrant and efficient brushwork and stale edge control - leading to a 'made by a program' instead of a 'created by a painter' feel IMO.

Aside from that and his distinctive 'same-face', I do enjoy his work a lot. He does seem to have plateaued a bit compared to his early years online, which is a bummer.

Guy who did Mark O'Mara here. Did this painting of a friend. I don't really into oils often, so getting a feel for them in ArtRage took a bit. The extent of the critique I've gotten so far has revolved around the background, which is admittedly filler, and my work on her right eye, which was in the shade in the photo. I'm proud of it, but that doesn't mean it's anything special. She liked it, that's really all that matters there. Still, I'd like to get better.

Again, I REALLY think you're exaggerating Alg and co's level of detail. I can go into their gallery and, unless it's a still life, I can guarantee you it will have painterly qualities.

Also, I forget the location, but on the DeviantArt of a hyperrealist called "Nimra", one of his journals explains why he does hyperrealism instead of taking a photo.

Either way, I really don't see a problem with hyperdetail in things like fantasy or sci-fi paintings, as they offer a level of detail for something that isn't real.

Yeah, it really sucks, because I actually like his older work.

> I REALLY think you're exaggerating Alg and co's level of detail.
I'm probably accidentally giving that message. I was not trying to say that he was going for a hyper realistic approach, but rather an "all equal detail/sharpness" approach (Everything in the frame being of the same detail/sharpness level).
>Nimra
Took a look and, yeah, I actually don't like his work at all.

By the way, I hope I'm not giving the impression that I hate his stuff or that no one should like it. But I bet that, if he didn't get double tendinitis, he would have rather painted in a more painterly way given the choice.

>I'm not a very good artist.
If you do art to get better I'd then suggest you go back to fundamentals along with simple subjects for a while longer.

>so it's a mess of layers and ideas
No. No mess of layers please.
I know a lot of ppl say it doesnt really matter wether you use 1 layer or 100. It really doesn't once you know what you do. Before that, stick to a few layers. 3 is good. 1 foreground - 1 midground - 1 background for example.
It forces you to overpaint stuff and try new things out.

>Should I add something? And beside that, I don't know if to draw a crypt with undeads, an underground forest, or anything else. :c
No! - try your favourite vegetable or fruit as a stillife. Observe the reference well. take care of good colours, light, values and composition.

Concerning the picture you uploaded:
- Draw less. Paint more. Simple and big strokes. Those criss-corss sketching lines are okay for proper pencil sketches. not for this.

- Dont do those messy pure black outlines either please.
The birck for example. Do a full plain wall first. then paint the bricks on top of it one by one.

Wings are okay aswell. The Hair - not so much.
Less fine lines, more big shapes with huge strokes. Refine some areas afterwards if you feel the need for it. But with the style you go fore big strokes would do just fine.

The white background: No - don't do it...

Anatomy wise: Well since you have hidden most of it I guess its okay.
The Asscheeks are a bit off though. So is her left leg. I feel it drops to the floor to quickly.

If its anime you go for or come from it looks nice so far though.

I guess you only need to make softer transitions between the values, blending the colors with the color picker and a brush that's got some opacity. Only a personal taste thing though, but I prefer when you can see the brush strokes.

Thanks, and I know the lips are really bad. I wasn't sure how to render them because I usually just cross-hatch things when I do portraits and never really put all that much effort into the lips. I'll go back and fix what you said.

you have got the proportions almost down, i suggest you pay more attention to how you make you're marks , to portray certain elements/features of the face.

like, handlebar mustaches do not have a border line in real life, so why in your pic?

the marks are in the correct places but the marks are incorrect in themselves for showing the values they should.

the marks you are leaving are just scratchy, ugly and take away from the accuracy you have shown in the proportions.

Guys I just don't know anymore. I want to be able to draw human beings, I do. I thought I was really starting to get good a few days ago, but I'm noticing now I still lack the extremely important skill of seeing the "whole" of my subject, and I'll draw parts of the body or whatever it is I'm looking at hideously out of proportion to the rest of the drawing. I basically feel like I can't draw a fucking thing in the world. Look at the difference in size of the two legs at the rightmost drawing. I can notice things like that only immediately after drawing them, but I don't know what to do to prevent it. I'm sure eliminating these kinds of problems is one of the main benefits of seeing larger forms in more intricate and detailed subjects, and I'm trying to do that, but I just fucking can't, even when I'm actually just drawing basic geometric shapes (I'm the first reply to this thread) I manage to fuck up the entire proportion, scale, dimensions, everything that you NEED to have a grasp on in order to make any drawing look anywhere near the way you want it to. I know the importance of all of these principles, but somehow knowing is not enough for me to even begin to apply that knowledge. I take my time with my drawings, I observe, and really carefully place my lines and angles, and try to analyze and generate an internal dialogue that will help me to most accurately portray what it is I'm trying to portray. I'm still trying hard every day, and I'm going to go back to it once I'm done writing this, but I just don't know, guys.

>>1515222
you need to slow down. Nobody can draw a perfect figure within a few minutes but it looks like you believe someone with the required knowledge and some practice should be able to do that.
Figure drawing and everything else should be approached in steps (procedual drawing) rather than the type of drawing where every line is a finished line.
If something is wrong and you see that, it's up to you to fix that. Learn from your mistakes.
Give "The Vilppu Drawing Manual" a try. You go through 12 lessons (every week one if you want) from the sphere over proportions and anatomay up to a finished drawing in tone. You should stick to the rule of one lesson every week even though the basics aren't very spectacular they are still the most important part.

you are trying a bit too hard to copy colors and values at this point, it is especially clear in the abdomen area where reference's navel is down a straight line while your navel is in a very curvy line. You made it look like the abdomen packs bulge out of the body towards the left side.

TLDR: work on structure, stop copying. What good is bridge decorated with diamonds if it's wiggling badly enough to fall apart
