I actually don't agree with that.

I think you should use whatever tools photoshop has to offer, as long as you know how they work and how to achieve the same effect without them. It's like saying you should only use the hard round. Sure, in the beginning it should be just about the only brush you use, but that's only because a beginner has no idea what the purpose of the other brushes are.

Don't omit the gesture from the figure. You lost a lot of the figure's movement (notable around the pelvis). You also need to observe the figure more carefully, as you've drawn the ribcage at a 3/4 view when it's mostly shown from the side.

If you haven't watched the proko gesture videos on youtube, I suggest you check those out.

The painting is good. Hence, why even through the anatomy is garbage is looks good.

I honestly don't think you have a good grasp of anatomy yourself. "Good" anatomy doesn't mean having perfectly proportioned figures. And no, I don't think the anatomy is very good, but I really don't think it's "garbage" either.

Also, what do you mean by "The painting is good"? Honestly, what is that supposed to tell us? That he has good brushstrokes? He has a good sense of form? Good lighting? What are you talking about?

Do the shadows in this picture make sense? The context is that she's standing under a bridge, and that she's viewing the shadows of people walking upon the bridge. I think it would because the sun's angle could make the shadows stretch, but I need to make sure.

as for rendering leaves, maybe look up some pictures and try to render them? I think it helps to think of them in layers, like there's the really dark ones you hardly see, then they gradually get lighter as they get more outward.

FINE. This is how you are doing in shapes.

The head is slightly too narrow compared to the reference. Not a big deal.

Mouth is higher than reference. That's sort of bad, especially if you're going for resemblance.

They eyebrows are in the wrong angle and they don't have the correct shapes.

All in all you're doing good because at least it's shaped like a fucking face and they eyes are in the correct place (very good!), but if you intend this as the portrait of the woman in the photo, you should redo it fixing those parts before you move on. Or you could just edit it on top of the photo though someone could say it's lazy and borderline cheating and a demon will come out of your arse and eat you alive. say you're painting a nose, you draw the structure of the nose and paint the volumes. you don't kinda vaguely fill in the place where the nose is going to be with local color then get down to carefully painting the details of the nostrils.

Uh. You should block in all the basic colors before you start rendering. Colors are relative to the colors that surround it. A grey surrounded by blue will look warm, whilst that same grey surrounded by orange will look cool. This is pretty basic stuff, friend.

There's no sense of form. Your shadows are ridiculously purple (that's not how you make the shadows "cool", bro). Values are bad (There's really only a single value for the light area and the shadow is really messy and confusing). Her right shoulder looks fucked to me, along with her hand. >but I could try to sneak one in.
NO. Thumbnails aren't something you try to sneak in - they are the backbone of all the planning that goes into any and every successful illustration. And you don't make 1, you make several, even 20 if you have to. You should have thumbnails to figure out the composition, gestures, value groups, and color groups. You'd then have find/create suitable references based off your thumbnails. Next comes sketches to refine your best thumbnail. Then comes the actual illustration.

If you're working digitally, you can always increase the size of the thumbnail to create your preliminary sketch, and in turn use that sketch to create your final drawing/painting.

Thumbnails seem like a time sink, but the reality is there are a time and headache saver. They allow you to solve all the logistical problems of the illustration before you waste time rendering/detailing a crappy iteration, then trying to save the crap simply because you already spent time on it.

Currently working on not drawing characters in one dimension, and making them seem more 3D and dynamic.

this character is just one I would design for the No more Heroes series

I gotta work on hands and I'm trying to learn that shading style with black for the hard shadows, I've just used darker versions of the color since now.

I realize the proportions are probably off. I spent so much time earlier in my drawings worrying about those too much. But if they're that bad go ahead and let me know

Then you didn't do it correctly. I don't see any of your original construction lines, but I'm gonna guess and tell you that there's more to construction than drawing a centerline and an eyeline. Draw the box that contains the head, then build up the head from there.

You're getting distracted by superficial details, like the hair and the individual features. You need to draw the whole head, not just the face and hair. Draw the cranium, then place the hair later. You also aren't drawing any of the features in perspective, nor are things aligned correctly in perspective. Again, the box in perspective should help with all of that. Pic related from teal.

I suggest you take the time to learn your perspective inside out, and how to draw all the basic forms from any angle in perspective. Next, learn how to build complex forms from basic forms. Then study the major forms and proportions of the head, as well as the major forms of the features of the face.

Keep in mind that there is no one 'correct' way to construct a head - as long as it's mindful of perspective, accurate forms, and accurate proportions, it will be fine. >Yeah I went for a far futuristic look, so I didn't use real guns as references. I am influenced by idealistic sci-fi and anime too. I'll try some more gritty designs next time to see how it goes.

The best believable sci-fi designs are based off modern real world equivalents. The artists that can create the best sci-fi designs have spent extensive time studying real designs.

Have a clear function for every part of the gun. Know what it does, and how it does what it does. Link related.

No no, I know you're going for the sci-fi look and I don't mean you need to draw real guns only, but instead look at how for example the weapon props in Star Wars were made from modified real firearms.

When people look at a fictional weapon, they will unconsciously compare it in the image they have in their mind of what a gun should look and if it doesn't look like that at all, it will look like a toy to them, not real. (even if realistically it's sensible to expect that future lazer weapons would look nothing like the guns we have now, people's minds just don't work like that)

Look at real guns and incorporate pieces of them in your fantasy weapons so there's something to trigger that "this is a gun" response in people's minds.

You mean copying? I don't know much about lights, highlights, cast shadows etc. Is there any books? There is a book in sticky, James Gurney - Color and light, but I don't know, is it any useful. Anyway, thank you.

>> No.1512409

It's very useful. But you can do the exercise I gave you because it's very simple. You're just shading a cube, meaning that you'll never see more than 3 sides of it. It's very easy. Studying light will help you more than any book, but take a look at Color and Light by Gurney anyways, as it's probably one of the best books you'll ever find on the subjects. Good luck!

Thats one of the stupidest things I've heard. Real gun designers know what they are doing so you should copy them.
Your thing looks like a water gun or something because it's full of pointless curves and sticks. Also the color scheme is stupid.
